The Short of it........
The Longshot Cabin has three bedrooms and two baths. One king-size bed, one queen-size bed, one full-size bed and twin bunk beds, accommodating eight guests. The kitchen is equipped with new cabinets, granite countertops, new dishwasher, new built-in microwave, coffee pot, toaster, cookware, dishes, flatware for eight guests. All rooms are on one level for easy access. We furnish paper goods, soaps, shampoo, dishwasher and laundry tabs, towels/washcloths, fresh sheets for all beds. We clean and maintain the Longshot ourselves and we're picky!
The Long of it........
The Longshot Cabin (we named it after ourselves, we are the Longs) is located at 720 High Street, Red River, NM 87558. It is on the East side of the town of Red River. When coming into the town from the East, take the right fork prior to the gas pumps, this is High Street. The second house on High Street is the Longshot Cabin; notice the chapel beside the cabin. (We will be remodeling the chapel and making it “The Little Deuce Coupe,” a cabin just for couples.)
The Longshot Cabin has one huge advantage – it is all on one level. It is ideal for folks that don’t want to or can’t do stairs. The East entrance is one step into the cabin, once in; all is on the same level. The porch is also one level. Looking out the family room west windows, you can see the ski lift. Late evening, watch for the deer to come down to eat the hay with the horses at the stable. In the summer, if you hear banging, it’s probably a bear trying to get into the dumpsters! The Longshot Cabin is great for a walk through town yet away from of all the noise and Main street commotion for peace and quiet when you are ready to relax.
You may park in the driveway or in front of the cabin. The door on the East side adjacent to the driveway has the keyless lock and is used as the entrance. When you book the Longshot, a code to the keyless lock and information on how to use the code will be sent to you by e-mail. Check-in is 3:00 PM and Check-out is 10:00 AM. (These times are necessary in order to get the cabin cleaned prior to the arrival of the next guests.)
We purchased the cabin December 2014 and immediately began remodeling it. The Longshot has new kitchen cabinets, granite counter tops, new microwave and dishwasher. We added wood accents and fresh paint and thoroughly cleaned the entire cabin. The cabin is carpeted in the family room and the three bedrooms. Kitchen, dining room and bathrooms are tiled. The master bedroom is spacious with king-size bed and with a master bathroom adjacent to the bedroom. The master bath has a tub with shower, toilet with a door, the sink vanity and closet separate. The cabin has two additional bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, and a third bedroom, the bunk room, with bunk beds, and a full-size bed, ideal for bunking up the kids. These two bedrooms use the hall bathroom which has tub with shower, vanity sink and commode, with the washer and dryer located in this bathroom. Let me know if you need a pac & play for a little one and I will put one out for you. The cabin will accommodate eight people comfortably and has beds for eight.
The living area has a flat screen TV with local channels i.e Albuquerque. We have a number of paperbacks on our book shelves, games, and a couple of decks of cards for quiet times when you are not out and about. We do not have a phone or Wi-Fi in the cabin. We assume everyone these days has a cell phone. AT&T, Verizon work at the cabin, other carriers may also, but we know for sure AT&T and Verizon does. Wi-Fi is available at the library just across the street, usually 3G or better.
The Longshot cabin has a washer and dryer for your personal laundry and in case you run out of towels. We furnish laundry tabs and dryer sheets for your convenience. The cabin has a dishwasher and we furnish dishwasher tabs. We also provide towels, linens, and supplies, such as, toilet paper, dishwashing liquid, and trash bags. The cabin has a coffee pot, toaster, crock pot, full set of dishes and silverware for eight people, pots and pans, microwave.
The Longshot Cabin has a porch for sitting and a covered area for grilling or just relaxing. A grill for cooking out and a table for outdoor eating are under the covered area. Summer nights are cool and after a summer rain shower the temperature can easily get down into the 50s! A sweater feels good!
Please NO SMOKING in the cabin. If you are a smoker, please smoke outside and carefully dispose of all butts. New Mexico has been a drought for more than three years. A careless butt could burn our beautiful forest and our forest would not recover in our lifetimes.
PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED at the Longshot Cabin. Although your pet may be the most well behaved dog or cat, many people have allergies to dogs and cats. We understand you love your pets but to better accommodate everyone, we must say “no pets allowed.”
Red River has a small grocery store and a number of restaurants. Some of the more popular restaurants require reservations. Red River has a celebration for every holiday and seems to make some holidays up! It is a fun town. At the Longshot Cabin, you will be close enough to Main Street to walk to all the “doings” yet far enough away to enjoy some quiet relaxing time too.
So you want to stay at the Longshot Cabin……
February 2016 Homeaway/VRBO has started charging the traveler a fee of 4-10% on a sliding scale. This fee does not come to the owners but goes directly to Homeaway for "improvements to" and advertising of Homeaway. I hate this for our guests, but can't do anything about it. My apologies for this additional fee. (We, the owners, pay over $900 for the listing, should be enough.)
You will be charged the nightly rate, plus Gross Receipts/Lodgers Tax, and $125 cleaning/supplies fee and a refundable damage deposit per stay. Most times we have a three (3) night minimum. Bag and dispose of your trash at the dumpsters in town. Also, put your dishes in the dishwasher and turn the dishwasher on. Trash or dirty dishes will result in a charge of $25 against your damage deposit. Occasionally, due to commitments, we have to hire cleaning folks to clean the cabin and they don’t like to wash dishes or take out trash, thus the $25 for either one. We clean the Longshot Cabin most of the time ourselves and we don’t like to do dishes or take out trash either! Any damages will also be charged against your damage deposit. If something doesn’t work properly, tell us and we will take care of it. We have enjoyed remodeling the Longshot Cabin and have enjoyed staying in town to take part in all the Red River “doings” and believe you will too. Thanks in advance for treating the Longshot Cabin with the respect you would like for your own home.
JUST A LITTLE MORE.....FYI
We also own and rent the Michael Martin Murphey Cabin on Bobcat Pass (VRBO LISTING 562811. Check it out too if you want to be out of town). After retirement and careful thought, we have decided to manage the MMM cabin and the Longshot Cabin ourselves rather than chose a management company. We believe we can provide our guests with a high quality rental property for less by renting through VRBO. We will not be charging booking fees, however, as I stated above Homeaway/VRBO has now started charging the traveler a service fee. We collect a damage deposit. Charges against your Damage Deposit will be accessed only if you damage something, leave trash, dirty dishes, have a pet in the cabin or smoke in the cabin; otherwise, we gladly refund your damage deposit after cleaning. We have always cleaned and maintained the MMM Cabin and plan to do the same with the Longshot Cabin. We believe, as owners, we can clean and maintain the cabins with a commitment that most cleaning services do not provide. We want our guests to feel they have received value for vacation rental dollars and as our guests, we want you to be comfortable and feel at ease telling us when something is good and also, when something isn’t. If you need something or have a problem, tell us. Thank you for considering the our cabins.
We are Faye and Finis Long. I, Faye worked and retired from Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. Finis has not retired yet…..three bad days in row? Even while working, we spent every weekend in Eagle Nest and Red River. We just couldn’t see staying in the city when the beautiful mountains of New Mexico were only three hours away. Clean air, relaxed small town atmosphere, no traffic, we became addicted. After retirement, what to do? For years we used a management company in Red River to manage our nightly rental property. After retiring, and careful thought, we decided to manage our nightly rental properties ourselves rather than have a management company. We came to the conclusion that we could provide our guests with a high quality rental property for less by renting through VRBO. We currently have the Michael Martin Murphey Cabin on Bobcat Pass and the Longshot Cabin in Red River on High Street. So, whether you want to stay out of town or in town, we have a property that we maintain, clean and rent as a nightly rental. We do not charge booking fees, (aka credit card fees, we will absorb those fees as a cost of doing business with you), damage insurance (damage charges will be only if you damage something). We do charge a cleaning fee of $100 per stay. We clean and maintain our two cabins ourselves. Because the properties belong to us, we care. We clean and maintain both homes with a commitment that most cleaning services do not provide. We live close by and are available if there is a problem. We try to meet all of our guests as a courtesy and so our guests will know us and feel comfortable when contacting us. We love having guests enjoy both the Longshot and the Murphey Cabin depending on whether you prefer in-town or out-of-town cabin. We hope our returning guests will book their favorite cabin, be it the Longshot or the MMM Cabin through VRBO and our new guests will feel free to call us with their questions.
