About the property

Chart Cottage provides self catering accommodation for up to six people in the heart of the picturesque Devon village of Beer less than 10 minutes level walk from the beach. Beer was a runner-up in the 2018 Channel 4 Village of the Year.

Chart Cottage was built at the start of Queen Victoria's reign in the 1830's as the headmasters accommodation of the village school. It is now owned by the Rattenbury family who are direct descendants of the famous Beer smuggler, Jack Rattenbury.

Chart Cottage has three double bedrooms, all of which have luxurious en–suites, and an open plan lounge/dining room which has been sympathetically renovated in keeping with a beamed ceiling and stone inglenook fireplace.

The spacious kitchen, installed in 2016, includes gas stove, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine to make the cottage enjoyable self-catering holiday accommodation.

Free Wi- Fi is available.

Free Off–street parking for one car 35 yards away and additional free parking for a second car 150 yards away with our car parking permit.

There is a sunny courtyard out front with table and seating for 6.

About Jan Sargent

We spread our time between NZ Australia and the UK. David is a Brit and Sandra a Kiwi. Chart cottage is the link our daughters have with their fathers homeland. Our good friends Jan and Chris Sargent who live near Beer manage the property for us.

Lovely, well appointed cottage in the idyllic village of Beer

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was just what we needed for our stay, there were six of us - plenty of room and everything we could have needed. However, it was very dusty and it felt like it had only been very hastily cleaned. Our en-suite had rubbish in the bin and the carpet definitely had not been vacuumed in the bedroom, such a shame. It did not spoil our weekend though, but I would urge the owners to check before their next visitors.

Fabulously maintained and well equipped cottage, with very thoughtful owners. In a great spot within walking distance of all amenities and beach. Absolutely recommended and will return again.

High Peak

Very well appointed 3 en-suite bedroom cottage in the pretty village of Beer.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is located just up the road from the centre of beer village and has a reserved parking space 30m along the road and another space available at a nearby car park. The cottage is well appointed and was very clean on arrival. Nice touch to have milk in the fridge and local biscuits. Downstairs has a lounge and a nice new well-equipped kitchen with a downstairs loo. First floor has a double and a twin bedroom, both en suite. Second floor has a nice double with ensuite. Outside space is limited, there is a nice paved area at the front with a table and 4 chairs. WiFi was good. The village of Beer has a nice feel to it, with a pebble beach and a good range of small shops and restaurants. The SW Coast path is interesting in this area due to the significance and variety of the Jurassic Coast.

I would recommend this cottage highly. It made a short break very relaxing. It is a great place to come home to after a day out along this most intriguing coast. We would book Chart Cottage again.
