Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday home in Lamplugh - Low Millgillhead

Three houses sleeping 12, 12 & 4; Can sleep a total of 28 people

Here we have three Georgian houses, all very different from each other, each with their own gardens and own privacy, yet with the possibility of taking all three together to sleep up to 28 if you so wish.

The main house, Low Millgillhead sleeps 12 and offers comfortable accommodation with an open fire, good sized bedrooms and a well equipped kitchen with separate dining room. Many of the original features have been retained and it has an acre of gardens to the front and the back of the house.

Croft House is a beautiful barn conversion with a fantastic sitting room with dining area – ideal for group or family get togethers. The mature gardens have interesting nooks to explore, including a secret garden hidden away amongst the rhododendrons.

Rose Cottage is a pretty cottage sleeping four people. An open fire in the sitting room gives the cottage a cosy feel and up the spiral staircase is a twin and a double bedroom. The garden outside is lovely.

Details for holiday home Croft House, 6 Bedrooms, Sleeps 12, 2 Bathrooms, 1 Separate WC

A spacious hallway leads to two double bedrooms, one twin bedroom, a bunk bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs are two further bedrooms plus a shower room. All the bedrooms have their own sink and there is a third toilet.

The kitchen is upstairs and is fully furnished with a large range cooker, fridge, dishwasher and microwave. Upstairs the sitting room is large with a dining area to seat twelve in style. There are a variety of board games for entertainment, as well as a wide screen TV with DVD.

The garden is large with a big chestnut tree to provide some shade in the summer and conkers in the Autumn. There is also a secret garden over one of the bridges across the stream. There are many small nooks and crannies and plenty of outdoor furniture to help you enjoy the beauty of it all.

The house is heated by gas central heating. Pets are welcome.

Croft House. Beautiful gardens

  • 4 of 5

My extended family stayed at Croft House Aug 2012. A Tesco delivery arranged for our arrival gave us a good start. We found the house on the whole to be well equipped, even a dog bowl and fishing nets (although couldn't find scissors!). The kitchen was fairly small (2 cooks max!) but was well stocked with plenty of equipment. It didn't have any children's sized plates/cups/cutlery but we'd brought our own anyway. It had a dishwasher, various cleaning items incl dishwasher tablets, washing machine and tumble dryer, range cooker was great once we'd worked out how to use it, and it was good to have 2 fridges (and 1 freezer). There are no towels/hand towels/hand wash/soap/loo roll, so be sure to bring your own. There are dish towels though. The decor is a nice relaxed feel, nothing too new or fussy (sofas a little floppy though!). It is an upside down style house with the kitchen, living room, shower room and 2 bedrooms upstairs and bathroom + 4 bedrooms downstairs.

We didn't have the best weather, which was a shame as it meant we couldn't make full use of the gardens....and the gardens were the best bit! A big lawned area with a babbling brook/stream running through it (can get quite fast flowing after heavy rain so watch small children), total privacy provided by lovely old trees, little wooden bridges across the stream that lead to a hidden picnic area and wooded areas behind. Some parts a little treacherous for younger children but older ones (8yrs+) will find it a delight to explore. There's a big patio area too and ample parking. The only thing it missed was a rope swing from the trees and perhaps some outdoor play toys! For us, Croft was the better house of the 2 large ones simply due to the gardens and privacy.

The local area was charming and peaceful. We managed to find a little shop at a nearby static caravan park (turn right out of the house then right at the top of the lane). We can recommend the beautiful waterfall at Buttermere and the new cafe that sells lovely tray bakes and milkshakes! There is a lovely walk to be had around Loweswater. Not impressed with Kirkstile Inn food sadly - expensive for such small portions. Ravensglass railway at Eskdale was nice (nearby Boot is pretty and has a nice pub for food - and free parking). Nearby Ennerdale lake was nice to walk around, as was Grasmere and Muncaster Castle gets a big thumbs up too.

All in all a lovely week in a lovely house in a lovely area

Lamplugh is the perfect starting place to explore the Lake District. Loweswater is the nearest lake, just 3 miles away. Here there are lovely lakeside walks through the woods with an award winning pub at the other end. Ennerdale Lake is 4 miles in the other direction and here you will still see more sheep than people! As well as low level walks there is good mountain walking and mountain biking with some of the Lake District’s highest mountains in the Ennerdale valley.

The nearst town, Cockermouth is a 15 minute drive from Lamplugh and has pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. It also houses Jennings Brewery, the Lake District’s best known brewer of fine ales – well worth a visit!

Within easy reach are several interesting stately homes with fantastic gardens, the steam railway at Eskdale, horse riding over the moors, go-karting at Maryport and Go-Ape at Whinlatter near Keswick.
