About Fernando & Oonagh

We have been visiting Italy since our teens, including motor biking there for our honeymoon. Born in Northern Ireland, Fernando’s parents originally emigrated to Belfast in the 1940s with their roots lying in the Province of Lucca.

Fernando & Oonagh purchased this house in 2016

Why Fernando & Oonagh chose Villa Collemandina

We’ve enjoyed seeing many parts of Italy but have always loved the nature and mountains of Garfagnana - a stunning and unspoilt part of Tuscany. The area allows us easy access to the traditional tourist centres of Lucca, Pietrasanta and Viareggio, Pisa and Florence, to access the beach, cultural and retail activities. The appeal of the Garfagnana, however, lies in its tranquillity, lack of tourism and striking scenery. Here, those with busy lives can recover from the stresses of daily life and move at a slower pace, relaxing and taking in the beautiful landscapes and natural lifestyle of the local people. For those who want to see a piece of traditional Italy, it cannot be beaten. Like much of rural Italy, it has links through emigration to faraway places such as America and not so faraway such as Great Britain & Ireland, and especially to Scotland (re: Barga).

Our house is located in a hamlet, close to the centre of Garfagnana, which makes it ideal for exploring the region in its entirety, and beyond to the rest of Tuscany. The road infrastructure in Italy is very good and the house is easily accessible from Pisa and Bologna airports but also from Rome and Milan if you don’t mind a longer drive.

Lovely house in a wonderul location

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful 9 night stay at La Grinella. The house has everything you need and the views make it a wonderful place to get away from it all. We loved the pool as well as eating out on the terrace at night. There so many things to see in the area and there was easy access to shops if we needed. We hope to be back again in the near future.

For those who enjoy the outdoor life, the Parco Naturale dell’Orecchiella is found nearby on the slopes of the Apennines and is a must for all nature lovers, ideal for walking, hiking & trekking, horse riding, mountain biking and picnicking. It is dominated by forests of Fir, Beech and Chestnut trees. Deer, badgers, wild boar, golden eagles and the peregrine falcon reside here. There is a visitors centre and botanical garden to visit.

The wild nature of the Garfagnana perfectly lends itself to several adventure parks offering many activities for all age groups. There are three main adventure parks within easy reach offering a range of activities for both children and adults. The famous caves of “Grotta del Vento” not too far away (45 mins).

There are several beautiful villages and towns to explore in the immediate vicinity, such as Corfino, Sassorosso and Castiglione di Garfagnana. They all offer spectacular views but each one has its own particular character and charm, and many of the towns have celebrations and festivals throughout the year. Larger towns and cities well worth visiting are:

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (15 mins) which is the main town at heart of the Garfagnana. Not to be missed is the weekly traditional market that takes place every Thursday morning.

Barga (25 mins), a beautiful mediaeval town with its cobbled streets, cathedral and impressive panoramic views. Barga is famous for its art and music and here you can often enjoy free music, evening markets, and dancing, with plenty of places to eat well.

Lucca (60 mins), the capital of the region with its surrounding walls which is a lovely place to walk, cycle or have a picnic. At the day’s end, historic cafes and restaurants tempt visitors to relax over a glass or two of Lucchesi wine and rustic dishes prepared with fresh produce from nearby Garfagnana.

Pisa (75 mins) which is known for its Leaning Tower. The centre of town has a vibrant cafe and bar scene with a lively street life - a charm you will definitely not discover if you restrict your visit to the Piazza dei Miracoli.

The coast at Versilia is just over a one hour drive to the west, with easy access to beautiful beaches at places such as Forte dei Marmi, Marina di Pietrasanta and Viareggio.

To summarise, La Grinella is situated in a very tranquil location, and well placed to explore, not only the local Garfagnana region itself, but also the whole of the Province of Lucca and beyond - its mountains & coast, towns & cities, markets & shops.