Faye and Finis Long purchased this cabin in 2014
We purchased this property around the Christmas Holiday 2014 and began remodeling it. We love doing remodeling, although we are weekend warriors! We wanted a property in town to use ourselves on occasion when the snow is just tooo deep on Bobcat Pass. It is also, a property for our "old age." It has no stairs, everything is on one level. Walking in from the outside is only a half-a-step into the cabin. We love cowboy and wildlife decor and have collected too much to put in one place. We love the rustic life but also want all the comforts of home. No "off the grid" business.....give us a dishwasher and let's get out and see the sights! The Longshot cabin is located in an area that has it all. In town, with all the celebrations and hoop-la, fishing ponds for the kids, the river itself, skiing and just a short drive to wilderness, hiking trails, and 4-wheeling in the Carson National Forest. If family can't agree on the fun for the day, shopping is close enough to walk and the rest can 4-wheel to Goose Lake, then all return for a cookout at the Longshot in the evening while sharing the fun events of the day and "just how big that trout was that got away".
The Longshot is all on one level, no stairs. Family members old and young can come and feel independent at the Longshot. The Longshot has all the comforts of home, washer, dryer, dishwasher, and we furnish the necessities. The Longshot is on High Street, relatively quiet street, one block over is Main with all the action. Plenty of play area on the porch and under the patio cover for the little guys. The Longshot is on the shuttle line. If your destination is farther than you want to walk, give them a call, they will pick you up.
The Longshot Cabin is located on the East end of town where most of the adult night life entertainment is located....walk to the Bull 'o Woods or Motherlode and walk home....no worries!
Our guests just need their personal items and food and the enthusiasm to have a good time in the unique town of Red River and surrounding area. Check out the Red River website for all the doings throughout the year. Use the Longshot as your home base and enjoy it all, if it is only getting away from the sweltering summer heat in our neighboring states. (by the way, each bedroom has a ceiling fan!) Welcome to the beautiful mountains of New Mexico!
Clean, well equipped, close for kids to go sledding, loved having the deer come right up to the cabin
We came as a last minute family trip and had a wonderful time. The home is simply lovely. Perfect for families. Location couldn't have been better. We are gonna try and come back again next year and we will for sure book this home again. I also wanted to thank the oweners for allowing us to stay an extra night on short notice. We just weren't ready to go home.
Great quiet location. All the amenities of home plus a great outdoor space right across the street from the grassy area where the deer come nightly to graze. We loved it. Will stay here again when we come back! Did not want to go home!
Great property, well equipped, and well positioned in town. We had everything we needed inside and on the patio.Enjoyed visiting on the patio with a fire every night. Clean property and good people to deal with. The 5 separate beds were perfect for our group without the need to share beds. Fully equipped kitchen allowed us to prepare all the meals we wanted.
Almost at the edge of town with deer visiting daily. Nice 10 minute walk through town to the store, several restaurants closer.
We will try to book the same place when we go back.
Everything was just great at the house. It was fully stocked with kitchen and bath supplies. The outdoor fireplace was wonderful and the owners even brought firewood for us. Definitely would rent property again.
We had a wonderful time at the Long Shot cabin! Having just one level was perfect since we had 3 generations -- including a very active one year old. We loved the convenience and walkability (with a stroller!) and appreciated the quiet area of town. The spacious patio was perfect for quiet evenings after the baby was asleep. The cabin's interior is well furnished and attractive. We appreciated the owners' attention to all important details! We would love to come again!
