"Let's stay at the Taylor House from now on"
It is my pleasure to give the first review of the Taylor House post-hurricane. I highly recommend. Rent with confidence.
I have been coming to St. John for 40+ years and have stayed all over the island. Although we honestly started to look for a less impacted island in the Caribbean for our trip this year, my family all wanted to return to support St. John. So, I started searching for homes that were in good condition after the storm and that led me to the Taylor House in Lower Peter Bay. This house is built like a tank, a beautiful tank. The damage they received was cosmetic and was fixed long before we arrived.
The Taylor House is gorgeous, inside and out. There are 4 large bedrooms in a row on the second floor. Perfect for families or couples. It is almost difficult to say which one is the master bedroom as they are all very nice, all have beautiful bathrooms, and all have incredible views looking out over Peter Bay. Everything in the house is topnotch. It is ridiculous (in a very good way) for a rental to have a Kalamazoo grill. The kitchen is first-rate and the common areas strike the right balance of island casual and elegance. It is clear that the owner put a lot of thought into this house and appointed it without cutting corners. The pictures don’t do this house justice.
For those less familiar with the island, Peter Bay is conveniently located on the north shore. Most of the nicer beaches are on the north shore and are very close. Or, just walk down the path to beautiful Peter Bay-- walking to a nice sandy beach from your house on St. John is rare. Cruz Bay is not too bad of a drive to run into town for dinner.
As for the state of the island, St. John is back. Almost all of the restaurants I wanted to visit are open for business now. We had zero issues with power (but the house has a backup generator anyway). The beaches are beautiful. The island is green again. Of course, there are a few areas on the island that still display the power of the hurricane and will take more time to heal, but that should be expected. Everywhere we went, people genuinely thanked us for returning to support the island and it is easy to feel the even greater sense of community.
We have stayed at many beautiful homes around St. John. But, on the last night of this trip, my wife said “Let’s stay at the Taylor House from now on.”
I am writing this review with the painful knowledge that we were the last guests to stay at the property before hurricane Irma struck. My heart breaks for the island that has become such a special place for my family over the past ten years. Taylor House did not sustain damage in the storm, so I do believe my review of our stay will be applicable for future guests. This is a very special home and a lot of time and effort has been spent in planning and maintenance. The floor plan was extremely functional with well thought out gathering spaces and no awkward unused areas. The outdoor spaces were comfortable and beautiful. The heated pool was used daily, and this was a first for us because pools on St John tend to be too cold to use. Every detail in the home has been thoroughly thought out. They have an AED as well as a well stocked First Aid kit. I have not seen either item in any other rental home we have used. The kitchen is extremely well stocked. We brought some spices with us, which turned out to be unnecessary. The owner has spices shipped in, and as a result, the spice cabinet is extensive. The kitchen, overall, is a cook's dream! They even have a bread machine, if you are so inclined. I cannot say enough good things about this home. Taylor House feels as though you are in someone's very comfortable home. It does not feel at all like a typical vacation rental. The high end finishes and owners' attention to detail, really do come together to create an outstanding home.
Perfect home on a perfect island
Vrbo pics don't do justice to the view, property manager, house keeper, and owner were all awesome. We didn't experience any issues like previous occupants and will definitely recommend this place to friends
Great property! Already booked again
After a long day of delayed travel we finally arrived after dark in St. John. The house manager "Marcus" met us at the dock and had transportation all lined up to take us to the house. The house was perfect, clean, and beautiful. Even better in person than the pictures show! The bedroom arrangement was perfect for our family of 3 small children. The kids really enjoyed the heated pool and the short trip to cinnamon bay. Overall we had a great week and Marcus was a huge help. He helped out with any special requests we had including finding a few large live lobsters for us to grill for dinner. He even cooked for us and occasionally stopped by with breakfast to check on us. We enjoyed our stay enough to have already booked a trip again in early January next year. I highly recommend renting this property
Poor, Poor Management! Would not return or recommend this house!
Rented this house 5 1/2 months before our June 25-July 1, 2017 vacation. Corresponded with the owner up until 3 DAYS before our arrival date.
Problems from the minute we landed in St. Thomas. Manager mixed up our week and wasn't prepared for us. Owner stated that manager should have had us on his calendar!
House was dirty and a LONG list of broken things. After a long day of traveling, this is what we had to deal with on our first evening: a house that was 85 degrees due to AC being put on late, washer and dryer full of towels left by housekeeping used by previous guests. Not a pretty picture folding towels in 85 degrees at 10 o'clock at night that you didn't dirty on your first night at a premium property that you have paid a premium price to rent for the week. At this point, you realize, you may have made a mistake. Dishwasher full of dishes. Kitchen cabinet missing a pin- wouldn t close. Manager "borrowed" a pin from armoire cabinet door in first bedroom- cabinet door on armoire was left on floor.
Internet in house not working, no baby bed set up as per request, sticks with thorns all over the patio, pool heater broken, discovered on our last night that there when we went to print our boarding passes that the printer was out of ink, dishwasher bottom rack broken, GFI outlets in second bedroom bathroom inoperable, laundry door latch taped with scotch tape since lock was stuck( tape failed and we had to shimmy door open with a credit card) 2 rolls of toilet tissue in house from day 1, no cushions on outdoor furniture until we called the owner to look into it, at least 20 plus light bulbs burnt, 2 ceiling fans not working, internet not working and two scorpions in the house
Managers response when I complained to him was, "DON'T COMPLAIN TO ME, HONEY"
Didn't respond when I asked him who I should complain to. Manager is rude, insulting, horrible attitude and walked right past us when we told him Hello or Good Morning.
Since the manager doesn't do his job, the owner wants you to report problems to him. And then to call him if the problem is not resolved. Numerous problems here-you will spend most of your time on the phone working for the owner.
Would NOT recommend this property to anyone!! Booked this house on previous reviews-not sure what's going on there, but wanted to be honest with anyone else looking to book this property. Would love to have gone into more details on this house but would not have fit into required space limitations
We could not have been more happy when this guest left. We have had two years of outstanding reviews and happy renters. We also have had many repeat customers. The property manager, and maid have been consistently well liked by previous guests and well reviewed.
Both the property manager and the maid had miserable experiences with this guest. They don’t follow the simplest instructions, like calling 24 hours in advance of arrival, and are extremely unpleasant. Between the sand, dirty diapers, and broken plates, they left the house a mess. The house is in excellent condition.
Absolutely magical. The view, location and house are all first class but this would be expected in the Peter Bay area. Let's talk about a few extra special things that should sway you toward the Taylor house. 1. The little details, like the french linens and exquisite towels. Pure luxury. 2. The house configuration. The bedrooms are all together on the second floor and the house encourages togetherness. 3. Marcus. He is the house manager. He met us at the dock, gave us a tour and checked on us throughout the week.
