Rusted Star Ranch was started by long-time Colorado residents Janet & Pete. With the intention of establishing a community connection to both Allenspark and Lyons, Colorado, they have brought together their passions for design, architecture, horses, locally-grown food, craft beer and environmental sustainability. Rusted Star also hosts beautiful weddings, private events, and bohemian getaways throughout the summer season. You will usually see Pete & Janet with horses, pulling invasive weeds, throwing a stick for their dog Vigo, or cooking on their wood-fired BBQ.

Inspiration abounds; and the opportunity to explore is endless. It’s up to us to find it. Rusted Star is a place for you to feel at home and seek something new. Here you can soak up a certain kind of quite solitude the Colorado high-country offers.
If you’ve been daydreaming about the mountains and feeling a pull inside yourself to travel some where just to see what’s there… or if you’ve been longing for a trip that gives you a true chance to escape and see something new and exhilarating, then Rusted Star Ranch is for you.
If you’ve found our listing and love our Rocky Mountain location or modern rustic/bohemian vibe but expect the full service amenities of a hotel, ski resort condo or pricey dude ranch, this place is not for you.
Rusted Star can be your home base for microadventures with local discoveries of all sorts and sizes; it’s a place that can rekindle the spirit of adventure for a day or 2 or 3 depending upon what you’re up for; or it can be your Base Camp to hike, climb or mountaineer the world-famous Longs Peak.
Rusted Star is also a place to rock in the hammock, soak up the sunshine, and listen to the hawks and hummingbirds.
If you like scenic drives and amazing vistas, take a drive to Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road, which will take you from Estes Park to Grand Lake. Covering the 48 miles between Estes Park on the park's east side and Grand Lake on the west, Trail Ridge Road more than lives up to its reputation. Eleven miles of this highway traverses above tree-line, the elevation near 11,500 feet where the RMNP's evergreen forests come to a halt. As it winds up and across the tundra's vastness to its high point at 12,183 feet elevation, Trail Ridge Road (U.S. 34) offers visitors thrilling views, wildlife sightings and spectacular alpine wildflower exhibitions, all from the comfort of their car.
Whether you walk or drive, you’ll find pockets of amazing beauty nearby.
> Head to Lyons, Colorado, the center of the bluegrass universe as generations of legends and future-legends and Festivarians converge under the red rock cliffs of the St. Vrain River.
> Hike up to the pass between Meadow Mountain and St Vrain Mountain just for the grand view into the southern most end of Rocky Mountain National Park; if you can’t make it all the way to the pass, the walk up the trail is truly beautiful with great views, wildflowers, and wildlife – well worth a walk in the woods.
> Eat breakfast or lunch at our local favorite, Meadow Mountain Café. If you’re in a rush and forget that good local people are making you really good food… don’t count on much attention or service. No worries; it’s just a local tradition ;)
> Visit The Old Gallery in Allenspark. Local art, crafts, play ground for the kids, open mike, summer musicals, local potlucks or our favorites - the annual Hog-a-palooza… and Run Like the Wind.
> Take a trail ride out of the Allenspark Livery; a short ride into the Roosevelt National Forest or longer rides to Ouzel Falls or up the Ouzel Lake inside the southern end of Rocky Mountain National Park.
> Drive to the Chapel on the Rock at the Saint Malo Retreat Center at the base of Mt. Meeker. The location, view, stonework, and/or a conversation with its local caretaker, Johnnie Davis is worth the short drive from Rusted Star.
> Have an IPA, shoot pool, or watch the Tour De France in the bar at Aspen Lodge with an awesome view of Long’s peak from its deck. It survived a massive landslide from a 500-year flood event in 2013, and the local owner would be grateful for your business.
> Drive to the Lily Lake Visitor Center; walk around Lily Lake, hike up Lily Mountain (9,786 ft) or hike up to the summits of Twin Sisters Peak (9,090 ft.) is often a warm-up hike, or to acclimate for other hikes in the park, such as the Keyhole on Longs Peak or Hallet Peak.
Rusted Star Ranch was fantastic! The property and views were gorgeous; the pictures here give a very accurate snapshot, and they are even more breathtaking in person. I was also extremely pleased with the quality and cleanliness of the cabin itself. The fixtures were new, everything was spotless, and it contained just about everything we needed. Towels and sheets were in very good condition, all utensils and amenities were available, and the owners even had a gift basket of food for us. We had a great time exploring around the property, enjoying views of Mt. Meeker, and we ate nearly every meal on the patio. The cabin was an easy drive to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. I would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a mountain getaway with access to the national park.
Janet and Pete,
Thank you so much for allowing us to spend a few days in your home in Allenspark before heading to Breckenridge for our son's wedding! We loved the location and everything about your lovely home. We were able to explore the property and view a spectacular sunset from your perfect spot on the mountain top. Additionally, we thoroughly enjoyed the convenience of hiking numerous trails nearby to Lookout Mountain, Twin Peaks and Finch Lake...with views worth every step! Coming home to your humble abode, surrounded by the scenery and many, many happy hummingbirds! We enjoyed cooking dinners on your outdoor grill and building evening fires in the nice fire pit next to the grill!
We enjoyed a trip into Estes Park and Lyons for nice afternoon lunches and once again enjoying the views along the way! Heading out one morning we spotted a juvenile brown/black bear exploring along the lower driveway only to be startled by our vehicle and running like the wind into the nearby woods. What a treat before our "main event" in Breckenridge!

Our stay at the Rustic Star Ranch was perfect. We found ourselves so obsessed with the design of the cabin that it was all we talked about for the first hour or two of our stay. The setting of the cabin is perfect for day hikes into the National Forest. The view from the lofted bedroom was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed cooking all of our meals, indoors and outdoors. Janet and Pete were very welcoming! We hope to come back again!
My husband and I visited the Rusted Star Ranch for our anniversary in October. At first we were a little apprehensive, we had never rented from owners before and did not know what to expect. I have to say that our minds were at ease from the first moment we drove up and met Janet. The cabin is Amazing, I wanted to pick it up and take it back home with us. We had everything that we needed with in reach and were met at with a basket full of goodies and breakfast items. The décor was like something from a magazine, we found out that most of the work was done by Pete and Janet! The first night we hiked up to the pond and took in the wonderful scenery and sat at the small outlook and enjoyed Longs Peak. At night we slept with the windows open and could hear the elk bugling. We had a wonderful time and a great trip and will be back!
Thank you Janet and Pete for everything!
First off, Janet and Pete are so sweet. One of the nicest couple we've ever met! Now for the cabin review; my husband and I could not have been happier or more comfortable any where else. The cabin is nestled quietly on a hill top and offers all the views those pictures show on this site and more. It was literally breath taking outdoors. Inside the cabin the decor was unique but in a great way ;) Steel, wood, warm colors and a welcoming feel. It was just so nice. The owners supplied a little breakfast package which certainly helped after arriving late in the evening! The location of the cabin in regards to Rocky Mountain park was convenient as it was to ATV trails, horse riding and basic sight seeing. We would definitely stay there again! ! I honestly cannot say enough great things about this cabin stay, loved it.
The owners, Pete and Janet were great, as they want to make sure you have everything you need, to enjoy your stay in this beautiful area. The kitchen had all the essentials to make any meal you would like. It's difficult to find anything closer to Rocky Mountain National Park, that this place. The view! Can't forget the view. All in all, you cannot go wrong with this rental, trust me.
