Recharge in our 'off the grid' cabin. Live by firelight and rainwater with your own spot of Adirondack waterfront perfection. Grab a breath of fresh air amidst the fast-paced technology-centered routine of everyday life.
The one room cabin easily sleeps four people with a full futon located on the ground floor and a full size air mattress in the loft. Renters bring their sleeping bag and sheets. A covered porch affords a bird’s eye view of the water and feels as if sitting in the treetops. The cabin has no electricity or running water and is equipped with battery and solar powered lanterns, solar outdoor lighting, two 5-gallon jugs of potable water, a propane cooktop for morning coffee and eggs and a gas grill for deck cooking. We provide the propane, pots and pans, dinnerware, and other kitchen utensils. The outhouse is just a few steps away.
Our cabin is located on the Soft Maple Reservoir mid-way on the 14-mile Beaver River Canoe Route and thirteen miles from the village of Croghan. The Croghan tract is one of the more remote areas of the Adirondack Park with a long tradition of hunting, fishing and trapping. The Reservoir is comprised of two connected lakes, with waters ideal for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and water sports. In the small town of Croghan you can get gas, bait, ice and groceries. Visit the Croghan Meat Market, the Maple Museum, Monnat’s Country Store, the Croghan Candy Kitchen, or stop at Good Ol’ Wishy’s soda fountain for a root beer float. Leave your expectations home. Bring only what you need and marvel in the beauty that surrounds you.
Rental available summer months only as there is no interior heat source.
My roots go deep in the area. My father's people farmed the Beaver River area beginning in the late 1800s. My mother's father worked as a fishing and hunting guide and her mother as a cook for the Stillwater Hotel. I work with local schools providing technical support for education software. Both my son and daughter live and work in Buffalo now.
Kay Fortenbery purchased this cabin in 2012
We looked for several years before purchasing this property. I wanted a place where my kids could always come home to that is part of who they are. We hoped for water front but with some elbow room. Soft Maple is perfect and I couldn't be happier with the "lack" of electricity and TV and wifi and phones... There is no where else that I feel so calm and so grateful.
This is our second year renting. The hope is to help off set some of the cost of owning and continue making upgrades on the camp and property. There is no intent to get rich rather it feels wonderful to share the experience that has brought us such joy.
A nice get away. Enjoyed our time there. Just the kind of place to get away from it all and just chill. We enjoyed the use of the canoe and went on an awesome hike to a waterfall. Our dog had a great time too. The only thing that was a bit challenging is the terrain around the cabin and down to the lake. The driveway was also tricky to get up, maybe not if you have a four wheel drive. A few more lanterns would be nice also.
We stayed here for 3 nights for our honeymoon and had a great time. Kay met us in time and showed up to the property, stopping along the way to show us trails that came off old logging roads. We took the canoe out everyday fishing and to watch the sunset. Cabin has everything you will need for cooking and there are plenty of chairs for campfires and relaxing. If you get stuck inside there are plenty of books and games to play! We liked the waterside fire pit the best (1 of 3 fire pits!) and enjoyed stargazing. Do your research before visiting if you want to do any serious hiking as trails are not well marked and there is no cell service.
My mother and grandfather built this cabin together. Its where my parents spent there first night as husband and wife. I grew up coming to this little hidden treasure! Nice to fall asleep to the bull frogs in the lake. Making s'mores out on the deck and the wonderful lights only from candles inside! It was a sad moment when the family had to sell the camp. Too Bad we lost the opportunity camp there this summer... everything happens for a reason! Thanks Kay for reminding me of that!
My husband and I (and our mini dachshund) stayed for our wedding anniversary and had a fantastic time. The cabin is quaint and cozy and the water was absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed swimming and made great use of the canoe. The reservoir is busy with boat traffic and Jet Skis, and that was probably the only draw back. Saturday was particularly noisy. However, in the quiet times it was absolutely beautiful. Particularly sitting at the camp fire by the water in the evenings. The star gazing is out of this world! ;)
Our group and my dog stayed a week at Kay's beautiful little piece of property! The whole place exceeded our expectations - from the waterfront to the newly installed outdoor shower. Kay was fantastic and went out of her way to be sure we arrived safely and had a perfect vacation.
As backcountry campers, we were "spoiled" by such a well stocked cabin. Everything you need is there so packing is a breeze. The back "cooking" deck was another unexpected surprise. Oh...and three different fire pits? Sure! We were partial to the pit at the water. The south facing dock also saw a lot of use from us!
We brought our kayaks but also used the on site canoe. The reservoir is large with lots of coves and hidden areas to explore. There are motorized boats all over the reservoir so don't expect a quiet paddle. Jet Skis and pontoon boats were always present.
We took a few quick trips into Croghan but otherwise were fully occupied with swimming, paddling, and just relaxing at the property.
This place just earned a spot on our vacation circuit!
My husband and I stayed here with our small dog and absolutely loved it. We both enjoy backpacking, camping and canoeing and this trip allowed us to enjoy the best of all of those activities.
The host was fantastic and met us in town to take us to the cottage (otherwise we probably would have gotten lost) and she had a cute welcome gift of some Maple Syrup and Pancake Mix that brought us back to when we use to live in Canada.
Having the canoe was the real selling point for us since we were able to lesiurely take it out on the water, but had a fully stocked cottage to return to. The firepit down by the water was great and there was a ton of wood provided around the property for us to use.
It definitely isn't a cottage for someone who is looking to have all the amenities but for anyone that enjoys camping and the outdoors you couldn't ask for a better setup.
It was a bit of a drive from NYC but definitely worth and we wouldn't hesitate to come back again!
