Comfortable, convenient and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We felt most at home here, and enjoyed a comfortable week in this house. The location is ideal with an excellent view, a freshwater loch and the sea, and feels remote but with the convenience of a shop and somewhere to eat just down the road. We saw Golden and Sea Eagles and also a Merlin. The otters avoided our efforts at discovery despite our best efforts. Visited several beaches which were all truly wonderful, especially the expanse of Luskentyre.

Not quite up to the standard expected.

  • 2 of 5

Our overall impression for the cottage was one of disappointment. Although the cottage is as described and the images accurately reflect the accommodation on offer what is not apparent, until some time is spent there, is it suffers from terrible damp issues and as a consequence has a most unpleasant odour. Granted you get used to this but it is annoying that this issue has not been rectified by the owner. The number of de-humidifiers located in virtually every room tell it's own story. The only way to combat the problem is to have the windows open and the heating on - far from ideal. By the end of our stay most of our clothing was damp and required washing upon our return home. The property is also very dated inside and not what you should expect within this price bracket. The location is fine and is handily placed for access to the beautiful beach at Scarista. The communication with the owner, prior to our visit, was prompt, helpful and appreciated. Until some investment is made in the property I cannot recommend staying here.

It is as described on the website

Property was well looked after. Probably a bit too remote for us as our first week was in Stornoway so with a teenager with us there wasn’t a lot to do. We expected this however were let down with the weather. Harris is a beautiful place when the sun is shining.

Owner's Response: Quite right, there's not a lot in the way of night life in the Outer Hebrides.

Well proportioned and well layed out house. No sense of living on top of each other.

A lovely property in a superb location. We all have fond memories of watching Red throated divers on the loch and watching a Golden Eagle being harrassed by a Raven. The property is an ideal base for anyone taking advantage of the superb landscapes; archaeology; flora and fauna of the Island. Any fishermen would love the easy access to the adjoining loch. A further feature of our holiday was the warm and friendly nature of the Harris residents.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your kind review, Bill. Pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and saw much of what the island has on offer. Yes, the locals are gentle, helpful folk, unfailingly honest, trustworthy and respectable, unlike those fearsome ravens.

Peaceful

Beautifully well equipped cottage. Wanted for nothing. Local shop relatively close. Friendly locals and unspoilt naturally beautiful location. Waking up to loch side views was superb. Harris is stunning and this cottage is close to some of the most stunning beaches I've seen anywhere.

If you like highland Scotland, you will find all its variety within a small area, from the sea lochs, inlets, coves, bays, cliffs and headlands on the East, through heath, moorland and freshwater lochs inland, very dramatic mountain scenery in the North and superb beaches and sea like the Aegean in the West.

Wherever you are standing, you can see for miles.

Birds - golden eagle, sea eagle, buzzard, peregrine falcon, gannet, raven etc.

Sea - pilot whale, orca, dolphin, porpoise, seal, otter etc.

Ferry - Leverburgh to Berneray and thence to the Uists, Barra etc. Boat trips - to St Kilda, Taransay, small islands.

Good game fishing.

Kindly and pleasant people - houses don't have letter boxes as no one locks their door.

Peace and quiet....I could go on.....
