About Sophia Randall
Hello, we are Mike & Sophia Randall and we would like to welcome you to Lower Willsworthy Cottage. We pride ourselves on providing a luxury, friendly escape in the country – a place of beauty and peace, away from it all. Whether relaxing by your own stretch of river, or strolling on Dartmoor National Park, there’s an activity for everyone. That's why our guests come back year after year!
Sophia Randall purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Sophia Randall chose Tavistock
Location, location, location! Only holiday cottage on site. Stunning Dartmoor location. Recommended by BBC Countryfile magazine & Barbour Clothing.
What makes this Cottage unique
Only holiday cottage on site, fantastic views, great walks, secluded gardens with stream, river, fishing, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and falconry. We can accommodate up to 3 dogs in our guest kennels. Dogs are not allowed in the cottage which means that the cottage is suitable for allergy sufferers and people that don't like that wet dog smell! The kennels are purely for guest use.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
An amazing stay - peaceful, beautiful location.
We have just returned from another fantastic stay at Sophia and Mike's farm cottage. The house is immaculately clean, and everything works perfectly in the cottage.
The location, adjacent to Dartmoor is great, as we were able to get straight up into the high areas for walking with panoramic views. Our daughters loved horse riding at Cholwell riding stables, which is 10 minutes away. Also, there are plenty of great pubs within a 10 minute drive of the property.
The highlight for our daughters was a chance to get one to one horseback coaching with Sophia in the covered paddock on the property. She was amazing with our girls.
The outside space of the property is stunning with fields, a stream and farm animals, perfect for an evening stroll. It's quiet and peaceful, so along with the good quality beds and bedding, we slept really well. The kitchen has everything you could need, and the living areas are modern, comfortable, and spacious.
Finally, Sophia and Mike are perfect hosts. They are available if you need them, and always friendly and cheerful.
If you are considering renting this property.... you should really do it and we are planning to return for our summer holiday next year!
A peaceful and relaxing setting
Lower Willsworthy Barn is in a beautiful and very quiet setting. We had a warm welcome from Mike and Sophie, the owners, and enjoyed the cake and eggs that they had left us. We had access to the whole of the farm, including a secluded private picnic spot and a stretch of river for swimming (bracing, but fun). There is walking from the door with a variety of habitats - open Moorland, river, woodland and farmland. The property is in easy reach of excellent shopping in Tavistock - don't miss the cheese shop - and fantastic food at the Peter Tavy Inn. The property was clean and comfortable. We hope to return soon to recharge our batteries again.
Wonderful cottage on the edge of Dartmoor, with great views, lovely hosts
We spent 8 days at Lower Willsworthy, and had a grand time. The cottage is spotless and very comfortable, with everything one could want and all in working order. There are fine views of Dartmoor and it's an easy walk to the edge of the moor itself. We really enjoyed watching the parade of horses, ducks, chickens and Canada geese going past our windows. Sophie and Mike, the owners, are exceptionally friendly and helpful, and it was a real pleasure to talk with them. Tavistock is a neat town to wander around in; we spent a lot of time in the market and the town museum. On Mike's recommendation, we had lunch at the Peter Tavy Inn (3-4 miles away) one day; it was excellent.
This is one of the nicest places we've stayed at in our five recent summers in England; we would love to come back.
Perfect cottage for our nice week in Dartmoor.
The cottage is very well equipped and if good standard. Sophie and Mike are friendly and helpful. Good location with lots of outdoor activities for the whole family. Highly recommend
Lovely place to stay, wonderful walking in the moor !
Comfortable, great views and lovely people.
Winter short break on Dartmoor
Firstly, thanks to the owners, Mike & Sophia, for friendly and efficient communication while booking our stay. When we arrived, Sophia was there to meet us and welcomed us warmly before showing us around the grounds and cottage. The cottage is next to their house with a great outlook over the fields and moors but doesn't feel overlooked. Sophia assured us that if there was anything we needed, just to knock on their door.
Inside the cottage, the most delicious scones plus jam and clotted cream awaited us, plus eggs from their hens. A comprehensive information pack including walking maps, local restaurants/pubs and other local information was really helpful.
The cottage is warm, clean and spacious, with comfortable beds, great views and a cosy lounge complete with wood burner (ideal for curling up with a book after a snowy walk!) The ducks and hens in the yard below kept us entertained while doing the washing up!
We loved the walk up onto the moors from the cottage - a real mix of beautiful wooded river walks, ancient fields and open moorland. We walked to Gnat Tor and Baggator, and also enjoyed walks further afield at Grenofen and Burrator.
Food-wise, we had a wonderful lunch at the Cornish Arms in Tavistock - definitely recommended.
Thanks again to Mike & Sophia for creating such a lovely peaceful place. Look forward to coming back in warmer weather as the outside areas looked amazing.
Guests can enjoy Clay shooting and falconry which can be arranged on site (subject to extra charge). For our younger guests pony rides can be arranged and there is Jerry our Shetland pony who loves to be groomed! For those wanting to explore Dartmoor on horse back , there is a trekking centre 5 minutes away. There are plenty of Natural Trust attractions nearby, such as Lydford Gorge & Castle Drogo. Guests can enjoy many lovely walks on Dartmoor straight from the property. There are plenty of country pubs nearby serving local ales and great food. Tavistock is an award winning market town and boasts a wide variety of cafes and shops. There is also an indoor market. Plymouth is the nearest city with its historic Barbican, offering superb restaurants and pubs as well as a multiplex cinema, a 10 pin bowling venue, a theatre and the Natural Marine Aquarium.
The cottage is within easy reach of some stunning beaches on the north and south coasts of Devon & Cornwall.
For the adrenaline seekers, there is mountain biking, rock climbing, tree surfing and kayaking all nearby.
