About the property

3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, 2 reception rooms, and dining kitchen over 3 floors.

Cade's House is around 150 years old and arranged over 3 floors. Ideal to walk into Durham City or exploring wider in the north east - Sunderland and Newcastle, indoor shopping at the Metro Centre, Beamish Museum, various golf courses, Durham Cricket Club at Chester le Street, Kynren at Auckland Castle, Angel of the North, and the Northumberland coast if you venture further afield.

Still some original features but fibre WiFi is one of the new features.

Named after the Roman road that crossed the river near here, Cade's House is deceptively large and newly decorated. We have 2 cosy lounges downstairs if you want to split up and watch TV in one, and read with the radio in the other. Alternatively, you can open the double doors between the rooms and enjoy one big space. To supplement the central heating, both rooms have large Victorian fireplaces with open gas fires to sit around when it's cold outside. The second lounge is quiet and opens to the spacious, well equipped kitchen so you can all be together if preparing a meal, or just a cup of tea (we will leave everything you need for a cuppa when you arrive). As well as the kitchen we have a utility room with a butler sink, washing machine, tumble dryer, and ironing equipment for you.

3 lovely double bedrooms with solid oak furniture, including an airy loft style room with exposed beams.

The rear is not overlooked, south facing, and a suntrap in summer. We have left chairs and a table in the garage if you want to sit out on the patio area, and enjoy a glass of wine (this area is well lit if you want to use it after the sun has gone down).

We will always try to meet you at check in and walk you around the house. If you wish, we can point out local takeaways and shops plus the little cafe around the corner if that's what you need. There is also a drawer in the hall containing leaflets for local tourist attractions.

As well as having access to the whole house there is also a private sitting area in the south facing rear, and a table and chairs are provided (just get them out of the secure garage whenever the sun shines). There is room for up to 3 cars, safely off the road, in front of the garage at the rear. There are motion sensor lights to help you if it is dark when you park.

Ask for additional keys in advance if you need them for your group.

We are not far away if there is a problem or just phone if you need some advice. There are business cards with a phone number next to the guest book (please leave any comments or recommendations to help future guests) on the hall table.

Why Jill Massey chose Durham

Gilesgate is one of the oldest areas of Durham, and is part of the historical conservation area. St Gile's Church is believed to be the oldest church after the cathedral. Not only is Durham only a 15 minute walk with a selection of attractions, restaurants and bars. Cade's House is named after Cade's Road which was the Roman road that crossed the river nearby.

Close to the house there is a Sainsbury's local, Esso petrol station, hairdressers, bakery, cafe, and food outlets. A personal recommendation is the Lebanese takeaway about 200m walk if you fancy a night in. There is a retail park including a Tesco Extra open 24 hours.

Listed as a World Heritage Site, Durham cathedral, castle and cobbled streets are a must to visit with medieval architecture, the Oriental Museum, Botanic Gardens, Gala Theatre, and traditional indoor market (established 1851), there is something for everyone! The very popular outdoor Living Museum of Beamish (former European Museum of the Year) is only a 15-minute drive away, and a great value (your ticket will last a whole year if you come back to visit the north east again) family day out for all the family. The Riverside, a top class county cricket ground hosting international test matches, and home of Durham County Cricket Club, is only a 10-minute drive away, and The Ramside Hotel, spa, and golf club boasting two 18-hole championship golf courses, is only a 5 minute drive away. Venturing further afield, guests can enjoy day trips to the magnificent Yorkshire Dales and Scottish Borders

2 night break

Had a lovely warm welcome from the owner Jill who was there when we arrived - tea ready and cookies in the oven. Cades House was very comfortable with everything we could want - much more spacious inside than you might expect. Spent a couple days exploring Durham and found it to be a beautiful and interesting city. Would definitely recommend both Cades House and Durham for a short city break. In particular, Cades House is ideally situated for the town as you can walk there in 15 minutes along the river or catch one of the many buses which go past the door.

Good Location, Clean, Tidy, Off street parking.

Jill and Malcolm are a welcoming and friendly couple and rightly proud of this property. We were fortunate to be greeted by them both and whilst Jill served up some gorgeous home baked cookies Malcolm described some good walking routes. Everything is clean and tidy along with provision of those simple things like tea, coffee, sugar and milk. Jill has put a larger table in the kitchen/dinning room so don't be misled by the photograph.

The location is excellent; you can drive into the city in 4 minutes or better still walk in via Pelaw Woods and the river in 15-20 minutes. Walking is by far the best as you can take in the stunning views of this world heritage city as you descend to the river through the woods.

Across the road is a Sainsbury's Local and a very good Lebanese takeaway.

The big question and test of a property is this; 'Will we return?' "Yes, and soon I hope".

Ideal place to stay - comfortable, clean and close to Durham riverside

The owner, Jill, met us in the house upon our arrival, with homemade biscuits in the oven and the kettle on for a fresh brew - a welcome indeed! She took her time to talk us through the house and even explained the best walking routes into Durham city. We found the house to be very clean & comfortable. Just as the photograph on HomeAway suggested, the kitchen is a beautiful space in the house, and is very well equipped. The bedrooms are spacious with truly comfortable beds, the bathrooms too are spacious, both fitted with great showers. The house is well situated, well within walking distance of Durham city centre. Within 1-2 mins of the house one can reach a delightful footprint which cuts through Pelaw wood, after crossing an interesting footbridge, and heads down to the riverside walk beside Hild & Bede college - 10 to 15 mins of rich woodland that offers some great views of the cathedral.

Great location, lovely cottage

We had a lovely stay at Cades House. Jill welcomed us with home made cookies and gave us lots of helpful information for our visit to Durham. The house is ideally located being only a fifteen minute walk from the river and the city centre. There are three spacious bedrooms, a well equipped dining kitchen and private parking space to the rear. There is also a lovely outside sitting area. I would recommend the house to anyone wanting to visit the city of Durham.
