About Teri MCCoy

Hi! We are the McCoy family. We have four children (ranging from 30-years old to 13-years old), a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and 2 grandsons! We are living proof that fun can be had for all ages at a Tickfaw River Rental!

Our Family Story: We bought our first boat approximately 15 years ago, and have enjoyed every moment! For 10 years, we rented a camp on the Tickfaw River with many family members. These vacations have been fun for every person involved. Throughout the years we have had elderly and babies join us for the fun!

After 10 years of renting a camp, we decided to invest in our own camp and call it the Reel McCoy River Retreat. The location is close enough to New Orleans or Baton Rouge, so you can invite people to visit for the day! Relax & enjoy your time away from the city. This camp really has the best view of the river! You can ski right in front of the camp! You can bring inflattables and relax in the water! You can sit in the game room or the hottub & look out on the wonderful river view. Head up to the lighthouse and watch the sun set on the horizon! Nothing beats relaxing & watching the sunset on the Tickfaw River.

Teri MCCoy purchased this house in 2014

Beautiful Views, Great Home

  • 4 of 5

The house is roomy and comfortable. The beds are nice, and there is a great setup for entertaining and cooking. I would return here in a heartbeat... The sunrise and sunsets here were awesome. Our group LOVED the house.

The only negative was not having access to a boat. One of the major reasons I rented the place was to enjoy the water and take a boat out. I did not see that a boat was not included in the rental before getting the rental agreement. That was a big bummer for all of us. Other than that, it was a perfect place to enjoy a long weekend.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed the house. Everytime I go out on the deck, the view takes my breath away. I am sorry that you thought a boat came with the rental but hope you will be back again soon.

Amazing place!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough good things about this home! I am so happy we found this! The home was very spacious and fit our family perfectly. We loved having the separate area downstairs and the wrap around porch was great. We also loved having the game room to hangout in when we didn't want to be in the house anymore. Being on the water was a great touch too. Thank you for opening your home up to us. We can't wait to visit again!

Wonderful home...Unable to use 3rd bedroom

  • 2 of 5

The house/location is an excellent place to stay for a small/large group. Beautiful sunsets on river/canal. Unfortunately, when our group of three couples stayed there had been recent flooding. We needed the third bedroom which was located in the basement. Upon arrival we noticed many large, live and dying cockroaches, along with a strong tar or chemical smell. None of the windows opened in the basement Nor do the doors have screens. There was a can of cockroach spray on the counter and a mop bucket w/black tar/sealant. It seems they had recently water proofed/sealed the supports in basement which is exactly where the toxic smell was coming from. The sealant is for outside use...and should not have been used inside the home, with no ventilation. (The mop bucket, squeegee and black tar sealant were still wet/in basement...maybe it had recently been applied?). As bedtime arrived we tried sleeping in the basement bedroom but the smell from the "chemicals" was not safe to breathe. Also noticed more cockroaches, lizards, and not feeling well due to the smell. We headed upstairs and slept on the two coaches in the living room. On day two the smell/roaches had gotten worse. (Record high temps with no way to open windows). The smell is now evident on the second floor (or main floor) along with a few more roaches. It was decided it was safest/best to sleep in the boat house. We slept on the floor of the boat house for the remaining two nights ... fresh/clean air, no roaches, no lizards, no moldy grey mildew on furniture...but no mattress.

One of the basement doors has water in the glass, another has duct tape, flood bags in front of another...all due to flooding...which I completely understand. But, I did send an email to owner a few weeks prior to our arrival asking about flooding. I feel that the homeowner should have informed us that they did have Record rainfall so that we could have looked at a different location.

Had we not needed the 3rd room in the basement this would have been a wonderful vacation home...but to have two adults sleeping on floors of the boat house more than ruined the stay.

We plan on coming back for another visit...but will stay with neighbors.

The home really is an excellent vacation spot...maybe bad timing for us due to flooding.

Note: owners recommended some really cool bars along the river for us to visit...but they were closed during our visit due to winter season. Knowing this we would have looked elsewhere.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry you were not happy with our home and do take pride in keeping it in good condition. If we were notified of your issues during your stay we would have been able to drive out and address them at that time. Most guests consider the basement the best room in the house because of the beautiful river views. We have owned the home for just over two years and have NEVER applied tar or other chemical sealants inside of the home. We do have our cleaning lady mop with a Lysol scented disinfectant prior to the arrival of each new guest to ensure a clean and germ-free environment. The mop being wet would be the result of her mopping and not the application of any harsh chemicals. Or, possibly you smelled the scented wax warmer plugged in on the counter. One of the consequences of significant flooding is the appearance of roaches after the water has subsided. We have aggressively dealt with this situation by having the home sprayed. However, after a spraying, we do see dead roaches for the next couple of days. We do leave a can of roach spray under the cabinet in the downstairs bathroom, like many homeowners do, but it is not left on the counter. We do not have “record high” temps in November. The downstairs living area has a very effective a/c unit that is capable of keeping the entire downstairs area very comfortable, even in the extreme temps of July and August when temps reach the upper 90s. During your stay the temps may have reached 80, but the a/c is more than capable of keeping that area quite cool. The unit was in working order prior to your visit and also after your visit. When you called, we acknowledged that the home did, in fact, flood. We had multiple rental guests prior to your stay and after your stay and they had no issues with their accommodations. My mother and child slept in the basement the weekend prior to your arrival with no issues, but I do hope your guests at least slept on the comfy sofa’s in the game room and not the floor. Tin Lizzy’s and The Prop Stop typically are NOT open during weekdays, even in the summer, except for the major summer holidays. If asked, we would have gladly provided this information.

My birthday weekend

  • 5 of 5

I would like to thank the owners for giving us the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful lakehouse. It was very clean and comfortable. The owners are very pleasant. She answered all of my questions before arriving so we were fully prepared once we arrived. The place is beautiful inside. The main floor in the living area with a bathrooom and kitchen. The balcony wraps all around so you can step outside and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. You can also watch all of the boats and jt skis riding in the river. The upstairs in beautiful. The master bedroom and a guest room with 2 queen beds have there own bathrooms. That is a plus. Downstairs is a whole other apartment. Its got a full kitchen and bath with a living area and shower. There are many places to go and relax if you feel you want some privacy. It slept 8 comfotably and has many comfortable couches. TVs everywhere. We visited a place on the River that is a bar and grill. They also offer entertainment. We went by boat but it is accecible by car as well. The owners are so welcoming and kind. The music was great. We visited another placed by boat called the Prop Stop. They serve great hamburgers. As we continued down the river it opens up into a beautiful lake. We found a place to stop that was shallow enough for us to float on our tubes. The sunset that day was beautiful as well. The following day we fished and caught many. We cooked them that night. Yum. Upon arriving back we went to the top of the boathouse where she offers a beautiful gameroom that has a bean bags game and a pool table. The porch wraps around it as well. We did bar b que and played pool with our son. Its a great family getaway. It has a tv and stereo as well as comfortable hammock and of course the hot tub. We are looking forward to visiting this place again soon. Hoping to meet the owners and share a weekend with them They are so kind and communicate beautifully. This birthday weekend will surely be remembered. The people of that area are very kind and welcoming. We even made friends that have offfered us to join them in the Mardi Gras boat parade that they have down there. I would like to say thank you so very much for sharing your beautiful place with others. Your friend Sonia and Mickey Comboy.
