Attention: This is an Alaskan wilderness experience, accessible by boat only. The cabin is very comfortable with most comforts of home, including hot and cold running water. However special consideration should be given to how prepared you are to be a short skiff ride from town and conventional services, including emergency services, and with not having all the perks of flush toilets, unlimited electrical power, and internet access. A cell phone signal booster is provided, but ATT and other providers may have very spotty coverage. Verizon and its affiliates have good coverage. Please check with your cell provider. There is limited Internet WiFi upon request by prearrangement.

Note: Guests will assume full responsibility for judging their fitness, health concerns and ability with mobility to enter and exit a skiff on the beach, walking a moderate distance on a soft uneven surface during low tides, including inherent risks associated with the length of time for emergency response to medical issues. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the owner. Appropriate foot wear required.

This is a one of a kind hand built timber frame cabin, lovingly built by its owners. Italian ceramic tile floors, covered porch, covered back entry, leather furniture, wool rugs, fine craftsman details. Spacious loft with dormer. Wood frames held together with wood pegs with traditional craftsmanship. The owners are long time and life long Alaskans, and love to share the blessings of our "Heaven on Earth" with others. Cabin is substantially complete with essentials like hot and cold running water,, hot shower, hot running water in vanity, laundry, and an indoor porta-potty to avoid night time runs to outhouse. This is an off grid wilderness "eco" cabin, with sufficient 110v Solar power for very small appliances, USB port for cell phones, a cell phone signal booster, and LED lights. (sorry, no hair dryers, curling irons or other heavy draw appliances) The cabin is heated with wood (provided) and a marine type oil heater. The cabin is hard wired for a future "conventional" power source, but it is not hot at this time. (phaze II) The fridge and hot water is run from propane, provided by the owner. Minor improvements are consistently being made to refine the experience. Comfort items like clean towels, fresh clean linens, paper products, etc are all provided. Cooking essentials provided, including an outdoor gas grill, range with an oven, pots, pans, utensils, basic spices, oil etc. Please be prepared with your food essentials, from Anchorage or Homer. Basic cooking needs like cooling oil, spices, condiments etc provided. The owners are cooks, so the kitchen is well stocked with what pots, pans and basics you need to get it done. Seldovia has a small but somewhat expensive store for those forgotten items, or ask the owners and we are happy to help. It is highly recommended that you bring food from Anchorage or Soldotna for the best prices, Homer and Seldovia are incrementally more expensive.

Seldovia Bay is an amazing habitat, from shoreline to mountain top. Seldovia Bay Adventures offers what you need to have a trip of a lifetime. Whether charter boat fishing for a "barn door" halibut, Kayak fishing Seldovia Slough for King Salmon, Kayak or skiff fishing for Pink salmon in Seldovia Bay, Mountain Biking above the treeline in the alpine or exploring Seldovia Bay by outboard skiff, we can help. Or, simply enjoying a relaxed time in paradise on the large covered deck, cooking your catch of the day on our gas fired grill. We have the equipment and comfortable shelter you need to have a great time.

We rent our skiff, fishing Kayaks, Mountain Bikes, and can arrange for world class fishing charters. Our rental rates are very competitive.

We can arrange a combo transport across the bay, either by air with Smokey Bay Air, or by sea with Mako Water Taxi from Homer to Seldovia Harbor or airport and offer a complementary shuttle across Seldovia Bay, a protected bay, to the beach front property. You can also catch one of three daily day passenger ferries from Homer to Seldovia. Transportation from Homer to Seldovia Harbor is not included. Complimentary shuttle from Seldovia Harbor to Lodge provided by Seldovia Bay Adventures. On site owner/manager will gladly shuttle you to and from Seldovia to the cabin as needed by guests at no charge. (Gas donations appreciated for extra trips)

About Scott Ogan

Scott and Janet Ogan are long time and life time Alaskans. Scott is a retired Natural Resource Manager for the State of Alaska. Scott has been an Alaskan outdoorsman, hunter and sport fisherman for the last 40 years in Alaska. Scott is now in the environmental services business. Janet has the gift of hospitality, and works as a Legislative Aid. Scott and Janet got engaged on a beach in Cook Inlet 37 years ago, and have been on the water ever since. Janet is a former biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Scott Ogan purchased this chalet in 2005

Why Scott Ogan chose Kenai Peninsula

Best value vacation rental on Kachamak Bay. If you are looking for the most comfortable, remote feeling, yet close to trandportation cabin in the Kachemak Bay area you have found it. This property belonged to a family that lived there for three generations. They had their pick of the best spot on Seldovia bay back in the 1940's and the locals tell us we do indeed have the "best" spot on the bay. (we think so, and we think you will agree). It has a delightful small stream that cascades over a waterfall above the property and provides abundant fresh water. The property is in a protected cove and the salmon and halibut fishing is not far away. Fishing charters can be arranged by the owners. Scott will provide free shuttles to and from Seldovia when needed. (gas donations for extra trips appreciated) Restaurants, bar, library, groceries, as well as medical services is all available only10 skiff minutes away. No worries about being stranded. Scott stays in the old cabin on the property. You will have as much privacy as you want and assistance when you need it.

