The cottage great room has a new stone fireplace, TV with VHS and CD/DVD/surround sound system. The dining room seats 10. The kitchen has been updated with a new floor, stove, washer and dryer, and microwave.
A catwalk over the water from the boathouse leads to the only permanent dock on the lake where you can tie up your boat, sunbathe, fish or swim. Stairs on either side of the boathouse lead to shallow water with a sandy bottom.
Two kayaks and one canoe are available for fishing and trips out to Nick Stoner Island. A sunfish sailboat is also available.
There is a fire pit behind the boathouse for sitting around the campfire and toasting marsh mellows. A flat grassy area in the back yard is great for badminton and volleyball. The patio has a picnic table, chairs and a gas grill.
A public boat ramp and a general store are just down the lake. Nick Stoner Golf Course is minutes away. Dancing and bands can be enjoyed at Pine Lake only 5 miles north. There are numerous mountain biking and hiking trails in the area including a trail to one of the last remaining fire towers in the Park on top of Kane Mtn. Wildlife - loons, turkey, fish, ducks abound. Spectacular fishing for bass, perch, and pickerel right off the dock!
The cottage is on Canada Lake in the south central part of the Adirondack Park 10 miles from Johnstown/Gloversville; an hour from Albany, Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame and Glimmerglass Opera House), and Saratoga (Race Track and Performing Arts Center).
Come stay at Under the Hemlocks where you can start your day with breakfast on the full porch overlooking the lake then either go for a hike in the mountains, cycle the wide shoulder of infrequently traveled Route 10 North through Arietta to Speculator, paddle to Nick Stoner Island and Lily Lake, or just lay in the sun on the dock. Whatever you do, be sure to spend some time in the crystal clear water of Canada Lake.
In the fall, enjoy the brilliant foliage, hike to the Kane Mt. fire tower for spectacular views and keep warm during the evenings by the stone fireplace.
My grandfather purchased the camp in 1947. My father and mother bought it from him in the 1960s and ran a boys summer camp there for several years (Ongowanda Lodge). I've been spending summers there since I was born.
