Great Place for a New England Getaway
Proximity to the beach is fantastic and the town of Madison is small but sophisticated. Every meal I had in town was good. I would hesitate to stay anywhere else since I am not a crowds person. Property is a tale of extremes. The master bedroom is heavenly and modern with these amazing operable skylights overlooking the sound. The lack of drawer storage in the master makes it impossible to unpack, so I wasn't crazy about living out of a suitcase for ten days. Bathrooms are beautifully and tastefully redone. It is time for a towel remake as most of the downstairs towels are fraying. Rest of the house is charming with lots of antiques and interesting books. Hot days are no big deal with all of the air conditioning units about the house. It may be time for a trinket edit. I found myself itching to move many of the trinkets to a closet so I could at least look out of the kitchen window or have enough room to prepare a meal. Roger is very responsive and helpful. He made our vacation go smoothly with repairs and restaurant recommendations. We look forward to returning in the next couple of years.

The perfect beach getaway
This is our home away from home. The kids cry every time we leave. We have rented this house for 2-3 weeks for the last 3 summers. The house is perfectly situated steps from the beach so the kids can go back and forth all day. The master bedroom is on the top floor with spectacular water views and custom windows that open up and out creating little Juliet balconies to watch the sunset and moonrise. There are plenty of bedrooms for kids to share or each have their own. We grill outdoors every night while looking out on the water and watching the sun set. It is perfect. I can't say enough about the house, the beach, the town, the neighbors , the food and the lovely owners who are very accommodating. If we could rent it all summer we would.

Wonderful family vacation
This was a wonderful house for a family getaway. Our stay was 2 weeks. Its beach is very friendly for young children, especially at low-tide where the wading distance is 100+ feet. At the end of a dead-end street with no onstreet parking, there is very little car traffic and remains quiet. (Note: limited parking also means some car shuffling if you have day visitors or more than two cars.) The community of neighbors is friendly and wonderful - many having summered there for 30+ years. They often gather beachside for the everyday beautiful sunsets. Right next to the state beach, there is a TON of avian traffic. We woke up every morning to birdsongs and watched ospreys and cormorants fishing for breakfast. Our two year old excitedly decided the top bunk in one room would become an osprey nest. The morning water is often glassy and easy to kayak around to nearby sandbars where the birds are resting. There are some quirks to the house, but you must know what you're getting into with a 100 year old house that has had several renovations and additions. All the bedrooms are upstairs, and the stairs are fairly steep - so it would be a challenge for anyone with knee/hip problems or mobility issues. The top floor bedroom is remarkable and was finished with unique windows that provide a breathtaking atmosphere. It almost feels like being on a yacht - without the chance of seasickness. Also of note, the rooms are mostly compact (again, 100 year old house) and are amply decorated with things likely found in the nearby antique haven of Clinton. Nothing particularly fragile - but I would note that any rambunctious kid play would best be had outside. With the good sized yard and beach steps away, this shouldn't be a problem. The easy on-off of I-95 made it extremely convenient for our 'staycation.' We continued to commute to New Haven for work and, because it was all highway, it was almost as quick and easy as commuting across town. And it felt like a relaxing vacation without using any vacation days! Overall, highly recommended. Nearby services used and recommended: Indian River Marina kayak rental. Artful Living community theater, Bishop's Orchard, Lyman Orchards (Middlefield), KidCity (Middletown), Restaurants - Moxie, The Clam Castle, The Place (Guilford), Ashley's Ice Cream

Why they chose this property

Historic Connecticut shoreline town, with many 18th century houses and a few homes preserved from the 17th century. Historic town green hosting concerts, antique fairs and weekly farmers market. Combines old New England feel with beach-side living. In addition to the gentle sand beaches located steps away from our house, Madison has a number of beautiful public beaches. Nearby Hammonassett State Park has miles of beaches, walking trails and wooded areas. Wonderful location for bicycling around town or along the coast. A short, scenic drive to other charming seaside towns including Guilford, Old Saybrook, Essex and Old Lyme. Historic Mystic, Connecticut and Providence and Newport, Rhode Island are easy day trips. Only a half hour away by car, New Haven is the closest city and features well-known theatre companies, art and natural history museums, delicious Italian food and the historic Yale campus. New York City is less than 2 hours away by car and also accessible by commuter train.
