Shabby chic manor house in Modica, organic garden, 10 mins from the beach, relax
The villa is an historic house built in 1700 on preexisting Byzantine ruins now part of the farmhouse. It is surrounded by a botanic garden (2500 sqm). There are lemon trees, oranges, palms, figs, prickly pears, nuts, aloe hibiscus, pine and palm tree.
Antica Dimora San Filippo is surrounded by olive trees. On site we produce extra virgin olive oil, as well as ricotta cheese. They are available to guests together with the organic garden with salads and vegetables. We do also have a wine cellar with Sicilian wines Doc.
The property is divided into apartments of different sizes, from "Le Palme" for 10 people with direct access to the pool and the park, the "Gran Noce" for 6 people, cozy and rustic-chic, the Gelso Nero 3 for 4 / 5 people to conclude with the Gelso Nero 1 and 2 for 2/3 people each.
In each apartment you will enjoy total privacy, porches for exclusive use and parking. Internet access free and unlimited.
In the upper part of the garden a secluded pool with a big solarium equipped with deckchairs and showers.
Come to Antica Dimora San Filippo to live full days, enjoying the church library or relaxing in the garden or visiting the Baroque of Val di Noto (Modica, Scicli, Ibla, Noto, Palazzolo, Etna).

A unique, special place.
This is a unique and charming home with a VERY rustic flavor. The host, Diego has a wonderful spirit and was fairly east to communicate with although his English is better than our Italian - he is not fluent. This was not a problem for us except in the desire to learn more about the property and its history.
We stayed in the largest apartment on the property and there were no other guests during our visit. It felt very private. The residence is spacious and well stocked, however, this is not a hotel. It's truly a 300-year-old brick and marble palace with furnishings and paintings that in some instance are as old as the place itself. The beds and sheets were comfortable and modern...so no worries there! The bathrooms did leave something to be desired - but they were functional and suited us fine.
The kitchen had all that we needed and we cooked every night. A Conad (grocery store) is about 5 minutes by car and easily has everything you could ask for. The kitchen has a dishwasher as well as a fridge, pantry and all the plates and silverware you could need.
There are many balconies and terraces to spend time on, however, the best was the roof terrace overlooking the farm fields below. The view is spectacular...but there are two industrial farming facilities on the landscape - so it's not totally pristine. We also suggest bringing mosquito repellant if you plan to be outside at dusk. We bought some (at conad!) and it the problem was resolved!
The beach is 10 miles away and has a perfect setup. For $9 euro you can rent two lounge chairs and an umbrella and spend the day by the sea... It was perfect and easy. There is a bar there too for drinks and snacks.
The pool at this villa is pretty perfect. Private and set away from the house. It was clean and comfortable but we spent only the late afternoons there.
Modica, Noto, and Ragusa are all within 30 minutes or less drive. (Modica is about 15 minutes) ALL are spectacular to see but they did get very quiet during the afternoon siesta so plan trips for the mornings and spend the afternoons at the beach or by the pool.
As other reviewers have mentioned - Diego treated us to a breakfast of fresh ricotta that was very simple, delicious and easily in the top 5 things we tasted on our trip to Sicily. Be nice and he'll probably offer it to you too!!!
If you are open to old, worn, unique and historically rich places - this is certainly one to check out!
Exquisite Sicilian experience
We very much enjoyed our stay. Diego was extremely attentive to our needs. He and his assistent even provided us a sumptious Sicilian breakfast the morning after our arrival. The villa is old and rustic in atmosphere, with gardens, rooftop views of the sea, and a pool. The living quarters are well equiped and spacious. The villa is well situated near to Noto, Modica, Ragusa and Scicli. Our 5 day stay provided us the experience of a Sicilian villa that we hoped for. Would highly recommend it for family groups of 6 to 10.
If you want Four Seasons perfection, this is not for you. If you would like to live in a 300 year old manor and can overlook a few rough edges, you will love staying here. Diego, the owner, has had the property in his family for 150 years and is doing his best to restore it. Due to a late flight and a delay we arrived close to midnight but Diego was there to greet us - and to upgrade us to a larger suite.
The next morning we had a complimentary Sicilian breakfast made by Donatella with delicious pancakes and lots of other things to eat.
Vegetarians should try the Singola restaurant in Modica and for gourmet Sicilian food try Locanda del Colonnello, also in Modica.
Wonderful hosts at a fascinating property
Our family of 4 (2 young girls) had a wonderful week here in August, staying in Gelso Nero 3. Diego and his wife were wonderfully relaxed hosts - very welcoming when we arrived late at night, with a freshly made ricotta salad waiting for us in the fridge, but not at all intrusive, leaving us to explore and enjoy the amazing property and gardens (and popping up every so often with freshly made granite or delicious local specialities). Although there must have been quite a few people staying in the different holiday rentals it did not seem busy and there were only ever a couple of other people by the pool.
The accommodation is simple but has everything you need.
We had breakfast in the breakfast room on our first morning and would thoroughly recommend it - a whole orange cake fresh from the oven just for us! We only wish our Italian was better so that we could have found out more about the property and been able to thank Diego properly for his hospitality.
The location is great (although you definitely need a car), with easy access to the beaches and towns of the area.
Recommended - Le Palme at Case San Filippo
We’ve just got back from a two week self catering holiday staying in Le Palme at Case San Filippo. The apartment is a tasteful blend of an old stone villa with a 1930’s style Art Deco extension and is very spacious. There’s a mix of high vaulted ceilings, circular windows and a huge rectangular 1930’s dining room that offers a sense of space and freedom! As a plus there is also a dishwasher and washing machine.
Diego, the owner was very friendly and available when needed on our holiday but was not intrusive. He was very accommodating when we explained that we would be very late arriving as our plane had been diverted. We flew into Catania airport and hired a car but the airport at Comiso is a similar travel time of 1.5 hours way. The Apartment is very near Modica which we visited frequently for shopping and eating out. We also visited Scici, Cava D’Ispica, Ragusa, Noto, Caltagirone, Piazza Armerina (for the Roman Mosaics at Casale) as well as Agrigento and Mount Etna which were both possible to do in a day, albeit with an early start.
The pool at Case San Filippo is shared by all the apartments but was never busy. It seemed to be just the right size (to warm up sufficiently), and was maintained daily and kept very clean.
We can definitely recommend Case San Filippo for holidays in Sicily - check out their website. It is well positioned for day trips by car but also offers an excellent pool and loads of space.
Lovely Old Scillian Mansion
Old house, full of character, furnished with simple traditional furniture and with beautiful grounds. The owner was very friendly and helpful when we arrived but there a very relaxed atmosphere so we all felt at home. The complex has a number of interesting converted outbuildings and apartments and the pool is shared on a very friendly basis. We would love to go back there again!
