Delightful but for door screen.

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our stay, and our only complaint is the screen for blacking out the door windows. It felt inadequate to be honest and very out of line with the cost of the property. A pair of shutters on the outside would be sweet.

Gorgeous Property but Several Snags Encountered.

  • 4 of 5

We booked Unique Hideaway Cottage because it offered simple bothie-style accommodation in a rural setting; the perfect combination for a relaxing break.  Although the property undoubtedly oozed antiquated charm, we felt that there were several modifications required in order to justify the nightly rental rate of £107 (including fee's).

Whilst acknowledging that ours was a late booking (made the day before arrival), we didn't receive any communication from the property owner until 4 hours prior to check-in.  Neither of us are mobile phone owners, so we couldn't leave home first thing in the morning to explore Aberdeenshire, as we'd actually planned; but instead spent our time manning the pc and landline. Not only was this frustrating, but it was also completely unnecessary ~ Owners Direct have a perfectly adequate Hospitality App which would have given us all the information required, had the owner uploaded it.

Upon arrival we found a bucket of kindling for the log burner, but no newspaper or firelighters.  A great excuse for my husband to play at boy-scout while I put the kettle on; which is when I discovered a half-used one-pint milk carton in the fridge.  I do understand the concept of self-catering and had brought along my own provisions, but feel quite strongly that if you are going to leave me milk ... either leave me a full carton or decant a small drop of milk into a jug, don't leave me a half-used carton as that makes it look like I'm getting someone else's left-overs.

Our second problem was that the listing clearly stated that the facilities included a microwave and a hob.  We shopped accordingly and then found that our microwave meals were useless ~ there was no microwave there!  Other inaccuracies in the listing include the bed being king-size (it's double) and the lovely animal skin in front of the fire had also gone walk-about.

None of these things were deal-breakers as we went there to have a nice time ~ and that's exactly what we had.  I suspect that the issues encountered were oversights due to the hosts' inexperience in hospitality ... and given time, they'll find their feet.

It would be helpful if the listing stated only one bath-sheet & one face-cloth is allocated per guest; had I known then I'd have brought an additional towel for my hair. Maybe a clock so non-mobile-owners can tell the time? And perhaps a curtain over the glass-panel door to block-out light early morning? Small things that are easily sorted :)

The cottage was absolutely beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Place is absolutely beautiful. Will, the owner, was very responsive and accommodating.

The cottage is in a large estate within the castle grounds. Feel free to roam in the large walled garden across from the cottage, and walk around the property which has a number of sheep and beautiful vegetation.

The cottage was very comfortable and clean. Perfect to disconnect from everything.

Highly recommended!
