There are direct connections with Trapani and Palermo, Favignana, Erice and Selinunte. Mazara is overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, at the mouth of the river Màzaro. Its neighborhoods are organized according to the layout of the medina, the typical Arabic urban plan. Its narrow lanes and churches from the Norman period make Mazara a unique city with a history of its own. During the greek-selinuntino period the city acquired all its splendor; it became an organized urban center, the most thriving empori of Selinunte, with its own currency. Destroyed Selinunte, in 409 a. C., Mazara was dominated now by the Syracusans, now by the Carthaginians. Testimonies of the Roman conquest are found in the sarcophagi, in the urns, in the tombstones, in the mosaics, and in the numerous villas found in the area. It is in this period that Christianity lands in Mazara, contributing to the birth of the cult of San Vito, patron of the city. In August the most early Italian procession takes place in honor of the saint.
