About the property

3-bedroom cottage close to beach with excellent onsite leisure facilities

Located in the beautiful North Devon countryside is Shippen Cottage, a lovely three-bedroom barn conversion accommodating up to four. The cottage, which is at Wheel Farm near Combe Martin is the ideal family and dog friendly property with excellent onsite shared leisure facilities, including an indoor heated swimming pool with sauna, a tennis court, a children's play area and a dog walking/exercise field.

The Shippen is slightly tucked away from the other cottages with its own private entrance, and only a short walk from the dog walking field.

On the ground floor of the cottage is a lovely comfy lounge, which has large sofas, a TV with DVD player and a wonderful wood-burning stove. A small step leads from the lounge in to the well-equipped kitchen/diner, which has everything you will need, including an electric oven with hob, a dishwasher, a microwave, a fridge and a country pine table, which seats up to four. If needed there is an onsite laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer.

The three bedrooms are all located on the first floor of the cottage and include a double and two pretty singles. There is also a family bathroom with a shower over the bath, a wash-basin and a WC.

Outside as well as the onsite leisure facilities there are extensive grounds with landscaped gardens and woods for guests to roam; picnic tables are positioned around the grounds for guests to use.

Wheel Farm is situated just a few miles from the North Devon coast and the amazing sandy beaches at Woolacombe Bay and Putsborough. These beaches offer safe bathing and great surfing; Woolacombe was voted best beach in the UK in 2016 and remains one of the favourites amongst guests staying at Wheel Farm. An alternative smaller beach, which is less than two miles away is Combe Martin, where children will love playing in the rock pools, a few water-sports are also on offer here, including sea-kayaking.

For shops and restaurants, Combe Martin has a few places to eat, but a wider range to suit all tastes can be found in the harbour town of Ilfracombe, which is less than 10 minutes away.

Local family attractions, include the Combe Martin Dinosaur and Wildlife Park and Exmoor Zoo, which can be found just down the road.

If you fancy a break from the beach, Exmoor is on your doorstep, roam the wilds of the moors, or enjoy a cream tea in one of the many wonderful pubs and tea rooms.

Please note The Shippen is one of 11 cottages at Wheel Farm, it can be booked either on its own or in conjunction with one or more of the other properties.

First family holiday with 6month old!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Shippen Cottage for our first week away with our 6 month old little boy. The cottage is simple and cosy with everything we needed including the log burner that made staying in on rainy days worthwhile! When the sun shone the cottages are a great location to reach some stunning coastal and beach walks nearby that Amanda gave us loads of information about to help decide where to visit. Great facilities on site too with the pool and grounds, which I'm sure come into their own more in Summer. Thanks for a great week, we would recommend to anyone.

Other Activities:

Other activities available locally include golf, with courses found at Ilfracombe and Saunton. Horse riding can be enjoyed at a number of nearby stables and for more experienced riders, beach rides can be made available. It is however, water-sports that North Devon is more renowned for with surfing a highlight for many visitors and several beaches will offer surfing lessons to suit all abilities. Other water-sports include kayaking, jet-skiing and wind-surfing.

Shippen Cottage is one of eleven cottages at Wheel Farm set in a pretty countryside location, just outside the North Devon village of Combe Martin.

The seaside village has a good choice of cafes, restaurants, pubs, fish and chip shops and gift shops. There is also a fabulous family friendly beach, which is great for rock pooling and a few water-sports, including sea kayaking. If you are lucky and visit at the right time of the year, you may also see some of the rescued sea lions returned to the ocean from the beach.

The Victorian seaside town of Ilfracombe is just a 10 minute drive away. It has a fabulous choice of restaurants, seaside gift shops and art galleries; it is also home to Damien Hirst's 'Verity' a bronze clad sculpture that overlooks the harbour. From Ilfracombe guests can set off on a sea safari around the coastline, or head to Lundy, the largest island in the Bristol Channel and a Site of Scientific Interest. Ilfracombe also has its own theatre, cinema and award-winning aquarium. Families may also wish to discover the beach of The Tunnels, where there is a cafe with soft play area and a tidal pool.

A little further along the coast, visitors will find the beautiful golden beach of Woolacombe, which is a firm favourite amongst guests. This blue flag beach is patrolled by life guards from Easter through to the end of the October half-term and is a great place for all ages. For water-sport enthusiasts surfing is available at the beach with lessons also provided. Other nearby beaches include Croyde and Saunton Sands.

If you would prefer to head inland for the day, Exmoor National Park is less than a 30-minute drive and the perfect place to stop and enjoy a cream tea with several tea rooms dotted around. At Lynton and Lynmouth Exmoor meets the sea and guests can travel in style between the two villages with the use of the water-powered cliff railway.

If you are looking for nearby attractions you won't be disappointed, just a few miles away is Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, and Watermouth Castle. Also, nearby is Exmoor Zoo, Arlington Court and Quince Honey Farm. Many of the attractions will offer discounts if booked in advance, so it is well worth planning ahead.
