About the property

Village Row-house, 3 Bedrooms, Two Baths, Walled Garden And View Terrace

No car is necessary to live here, as the village includes grocery shops, cafes, bakeries, a butcher shop, a weekly open market, an ATM and other amenities necessary for everyday life. The house includes two master bedrooms, one children's bedroom with bunk beds, clothes washer and dryer and a small study (part of the upstairs loft-bedroom). It also has a small garden off the main living level, ideal for meals in warm weather. Swimming is available in Herault river at the edge of town, about fifteen minutes' walk from the front door. The old village is densely built, with many small streets and pedestrian passageways. But in about ten minutes' walk, one quickly reaches the surrounding countryside. This consists of wooded hills, vineyards, and orchards.

Why James Rule chose Clermont-l'Herault area

This is a perfect retreat for relaxation and study in a magnificent part of the world. After traveling to this region for many years, I decided to choose a house for the family that would serve as a place where we could be at home and live simply and cheaply, yet also have all sorts of nearby destinations for local and regional excursions. Nearby places of note include the church at St. Guilhem le Desert (from which one of the cloisters in the New York museum by that name was taken); the Pont de Gard (the Roman aqueduct over the Gard River); Greek ruins at Enserun; cities including Montpellier, Toulouse and Uzes; Mediterranean beaches; and many charming nearby villages and recreation sites. The latter include places for horse-back riding, kayaking, wind-surfing, antiquing, and hiking. The region abounds in good restaurants and wonderful local food, for those who prefer to cook at home. There are many excellent wineries. The town is at the foot of the Cevennes mountains, at the beginning of the coastal plain that leads to the famous beaches around the city of Sete.

What makes this house unique

Aniane is a working village, with its own all-year economic life. Unlike many villages in the region that are mainly populated by visitors from elsewhere, Aniane provides the experience of living in a different kind of urban environment from what most north Americans know. The loft-bedroom at the top of the house is extremely peaceful, a perfect place for writing and thinking. It opens onto a lovely roof terrace with 180-degree views of the surrounding countryside.
