Overview

About the property

Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Duddon Valley, Riverside Cottage ticks every box - a rolling river nearby, majestic fells/mountains to all sides, a most traditional Cumbrian Cottage, with a fabulous log burner, many original features, and yet lovingly restored to a bespoke standard.

There's a local pub in walking distance. There's plenty of walks nearby, from gentle strolls to quite high intensity fell climbing. There are also many cycle routes and the area is a favourite with both cyclists and mountain bikers. There is a store room at the cottage for outdoors wear, boots and bikes. You’ll love Riverside for the ambiance, the outdoors space, the peace and tranquility of being close to nature, the space and time to relax. It's good for couples, singles, families, and also furry friends (pets).

The ground floor consists of a cosy lounge with a large ornate woodburner and original slate floor. The dining area has a contrasting wooden floor and leads through to the modern kitchen with stylish and understated decor. Every convenience for your comfort is provided here. The cottage has its own water bore hole and its own water treatment plant and is therefore very eco-friendly. All the appropriate eco friendly products which you will need in the kitchen are provided for you.

The stairs and upper floor has plush thick carpeting. Half way up the stairs you will find a small landing, and a window with a great view leading to the family size bathroom - a beautiful white bathroom suite with free standing pedestal bath. Further up the stairs leads you to the shower room and the two bedromms. Choose for a luxurious king size bed or alternatively there is a twin bedded room with large single beds. These beds can also be fitted together if you would prefer a superking size bedroom.

The river rolling by can be heard from the kitchen and the bathroom, and of course the garden. Take a seat on the garden bench with a good book or a cup of tea and take time to sit and stare - there really is a fabulous panorama of natural beauty all around you. We think one visit won't be enough!

Would not recommend if the fuel oil smell was not repaired.

  • 1 of 5

Property smelled of Fuel Oil as soon as We walked in. It came from the hot water heater/boiler and was very unpleasant smell, I think there was a leak some where in the fuel oil unit. This effected my wife Asthma causing quite a reaction and she had to use her nebulizer to fend of an asthma attack thru out the stay. The toilet paper was quite low/ ran out and no laundry soap. Also would be a lot easier to find the place if you used Ulpha as the post code/destination We punched in Seathwaite on our sat/nav and ended up at Seathwaite Farm: South of Keswick a long 2 hour drive back around the mountains to reach the cottage north of Ulpha. Also had a nail sticking up from a loose floor board and scraped a foot on it.

The make over of the cottage was very well done and tastefully decorated. All in all beautiful countyside and a brisk walk brought you the Pub in Seathwaite for a fine lunch or evening meal. All in All its only a vacation and can' expect it to be a perfect all the time. I would recommend if the smell was addressed.

Owner's Response: These guests came for a 4 night stay in Riverside Cottage, and they left a very nice message in the guest book advising me they had had a lovely time. Imagine my surprise on reading their review. There was no mention at all during their stay about the smell of fuel oil, about asthma being adversely affected, or indeed anything untoward whatsoever. I have eight holiday cottages, and should these guests have found Riverside not to their liking, or indeed, felt the cottage to be detrimental in any way to their health, they could have been resettled very easily, and at my expense. What I am trying to say dear reader, is that none of these problems appeared to exist until just now, when these guests would rather tell the HomeAway community and the world of their concerns, but never thought to mention any at all while here. I should mention that there is no issue with my heating system whatsoever, despite the guests attempt to diagnose one, and it is wholly compliant, covered by a safety certificate and complies with all safety regulations. I work hard to give all my lovely guests the best holidays I can, and there is nothing myself and my team will not address immediately should any issue arise that we are made aware of. All the other five star reviews here will testify to you of that. So dear reader, take this one with a large pinch of salt, as I feel it is very mischevious reviewing, and conveys rather more about the guests character than it does about Riverside Cottage.

Beautifully done

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was wonderful. . ..from the fire that you just had to strike a match to start as we entered on a lovely, drizzly afternoon to the cozy and upscale linens. We enjoyed ourselves immensely.

Amazing place

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely time in this beautiful little cottage. Everything you could possibly need was available for use there and it was in a wonderful location.

Be aware that there are no shops in close walking distance, and the nearest one (post office) was closed every time we went (possibly owners on holiday. If you go prepared for this, it's no problem though.

We were so pleased with this little find. Great pubs - only one walking distance, but great for food. Other pubs a short drive away are also fantastic.

Thanks Amanda for a lovely stay :)

Perfect. Don't hesitate. Book if you can

  • 5 of 5

If you want a quieter part of The Lakes this is the place for you.

The house has fab views. Is warm and cosy and beautifully furnished.

We chose it because it has 2 beds, 2 bathrooms and would accept 2 dogs.

We drove to the big beach at Silecroft with cafe. Then walked from the door.

A relaxing holiday for all.

Cumbrian delight!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a taste of the rural appeal of the Lake District, look no further. This lovely cottage is perfectly situated to explore the natural beauty of the area with outstanding views and walks on your doorstep. The cottage itself is a blend of rustic charm with modern convenience, very well equipped and tastefully decorated. A tip for travellers in the depths of winter: the central heating is fine but you do need the log burner as a back up in the lounge area and it really helps if you can source dry, seasoned logs! Amanda is extremely helpful and the local hostelries offer a very friendly welcome. Delightful!