What makes this chalet unique

A private beach with a secluded wilderness experience yet only 1.75 miles by water from the quaint village of Seldovia. Seldovia is a friendly, historic fishing town who's working waterfront was dramatically change after the 1964 earthquake. Transportation is easily arranged and the hosts will guide you through the options. The area is sometimes frequented by black bears, although sightings are not common. This is a special place to decompress and get closer to the Creator.

Note: while there is excellent running water in the cabin, including a kitchen sink, vanity sink and hot shower, there is an outhouse. Porta potty provided to avoid those trips outside at night.

Stunning scenery, a birders heaven

  • 5 of 5

Scott was an incredible host from the moment we arrived off the ferry to the final departure he was informative about the area, the wildlife, and every detail we needed to enjoy and be safe during our stay. The cabin is incredibly roomy and hosted the 5 of us adults and two small children very well. When we arrived on shore we could hear the pair of nesting eagles just a few trees away from the sitting area at the front of the cabin. The best part was seeing the last eagle fledge! There was also a small flock of stellers jays that would perch on the balcony while I had my morning coffee! When the tide was low we enjoyed beach walks, and during the day we used the pair of kayaks that were on the property.....the water was so blue, we enjoyed seeing the sea otters, the jelly fish and all of the gulls and eagles that flew by or were on the shore. The night time brought beautiful views of the moon over the water and even a bonfire on the beach! We had everything we needed in the cottage, beds, linens, kitchen supplies for cooking etc. I would like to say how incredibly safe we felt while we were there considering how remote these locations are....Scott is an incredible craftsman and outdoors-men prepared for many things if they were to arise. I would beware of places that just drop you off in areas that are so desolate and dont check in to see if your ok!

Owner's Response: Thanks Kristy, I'm glad you enjoyed watching my eaglet fledge. I feel a special bond with the eagle family, as we live in the same neighborhood all summer. Watching momma dive for salmon then swimming to shore with her wings is always a treat. They come back to the same nest each year. I am also glad you felt secure while staying here. I stay in the cabin nest door when I have guests so folks do not have to worry if they need something.

Amazing! Spectacular scenery, beautiful, homey, original A frame cabin.

  • 5 of 5

What a hidden treasure! Scott's A-frame cabin is amazing. The location will leave you breathless! The beach leading to the cabin is most spectacular, then you walk up to the most incredible cabin! Our family of 5 (3 kids aged 5,8,10) loved the cabin and surrounding area. There was plenty of room for us all, Scott was incredibly helpful, and friendly. The views from the cabin were amazing- ocean, mountains, otters, eagles, young eagles in a nest and a black bear!

Scott was incredibly helpful at shuffling us from our boat to the cabin and back repeatedly. His fishing tips proved to be bang on, as we had a successful fishing day! He even took us on a tour of Seldovia and to an artists cottage a short boat ride away.

Each evening we happily returned to the cabin to sit on the fantastic covered deck and enjoy the views. We later went inside to play board games and relax by the wood stove. We all had 3 full nights of the best sleeps, comfortable, quiet and the best smelling ocean air.

We were all sad to leave, but already looking forward to our next stay!

Thank you Scott! See you next summer!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind remarks. I'm glad people with boats are discovering our little slice of paradise. You lovely family was a joy to have as guests. You were very considerate guests, left the place looking great and even left me some great food you did not want to pack back to Anchorage. The lone eaglet is still in the nest, and its other two siblings are still getting fishing lessons from their mom. After you left I was sitting in my boat reflecting on the beautiful still morning on the bay, when I heard a splash and the eagle had dove into the water and caught a salmon. She swam to shore with the fighting fish and devoured the still flopping fish within a few yards from me. Thank you referring your friends as well. That is the best complement I can get. See you next year.

A place to relax

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent the weekend here before two of our daughters left for college. We enjoyed the secluded location and had fun just being there as a family. Scott picked us up in his skiff from the Seldovia Port for our wet beach landing. Since there were 5 adults plus our food and personal belongings, it took two trips in the skiff to get us all there. From the time we stepped off the skiff and onto the beach in front of the cabin, we started to relax. We loved beach combing at low tide, watching the tide come in and go out, using the kayaks to see otters, watching the Bald Eagles and their young, and drinking coffee on the front deck. Two of us even tried fishing, but the waters were a little rough and no fish were caught. Scott and Janet were wonderful hosts and took care of all our needs. We will definitely go back and look forward to sharing this piece of paradise with our friends and family. It was definitely a blessing to stay there. Thanks and Praise!

