Quintessential Mountain Living in Mallorca
If you need 5-star accommodations, this is not for you.
BUT... if you want to feel like a LOCAL, you have a sense of ADVENTURE, and you are FLEXIBLE in your approach to vacation homes...then this is the perfect place for your family.
We really enjoyed our stay here! It was right around the corner from the main square with a little food shop, café, and bakery within a stones throw. All four of us had our own bed - 3 of them on the 3rd level and one of them snuggled in the corner of the living room. The kitchen and dining are on the 2nd floor, so that's where most of our limited time inside together was spent. It was a bit chilly - as it would be in most stone houses in the mountains of mallorca - but the gas heater and mobile electric heater helped. Once you get snuggled in the beds for the evening, though, all is warm and cozy for the night. When in Mallorca, one shouldn't be inside too much of the day, anyway!
Things to be flexible about:
The thumping on the other side of the wall every morning (we think it was the butcher at the back of the food shop around the corner), and the kids running footsteps house attached to another wall. One shouldn't be in bed too late anyway ;)
Things that were beyond our expectation:
We had a rental car, so it was the perfect point from which to explore the mountains, Palma, and the bays on the opposite side of the island.
The size was good. We were four, and were never crowded. The charm is exactly as shown in the photos. The neighborhood cats were friendly. The soft sound of the church bells every 15 min helped mark time once you figured out 1 ding for every 15 min. The rooftop seating area was a nice way to start the day and look up at this clouds skimming the top of the nearby mountains. And there are free oranges to be had everywhere! And the house has a juicer, so it was the perfect combo.
We highly recommend it - real living among real locals!
Great, arty house in a lovely village
The headline description of "big house in the centre..." is absolutely correct - the location is great, just yards from the square and probably no more than 2 or 3 minutes walk from any of the restaurants. It's also very close to the church bells which ring out for some time on Sunday morning, and what sounded like the bins being emptied for half an hour on Monday morning:).
What the headline doesn't say is how full of character the house is. If you like arty, quirky things, you'll love this house. It takes a while to get used to what room is on which floor.
We were out and about all the time so didn't have a chance to use the roof terrace (perhaps a bit late in the year and also the building next to us was being renovated!) but the views from there are absolutely stunning.
We hadn't planned to take a car but found that there was no public transport at the time we arrived, which was 6pm. It was cheaper to hire a car than to get taxis for the 44km trip both ways.
In the end, we were glad of the car, not least because we discovered the Miro foundation in Palma which, if you're a Miro fan, is just absolutely amazing! (Better than the one in Barcelona, for reasons you'll find out when you get there:) )
Old rustic house with charm
Perfect location for us with shops and restaurants within walking distance house was in need of a bit of updating but was clean and had charm portal not everyones taste but we loved it
Great place in beautiful village!
Very Nice place, with a Nice roomy terrace, with great view of the incredibly beautiful mountains! The noise from the street was not a problem at all! We were very pleased with the stay and the house all in all and we will definetly recommend this place to anybody who considers a stay in the beautiful Fornalutx!
Authentic cosy house with a few little draw backs
Our family of four (2 children, aged 4 and 7) had a lovely holiday week in this house. Things we loved: the old authentic charm of this place with stone walls and wooden beams. The location couldn't have been better, right in the heart of a beautiful village amongst the locals - just like we had wanted to find. Fornalutx, though small in size, has everything you need: a fab bakery (just opposite the house), a few good restaurants, a mini supermarket, a few cafe's, the mountains all around... gorgeous. Things we didn't love, or better I didn't - my husband and the kids didn't mind: the house is right on the main road where all the traffic goes past. It can get pretty loud sometimes. Also, there was a kind of thumping noise early in the mornings and also what we thought were machines of some kind going on and off day and night - so whoever is a bit noise intolerant, as I am, needs to take earplugs along. We assumed that this was probably the businesses nearby - the bakery, the butcher.
Other than that the house is wonderful and we would definitely go there again.
