About the property

A Brief Description of Thompson's Point

Thompson's Point is a unique area of summer camps some dating from the 19th century. It is a lovely, pristine wooded area that provides privacy and beautiful sites for the individual camps. The natural, wooded habitat encourages bird watching and the rustic, quiet dirt roads, that provide access to the camps, are ideal for walking, running and biking.

Camp Description

The camp has two large lakeside decks connected by a catwalk across the front of the camp. There are spectacular views of of the lake and the Adirondack Mountains from the camp, its decks and beachfront. The beach is a natural flat-rock cove with a 16 foot dock and a mooring for a large boat.

The camp was completely upgraded recently and has a modern, complete kitchen with dishwasher. The living area which includes the living room, dining area and kitchen is open and pleasantly furnished. There are two bedrooms on the entry level. Both have queen beds and one has views of the lake. There is a bath with shower on the entry level. The loft is large and has a double bed, a single bed and a smaller bed suitable for a child, plus a half bath. Washer and dryer are in a separate area.

The decks are furnished with dining tables and chairs, a weber gas grill (a charcoal grill is available) and furniture for relaxing and enjoying the views.

The kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms are completely furnished. There is a good gas heating system in case you have a nippy day and the camp is insulated.

Thompson's Point is about 15 miles from Burlington, 7 miles from Shelburne and 12 miles from Vergennes. The ferry to NY State is nearby in Charlotte to Essex,NY.

There is Wifi available plus cable TV and land phone.

Nice location, nice views, nice layout

  • 5 of 5

We spent a relaxing week here, walking on the dirt road, hiking nearby Mt Philo, canoeing and swimming in the lake, and enjoying the sunset from the deck and dining room.

Semi-rustic camp with everything you need in a Great Location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Camp for two weeks in July 2017. The camp is well stocked with everything you need, including all kitchen items and linens. The camp is rustic, as expected, but well taken care of and clean. Although "waterfront", the camp is high above the lake and the dock can't really be seen from the house (important if you have smaller kids). We did spend a lot of time on the dock launching rented Kayaks, swimming (bring floats/wear shoes) and easily catching plenty of small- and largemouth bass. The sunsets across the lake and over the Adirondacks are spectacular.

The two bedrooms on the first floor are small. Although they have full or queen beds, that doesn't leave much room for a suitcase or storage so pack light. Fortunately, there is a washer and dryer. The loft has more room and two beds + one smaller bed for a child. Depending on the direction of the wind, we found that the cabin can be warm if you have to close some of the many screen doors. A great ceiling fan helps with this in the main area but doesn't reach the bedrooms so be creative with fans. This was only a concern for one of our weeks and probably not too big a deal in Vermont.

The camp is in a wooded setting, which gives it a more private setting but takes away some of the sunlight. It has two nice decks that I can see getting a lot of use out if in the fall but summer requires strategic use of citronella candles and mosquito coils. The one on the right (looking at the lake) has great views of the lake and sunsets. The one on the left has a gas grill (that we used extensively!) and leads to stairs down to the lake.

The location is great - the dock is in a cove but close enough to the Big Lake to see the mountains. Shelburne/Vergennes/Middlebury/Burlington are not far. The Essex ferry makes getting to NY convenient. The Champlain Bike Trail is nearby. Good hiking is less than 30-45 minutes away.

The owners are quick to respond and very helpful. We had an a problem with the all-house water filter (lake water) that was promptly fixed.

We would come here again.

Lovely Camp

  • 5 of 5

Our whole experience on the lake achieved our expectations of a wonderful summer vacation. The camp is modern, but still provides a rustic feeling.

Not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

We stayed in the cute little camp for its waterfront location and access to Burlington. Burlington was great. The lake is stunning with the Mt backdrop. Our dissapointment however was the proximity of the camp to the water. You do have a glimpse of a panaramic view but the unit is set back and up from the water quit a bit. The descent down the stairs is long and the stone "beach" not easily used with large logs and debri cluttering it. There is also a wooded area between the decks and the water which obstructs the view from the decks. This is to some extent shown in the images so perhaps we did not observe them close enough and just thought the unit offered more than it did.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry this renter was disappointed. I am sorry that she didn't understand the North Shore Road topography. All the camps are either above the lake and walk down, or walk down to the camp. Generally the view from above othe lake is very nice. The best view is from the deck on the North side of my camp as it is quite wide and you can watch sailboats and water skiers from there. There are views from inside; the kitchen and dining area Windows. In the rules, which are on line ,renters are told they cannot see the actual beach from the camp and under no circumstances should small children be allowed there alone. They need adult supervision. We have had a very unusual amount of rain this spring, causing the lake level to rise and bringing the logs in. The beach is very shallow due to the lake depth after the rains. There is usually flat rock exposed, which can be used for chairs. I'm waiting for the local arborist to come and remove them. My property was not the only property to experience problems and I am in line. Hopefully he will be there today. I have rented several years for limited weeks and much more recently the entire season. I have never had a customer complain about the steps before. They are wide with a rails and a mini deck with chairs on the way down. I'm sure there is a picture showing t the last I stairs and some of the longer stairs in the ad. I take as a good suggestion to mention the stairs more explicitly in the future ads. I also will have more pictures taken of the stairs. I have gone up and down the hill so many times, I probably don't appreciate how difficult they can be for others. Point taken. I do really want happy customers.

Excellent vacation cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in what the locals must call a summer camp. Those of us from the Midwest and maybe other places would call it a summer cottage on the lake. Regardless of the terminology, the cottage is very well equipped, very clean and well cared for and has a great view of the lake from the deck that surrounds the cottage. Marilyn is a terrific owner, her communication of all details related to our visit was excellent, I would highly recommend this property for a relaxing stay in the Lake Champlain area.

What a wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cabin on Lake Champlain. Wonderful open plan but with private bedrooms. Great kitchen for cooking a good meal. Decks all around for watching sunset over the lake and hearing the loons call. The cabin is in a beautiful secluded area with lots of walks within short driving distance and back roads for exploring. Don't forget to check out the amazing Shelburne Museum about 10 miles away.

One thing that I really loved was the sense of history the place has. It's thoroughly modernized, but you can tell the house has been loved and appreciated by the people who have owned it.

Hiking, boating and walking country roads are enjoyed by many campers. The Shelburne Museum is a favorite place to visit. It has many beautiful Early American buildings and collections. There is a ferry used into the fifties is on the museum side. Children especially like this exhibit. The ski areas have chair and gondola rides I during the summer. They are about half an hour distance. A great way to look out over the mountains to New York and New Hampshire. Locally there is state park Mt. Philo. You can drive to the top for a small fee, or park at the bottom and hike up. Has marvelous views .

Great place for a picnic.

Bird watching is a favorite pastime for both locals and visitors.
