Kingfisher House sits on banks of the Gastineau Channel. The front of the home gives way to the lush tide grass of the Mendenhall Wildlife Reserve. Beyond is the Mendenhall Glacier and surrounding mountains. This setting makes the home both a great place to base your Alaska adventures and a wonderful place to relax.
Hike or fish right from the front door, fishing poles and boots are provided
Popular fishing spots include right out front in the Gastineau Channel, a half mile away at Fish Creek and three miles away at Picnic Cove. All are easily accessible and successful spots. Four medium weight spin casting rods are provided and include enough swivels and spoons to get started.
Five bikes are available, two small children's bikes and three adults sized.Biking in the neighborhood or further out North Douglas is a popular activity.
A selection of rubber boots are provided for tromping around the wetlands.
We have furnished the home with good quality furniture. Likewise all beds and linens are new and good quality.
The home has four bedrooms and sleeps nine easily.
The master bedroom suite is on the second floor, it includes two separate sinks and shower and a sitting area with probably the best views in the house. Also on the second floor are two other bedrooms which share a full bath with a jetted Jacuzzi tub. Both are spacious, one having a queen bed and the other a queen and a single. Both have water views.
The first floor is barrier free including the 4th bedroom, which doubles as a media room when not used as a bedroom. Upon request we will add a standard queen bed to the room. It is big enough that it is still quite usable as a tv room.
The kitchen includes a breakfast nook and seating at an island. Top quality cookware and all utensils needed for home cooking are available.
The dinning table seats eight and like every area of the home has a terrific view.
Decks to either side of the house provide a relaxing place to take in the views. Enjoy morning coffee or the beautiful sunsets.
Bob is a (semi) retired marine engineer and Carrie is studying to be a nurse after raising a family.
Robert Cruise purchased this house in 1996
We are so fortunate to have found this piece of property to build our home! It has everything we had been looking for; a safe place to raise our children, beautiful views, close to the ski area and boat launch, quiet and peaceful and so many adventures available right out the front door.
What makes this home so unique is the ability to launch adventures from your front door or just relax and enjoy the beautiful setting.
I want to thank Robert for an amazing stay! We went on a 3 week trip that included Homer, Seward, Juneau, Anchorage and Seattle - and by far this house was the best. As soon as you walk in, you realize you're in a real vacation home, that has all the great amenities - ease of access, fabulous spot, amazing breathtaking views, great living room and kitchen/dining room, and comfortable and spacious upstairs area for all the bedrooms. We only stayed 4 days in Juneau and in retrospect wish we could have stayed longer...
In addition, we had one small need during our stay and I must say Robert is such an amazing host, he not only responded immediately to our ask, but went out of his way (literally!) to make us feel at home and comfortable.
I have stayed in many homes in the past in various cities/countries, and during my 10-15 years of travel, I have to say the Water Front Adventure Base is top 3 in my list and we will definitely come back again.
Thank you Robert for your hospitality and for being a fabulous host!
We loved our time in your beautiful home! We can't think of a better location for a Juneau vacation. The kids were thrilled with the boots you left out and went fishing every day we were there! It was such a treat to wake up to the glorious nature reserve and the bald eagles calling to each other out our window. A little piece of heaven. We had a hard time getting ourselves to leave the property in order to explore the rest of the area! I hope that future guests enjoy the pack and play we left. Thank you!
This house was great for our extended family vacation. Our family of four, which includes a teenage daughter and teenage son, as well as my brother and his wife, and my sister and her husband, all had plenty of room and personal privacy. It has 3 official bedrooms, and a bed in the TV room. My daughter chose to sleep on the couch in the living room so she could fall asleep looking at the view.
The view is amazing. You'll see the Mendenhall Glacier from the living room, dining area, kitchen and upstairs bedroom. You'll also see the tide go in and out which shows a different scene every time.
The house was easy to find and only about 20 minutes drive from the airport. It was in a quiet neighborhood and gave us a great base for an easy start to our day and relaxing nights. It is well stocked with dishes, pots, pans, and linens. Three grocery stores are within a 15 minute drive.
Bob was very helpful with answering questions before and during our stay. We had one small issue at the house which he corrected quickly.
If we go to Juneau again, I would want to stay there again.
We had a wonderful family vacation. And the view was spectacular! Expansive view of the channel, mountains and Mendenhall Glacier! We couldn't stop taking pictures of it, especially at sunset!
The rooms were spacious and comfortable. We loved just sitting on one of several decks and gazing out at the view. Our kids (ages 3, 4, and 6) wanted to live there. : )
The location was relatively close to downtown Juneau, so easy to get around.
The owners were helpful and responsive.
Thank you for a truly lovely family vacation!
This property was exactly what we hoped for! The home was clean, well stocked and very roomy!
The views of every thing imaginable from upstairs and down, and on the decks were out of this world.
The Kingfisher visited us everyday to put on his show which the home is aptly named for. The eagles got
to know us and hung close by, thanks to our fishing success. The weather was 50/50 sun and rain while we there
but when you are in these surroundings you don't seem to care.
We will be back again! Just need to find another comparable home close by on Douglas Island where we can bring more of our families.
Thanks again Bob and Carrie!! Cheers Rick, Colleen, Heath, Bob, Roma, Steve, and Janey!
We were in Juneau for our son's wedding, and Kingfisher House was the perfect headquarters for us. My elderly parents had the bedroom/tv room downstairs and could easily retreat whenever they needed to. We cooked a great deal for pre-wedding events and the reception, and the kitchen had plenty of room and supplies for all of our needs from BBQing to pie baking. The house is roomy enough for hosting dining events. Dinner guests could spread out throughout the downstairs and both decks.
Best of all was the fabulous view. At any time of day and from any window or outdoor space, we could watch wildlife in the marsh and water all around us. Two otters kept us entertained for hours.
My husband and I look forward to returning to Kingfisher House again someday. Robert stayed in touch with us and left tips for shopping, dining, etc. that we found extremely useful. We also used the fishing poles and canoe- all ready for our use. Thank you, Robert.
