Set amidst beautiful countryside on a private country estate, a stay at Braeburn Cottage offers stunning views, endless rolling hills, a toasty fire and peace perfect peace. Recently renovated throughout, this pretty two bedroom cottage really is a place to do as little or as much as you would like.

The accommodation features a small cosy sitting room with wood burning stove for chilly days, a well equipped kitchen, and two bright sunny bedrooms offering comfortable accommodation for couples or families. The property adjoins Bramley Cottage for larger groups wishing to holiday together and sits in a private spot with a sunny courtyard to the rear and views over rolling hills from the doorstep.

The property sits on the Edgerston Estate just south of Jedburgh and its position will appeal to peaceful relaxers, walkers, cyclists and country sports enthusiasts who will be able to take full advantage of its position in acres of open countryside.

Dating right back to 1448, Edgerston has a rich history, playing a prominent part in Reiver skirmishes in early days and then notable literary connections with some of the most distinguished writers of the time including Sir Walter Scott, John Buchan and J M Barrie. Today it operates as a private shooting estate and working farm.

For larger parties, the property can be let in conjunction with Bramley Cottage (four bedroom) which combined can offer accommodation for 12 guests. Nearby Stotfield (three bedroom) can accommodate a further 5 guests. Please enquire for details.

Local amenities

Despite its rural position, Braeburn Cottage has good amenities close by and is incredibly well positioned for exploring attractions north and south of the border. The historic market town of Jedburgh with its magnificent 12th century abbey ruins, sits just 6 miles from the cottage where you will find a good selection of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and pubs as well as a leisure pool, fitness centre, small dry ski slope and 18 hole golf course.

Spend a cultural afternoon here and follow in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and William Wordsworth all of whom walked its ancient streets, or visit the 16th century bastel house of Mary Queen of Scots or the fascinating 1820 Castle Jail.

The main A.68 allows easy access to the picturesque towns across the area, including the city attractions of Edinburgh and Newcastle - just an hour’s drive each way.

Activities and attractions

For outdoor pursuits, pack a picnic and enjoy leisurely walking and cycling directly from the house through estate grounds and woodland. A lovely walk through the walled garden and over the field will take you towards the Loch and the hills beyond which provide breathtaking views of the area and plenty of rich wildlife spotting opportunities. Wellies are a good idea for any field walks, and children can enjoy a spot of paddling or a fun game of pooh stick on the nearby Kaim Water which runs through the estate.

For cycling, the Oxnam Cycle Route just a short distance from the property, a mostly low level trail with historical points along the way and one or two steep climbs where you will be rewarded with far-reaching views. There are a number of waymarked walking routes from Jedburgh, including the scenic Howden, Hunthill and Sandyhill Road which takes in a superb panoramic vista from the highest point near Belvidere Wood.

The Whitelee Moor National Nature Reserve sits 7 miles from the cottage, one of Britain’s most important upland reserves and home to birds of prey, including merlin, buzzard, peregrine falcon and hen harrier. Skylark, stonechat and meadow pipit are also common across the site, while otters often hunt along the Rede and wild goats can be seen on the border with Kielderhead.

The Kielder Water and Forest Park is an easy drive south (23 miles) and is home to the largest man-made lake in northern Europe. There is something for everyone here including water sports enthusiasts, cyclists, walkers, naturalists, artists, families and photographers. A highlight is the star gazing treat at the Kielder Observatory where you can view the outstanding dark skies of the Northumberland National Park using powerful telescopes and may be lucky enough to see passing comets or a stunning meteor shower.

Alternatively, a half-hour drive from the property will take you to Newcastleton, home to the outstanding 7Stanes mountain biking centre and Rock UK outdoor centre where you can experience a vast range of cycling trails, family adventure days, canoeing, climbing, zip rides, abseiling, walking and fishing.

For shooting, there are extensive options across the Scottish Borders, the nearest being Lothian Estates which sits in over 20,000 acres of rolling borders countryside. The mixed terrain and extensive size of the estate lends itself to many types of shooting with mini driven days, walked up shooting, as well as duck and goose flighting on various locations.

Accommodation

Compact sitting room with a large double sofa and armchair set around a cosy wood burning stove. There is a small dining table with seating for four and a wall mounted Freesat TV.

Well equipped galley kitchen with electric grill and oven, ceramic hob, toaster, integrated dishwasher, kettle, Nespresso coffee maker (pod type), and integrated fridge with ice compartment (no freezer). Please note that there is a two step drop from the living area to the kitchen. There is no washing machine in the property, however washing facilities are available in the building opposite the cottage - please refer to the note on 'Laundry Facilities' below.

The kitchen leads through to a rear hallway and ground floor shower room with wc, basin, heated towel rail and shaving point.

Bedroom 1 - to the left of the front door, there is a well presented ground floor bedroom with king size bed, chest of drawers and two bedside cabinets.

Bedroom 2 - stairs lead from the living room to a sunny first floor twin bedroom and features combed ceilings, crisp linens and pretty tweed accents. There is a storage area and hanging rail at the top of the stairwell.

Wi-Fi and mobile reception

The property benefits from free Wi-Fi but please note that this can be slow and occasionally intermittent. The mobile reception is patchy on most networks. A landline is provided for reasonable use by guests.

General estate information

Edgerston is a working farm and shooting estate and as such there will be farm and estate traffic around the grounds. During shooting season, on shoot days, walking in certain parts of the estate may be restricted. Please enquire if you have any concerns.

Parking

Parking is not permitted outside the cottages, unless for unloading purposes. There is a private parking area directly opposite the cottages which runs behind the laundry building, to the left of the walled garden.

Laundry Facilities

There are washing and drying facilities in the building opposite the cottages. This also serves as the estate laundry, therefore access may be restricted at certain times.

Privacy

Please note that the adjoining cottage (Bramley) may be used by the estate during the shooting season (November-January) for shoot days on the estate and as a result there may be associated movement of people in and around this area. Please contact us if you have any concerns.

Catering

The cottage can be taken on a purely self-catered basis, or part or fully catered options can be arranged including a homemade meals and wine delivery service, or a food hamper for the start of your stay.
