About Kevin R Sauvage

I built this home by myself, pouring the footings on my 50th birthday and spending every available moment for the next 2 years on it. Other then the maple floor and cedar siding, all the lumber for the interior/exterior trims, stairways, cabinetry and doors was purchased as rough boards then milled to shape by myself. Much of the wood was cut 80 yrs ago off a local farm and stored until I bought it.

Though I work as a woodworker my passion is sailing, something I have been doing on Northport Bay for 53 yrs. I like adventure sailing best and have completed the grueling 300 mile Everglades Challenge and have spent 19 days alone at sea on the North Atlantic in a 20' sailboat attempting a trans Atlantic crossing from NYC to Northern Spain. Tropical storm Debbie in 2012 delayed my progress until I ran out of time and was forced to return to NYC. Though New York harbor's Lower Bay and Florida's west coast/ Florida Bay have their beauty, nothing compares to sailing my home waters of Northern Lake Michigan.

Kevin R Sauvage purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Kevin R Sauvage chose Northern Michigan

Scrilly Cottage is inspired by the Bumble Bee word for "friend" in Taylon Thomas's poem "Scrilly".

Jewel box cottage in great location!

  • 5 of 5

The house is neat as a pin and very well made. I spoke with Kevin, the owner, and in addition to building the place himself, he did all the woodwork (cabinets, trim, doors!) using local wood that was harvested over 100 years ago and stored in an area barn. The house is beautiful inside, well lit and comfortable. The kitchen had plenty of pans and dishes for us to cook with, and the gas grill outside worked great and with no fuss. The cottage homeowners association has its own beach close by, but we preferred the Northport town beach which is a five minute drive away. The surrounding area has many farms and orchards and makes for very pleasant cycling. We'd go back in a minute.

Owner's Response: Wonderful guests are wonderful! When my grand kids come to visit they prefer going to the Northport village beach also so that's what we plan on.

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Scrilly Cottage, and we loved it as much as the first! It was the perfect home to come back to after a day of hiking, biking, or going to the beach. It's spotless and has everything you need to cook a nice meal. We're happy we chose this for our summer vacation!

Wonderful cottage in Northport! Our family loved the short walk to beach!

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved the cottage and how it sat back in a wooded area. The kids had so much fun exploring. The home was built by the owner, Kevin. Everything in the home was done by him...floors, doors, cabinets, etc. it was beautiful. He was available for any questions, and even helped us when we got locked out! It was truly our most relaxing vacation. The kids were asking to go back as we pulled out of the driveway.

Owner's Response: Scrilly Cottage is blessed to have such a wonderful family stay in her. It was music hearing the kids play in the woods with stick bow and arrows . Their observations and talks helped me solve a few issues with the cottage that have plagued me for some time. They even bought a new toaster for Scrilly, thanks! We love to have you back.

Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5

I am a tough critic and Scrilly Cottage met all of my expectations. First of all, it was clean. Second, the photos don't do this cottage justice. It is beautiful and bigger than it appears. It has an open floor plan with comfortable furnishings. The kitchen is well equipped and a grill is available for outdoor cooking. The location is ideal for a short walk to the water or a two mile bike trip to the lighthouse. Our kids loved having access to the owners' association recreational area. We had great weather but be prepared for a chilly dip in Grand Traverse Bay in early July! This was our family's first trip to the Leelanau Peninsula and it has a lot to offer if you prefer nature, beautiful views, great wine and a slower pace. I loved Scrilly Cottage so much, I didn't want to leave! Thanks, Kevin, for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!

We love Scrilly Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We were immediately impressed with the quality, construction and perfect touches of the cottage. Everything was clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The cottage is situated in a beautiful, quiet and private setting. We did not take advantage of the fire pit behind the house, but it looked great too. We spent evenings at the cottage playing Euchre next to the fire. It was great to meet the owner Kevin who is a down to earth guy who built the home from the ground up and paid close attention to detail. The four of us adored this place and we will stay here again! I highly recommend this home.

Great place to stay. Extremely nice house with a great layout both inside and out.

  • 5 of 5

I was very impressed with this house. 1st class construction and layout. Comfortable beds and everything was there for a stay including coffee with amenities, fire wood for the outstanding fire pit in the back yard, and a short walk to a private beach on Traverse bay. I was even able to wheel my kayak there for entry to the water. The owner is extremely nice and Checked in with us to verify if anything additional was needed. The location was also great as a hub for visiting the beautiful area and beaches of both Traverse bay and Lake Michigan.

Location

Just a 4 min walk to wonderful sand beach with picnic tables and fire pit. Tennis courts, children's playground, club house. Spectacular Cathead Bay beach, part of Leelanau State Park, is a 5 min drive and short walk through hardwood forests. The village of Northport with shopping, dining and municipal marina is 5 miles south.
