About the property

4 en-suite bedrooms in peaceful valley with private pool

Stunning 14th Century Water Mill set in a peaceful wooded valley, all amenities (including Michelin star restaurants) within a 30 minute drive. The beautifully restored holiday complex consists of a four bedroom gite with private 10m*5m salt pool and a seperate to rent luxury one bedroom apartment.

This peaceful retreat, set in five hectares of garden, meadow and woods, is a nature lovers' paradise, a magical open valley with the Viaur meandering by.

The river flow is shallow and cool, creating islands and streamlets, where deer rest and other wild animals forage or search for trout and crayfish. All the surrounding trees make it a colourful birdlovers' paradise, the flash of kingfisher blue, with woodpeckers and dippers providing the red, and the occasional golden oriole.

High above are buzzards and kites (sometimes even the small-toed variety) soaring on the thermals. At river level the heron and egrets nest. Dragonflies and butterflies abound.

Riverside walks, or the woodland paths for the more adventurous, show a year-round profusion of wildflowers, seasonal mushrooms and other delicacies.

The tastefully restored gite sleeps eight in four ensuite bedrooms, three doubles and one twin. All have very comfortable mattresses, cotton bedding and towels provided, with a mixture of antique and newer furniture creating old French charm.

The large lounge with leather upholstery has a wood burner for those chilly spring and autumn evenings, and all rooms also have electric radiators and cooling fans for the summer nights. Well equipped modern kitchen, TV, DVD, books and games complete the picture. There is also an apartment in the old mill which sleeps two adults and one small child.

The gite is a converted barn. On the ground floor is a large single room with well equipped kitchen, dining space and lounge with wood burning stove and all normal facilities. First floor has one double bedroom ensuite, and one twin bedroom with bathroom. Sitting area between these two bedroom with books and games.

On the upper floor are two further double bedrooms, each ensuite. Total area of the gite is about 150 square metres.

The double doors to the kitchen lead out to the patio areas, barbeque and herb garden. Small bridge across the millrace leading to additional seating area. The large swimming pool is close at hand.

The one bedroom apartment is part of the old water mill, converted to a high standard. A small additional room can be used for a child's bed if required. this cn be rented upon request. For more details see wwwayresmill.com

Why Barbara gaunt chose Centrès

Aveyron is generally regarded as the best kept secret of France; we looked at many properties throughout SW France but found the mill and its valley a very magical spot, a wonderful and calming place in which to establish our Gite complex, the property has such a wonderful peaceful atmosphere, whilst still retaining its sense of adventure.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This place was ideal for our French, English, Australian and Tahitian reunion. What a beautiful place and such an attentive host. We had everything we needed and more. The homemade preserves and cake was a huge hit, as well as equipment for crayfishing in the river. We visited Cordes sur Ceil was very special.

The only problem was the weather, not something that can be helped.

The peace and quietand the walks through the forest were great ways to relax after a hectic day.

Much thanks and love to Barbara for her warm hospitality.

Simply Perfect - Peaceful, Picturesque and Calm…

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Aveyron with our friends and two young children and have returned home feeling restored, re-energised and completely rested. This property has everything you need for a relaxing break. Set in a spectacular valley, surrounded by a canopy of stunning trees and running river water, you immediately experience the tranquillity and peace that this beautiful 14th Century Mill House provides. The accommodation is a beautifully converted barn, equipped with every ‘creature comfort’ you require. From the moment we stepped into the property, we felt at home. Barbara the owner and host takes such pride in ensuring that her guests have the perfect stay and her generosity and attention to detail made our time at the Aveyron extra special. On arrival, she greeted us with such warmth and kindness ensuring that we had everything we needed. Barbara provided us with freshly bought provisions, containing all the basics we needed such as milk, bread, butter tea etc. She also added lots of treats both for the adults and children (wine, cheese, coffee pods, homemade chutneys and a freshly home baked Lemon Drizzle cake which was delicious). The property is well equipped throughout and the added extras such as high-quality soap, shampoo, hairdryers etc. all contribute to the luxurious experience. The outdoor area is simply idyllic and once again Barbara provides everything you need from pool towels to inflatables, bats, balls, fishing nets. etc for the children. You can choose to relax by the wonderful pool area, which is very well maintained and surrounded by a beautiful grass lawn or wander by the flowing, freshwater river and enjoy everything that nature has to offer. We loved our time strolling by the river, wading in and fishing for cray fish but equally had lots of fun by the pool, soaking up the sun and playing games and swing ball in the generous outdoor space. There is lots to enjoy around the area exploring the surrounding towns. We loved Albi and the Cathedral is certainly worth a visit. Whilst staying at the Mill, I had both a reflexology and Reiki treatment. Barbara is an expert practitioner and I would highly recommend her therapy sessions. I found both therapies thoroughly soothing and would be a regular visitor if Barbara practised in London. Barbara’s generosity and kindness is what makes this place stand out from the rest. Aveyron Mill is a very special place and our time spent there has left us with some wonderful memories.

5***** Gite Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

A big thank you to Barbara the owner of this wonderful family holiday retreat. The area is lovely, tucked away in it's own private little valley with a river running through it.

Your own private swimming pool and very generous accommodation for our family. It was a very special treat with lots of hidden little extras from the owner that made our stay feel special.

The children were so happy exploring and wading in the river and finding treasures. There was lots to do on the site with walking by the river and in the forests. Some quaint little french towns to explore which made you feel as though time had stood still. We loved the history and wonderful food places to sample, and of course the French wine and patisserie's were fresh and a welcome change to sample.

With wonderful fresh unpackaged food from area we really had a wonderful exploration for all the family.

It really is a safe family holiday accommodation with all up to date appliances, new kitchen and bathrooms to each bedroom and lots of really fresh natural spring water,

The sitting room was generous, with an open fire to curl up in front of and read a book. The outside area was most pleasant with a world all of its own…...we will be back!

What a beautiful idyllic place

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my family and two young children and what an idyllic place to stay.

The pool is great and when you've had enough of splashing and sun lounging there's great fun to be had in the river. Outside the property the river is only knee deep in most places and we had great fun fishing and searching for cray fish.

There's plenty of beautiful surrounding walks straight from the property's doorstep.

The owner, Barbara, could not do more to accommodate our needs and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the surrounding area and attractions.

I would definitely recommend this property and we will be back again next summer.

Très agréable

  • 5 of 5

Fabuleux !

  • 5 of 5

On the edge of the Cathar and Templar regions, the Aveyron area is steeped in history. Even though it has an area almost half that of Wales, almost all of the department can be reached from the mill within an hour. Bastide towns, cathedral cities, castles, art galleries, museums aplenty. The childhood home of Toulouse Lautrec can be visited 15 minutes away, and just 45 minutes away in the neighbouring department of Tarn the famous cathedral and the Toulouse Lautrec museum make the Unesco heritage town of Albi a must. A little further is the Gaillac wine region. All sporting facilities, water based and land based, are locally available, even the occasional theme park. For the lovers of modern engineering, the stunning Millau bridge is an hour away and the delightful railway bridge over the Viaur twenty minutes. In high season each village has its fete and there are numerous night markets and open air theatre and music spectacles.