Absolutely beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

This property is epic. The cabin is the perfect Alaskan getaway, surrounded by forest and the bay, otters and eagles. Very quickly the rest of the world fell away. Scott is an excellent host and his stories of Alaska kept us enthralled for hours, and we live in Alaska. We kayaked around Seldovia Bay and watched groups of otters play and eat. We will definitely visit again! And it was a definite bonus to meet his nephew, the ultimate Alaskan workhorse.

Owner's Response: Wow! Thanks so much!!!! I sincerely enjoyed meeting you guys. I feel like a made real friends when you visited. It was so neat to have an Alaskan pilot fly down, and I got to pick you up right at the airport at high tide. I'm making constant improvements to the cabin, its been a long labor of love, and we love to share it with both our new Alaskan friends and folks from "outside" Alaska. I've added a Cell Phone Signal Booster, which helps me manage the business with a WiFi hot spot. I'm bringing down another solar panel this week for extra power to run it, and am finally getting around to mounting the panels on a permanent pole. I love working on the place, and wake up in paradise every day I am there! I'm glad you like my stories, I have had an amazing and interesting life with 41 winters in Alaska, and Seldovia Bay is the icing on the cake. I've been lucky to experience Alaska in ways that most do not get the opportunity to experience. I hope Janet can be down for your next visit. She's the more likable member of the family;-) I'm hoping to do something about those all winters in Alaska with this next upcoming one. Thank you again for your very kind remarks, I am honored and humbled!!

Beautiful Area, nice host, cabin not 100% complete

  • 4 of 5

A small group of us stayed here for 4 nights to see Seldovia. The view across the bay is outstanding, and the host (Scott) was very nice and accommodating. A couple items worth mentioning...

- This is a remote location, which is great. Just be advised you'll need a ride on the host's boat to get to town (about 15 min, not accessible otherwise).

- The cabin is nice, but not totally finished. We initially were not aware there is not a full bathroom in the cabin (it's more of 1/2 bathroom for showering). We had just assumed there was (it may have stated that there wasn't one, we may have missed that). So you'll be using a separate outhouse behind the house to do your thing. There's also a few unfinished items here and there (mostly electrical). We were totally fine with this, but it should be noted.

- Scott's fishing guide is great. We'd definitely use him again. Great time, nice boat, lots of fish!

All in all, a nice stay.

Owner's Response: Dave, your concerns are noted, please check the listing description and I think I have sufficiently addressed future guests expectations. Improvements to my service and the property continue to be made. I am glad you found the Hans, my fish guide did a great job. The cabin is off grid and has a functional solar electrical system.while the cabin is wired for a conventional on grid system, that is planned for the future, thus it appears to be unfinished. There are 12v LED lights in the kitchen and bath, with more coming upstairs before it gets dark at night;-) (The kitchen, bath and living room are wired and hot with 110v and there is also a USB charging port for cell phones, and a 110v radio for your listening pleasure. Additionally, I just added a cell phone booster, which greatly enhances the functionality of cell service. With prior arrangement, I can now turn on wifi and give people access on line. Most cell providers should be able to get service, a significant improvement, however ATT still remains spotty. The on demand hot water shower is working great. The kitchen sink has hot running water to it. We have very good water on site. This is a Alaskan wilderness lodge, and accessible by boat only. Seldovia Harbor is a short boat ride away. Guests should be prepared to load and unload via skiff on the beach. Proper foot ware, water resistant layered rain gear etc must be worn to assure your comfort and safety. Thanks for giving a review and for letting me know what I can do better. I continue to refine the experience thanks to feed back from my astute guests.

Tranquility and fun

  • 5 of 5

This summer we are getting of the beaten path with our kids; what a place to start it all off! The cabin is absolutely beautiful; handcrafted with pride and clear talent. However, that's not even half the beauty of this location. The property is stunning to say the least. The combination of the sea air and the adjacent waterfall combined with the sounds of nature and not much else, makes for a tranquil stay. An eagle nests high in a Sitka spruce to the right of the cabin, sea otters play and feed daily right off the deck. Black bears keep to themselves but make for a fun spotting expereince. Clams, muscles, snails, worms line the beach (at low tide). Loons call just off shore while Eagles emit their whistling piping calls from above. It's that good! Scott and his wife, the owners of the cabin, are magnificent people who went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable and carefree as possible. The clear attention to details did not go unnoticed nor unappreciated!

Owner's Response: You guys were great guests. We enjoyed how you interacted with your children, and rain or shine, you guys were playing and enjoying fun family time on the beach. We've officially adopted you, and hope to see you back soon. Scott Update mid July, the eagle babies are now really big, and on the edge of their nest practicing with their wings for when they take their first flight. The momma has blessed us with some pretty great fish hunting skills, including taking a salmon about 100 yards off shore and swimming with her wings to the beach, hauling the still fighting salmon out of the water to higher ground. Really cool to watch.
