About this property

MeltAway Cottage: Water Front with Spectacular Views - Rest, Relax and Enjoy!

Welcome to the south side of the island - Exuma’s hidden gem!

Your worries fade away as you pull into the yard and catch your first glimpse of the turquoise water in front of MeltAway Cottage (a non-smoking property). We are located just 8 minutes by car east of George Town in Masters Harbour, Bahama Sound 11 West.

The house is situated directly on the water’s edge across from an expansive sandbar (bonefish flats). Our two-story house has a spacious open floor plan that includes a large, screened porch with seating at both ends. From either vantage point you can greet the day peacefully with your morning coffee/tea and then kick back and relax after your day’s adventures while enjoying a beverage, grilling a steak, and marveling at the spectacular sunsets.

MeltAway Cottage is a fully furnished 3 bedroom, 2-bath home with additional loft space that can be used for sleeping or storage. The house has hurricane proof/low-e windows throughout. There is an air conditioning system in the main living area (kitchen/living room). This system helps to cool down the open loft area as well. Bedrooms have ceiling fans as well as air conditioning. The kitchen has stainless appliances (large French door fridge/freezer, microwave, stove/oven) with plenty of cookware, utensils, and small appliances (coffee maker, keurig, kettle, waffle maker, toaster, and blender). The dining area can seat up to 10 people (6 comfortably at the table when extended and 4 on bar stools at the islands). There is a Weber BBQ for your grilling needs. Ceiling fans in the screened porch help to keep it cooler on those rare days without a breeze.

MeltAway Cottage is connected to city water and has a freshwater cistern available as back-up.

The patio in front of the house has plenty of seating including two lounge chairs; an outdoor hammock and there is also another comfortable hammock in the screened porch.

There are four kayaks available for your use (2 singles and 2 tandem) as well as two stand up paddleboards (SUPS).

We have internet that usually allows for watching Netflix and other streaming channels on the Smart TV. The internet is not as high-speed as you are used to at home, but it is just fine for checking emails and zooming with family and friends. There are several games for the family (Yahtzee, Monopoly, Rummikub and Scrabble). Guests have started leaving books, so we also have a small library.

You will find everything you need for your stay in and around George Town - grocery stores, a fantastic butcher shop (Prime Island Meats), restaurants/bars, liquor stores, bank machine (Royal Bank), gas station and you can purchase local souvenirs at the straw market and other small stores in town.

Exuma offers an abundance of sun, sand, and sea as well as incredibly friendly people. Stretch out on a lounge chair and catch some rays or take a dip in the ocean in front of the house to start your day. Depending on the tide you can walk or kayak to the sandbar across from the house. There is also decent snorkeling along the shoreline so bring your gear.

There are many spectacular beaches on both Great and Little Exuma that are accessible by car (a rental car is a must on the island).

Being on or close to the water is what probably drew you to Exuma. Hop in the kayaks and paddle the shoreline or venture across to the nearby islands at high tide. The sand flats to the west are excellent for bone fishing. You can also arrange to have a guide with a boat pick you up at the house. Renting a boat in George Town (Minns) also allows access to all the beaches of Elizabeth Harbor and Stocking Island. Sightseeing, adventure tours (swim with the pigs, visit the iguanas, snorkel in underwater caves at Thunderball Grotto) and SCUBA diving trips can be also arranged in town.

If you enjoy being active, you can lace up your sneakers and safely walk/run the many roads in our neighbourhood or with the proper footwear explore the rocky shoreline. Folks are friendly so introduce yourself along the way.

If golf is your passion call and book a tee time and head north approximately 16 miles to Sandals Emerald Bay Resort and The Emerald Reef Golf Course (designed by Greg Norman).

In case you are concerned our housekeeping team do a deep clean and sanitize before and after all guest stays at MeltAway Cottage. We are and will continue to be in line with Covid 19 guidelines.

Upon booking, a detailed PDF document will be provided that will give you tips on what to bring, directions to various beaches and contact phone numbers to assist you in booking excursions. We will also be happy to answer your questions if you want to email us.

Everything you need!!
We had a great time at Meltaway Cottage, Sandy & David have thought about everything, extremely well equipped. As a young family we were truly content to have Meltaway Cottage as home for the week, a great base to stay at or to come back to after a day exploring the island. If we do return to the Bahamas, we'd like a Meltaway Cottage for our accommodation each time! Thank you!! Vicky, Andrew, Evie-Mae & Isabelle

A million dollar view
Our family of 3 stayed at MeltAway for 2 weeks. Overall, we were very happy. The best features were: * amazing view, which changes throughout the day * super-easy access into the water, whether you want to swim or kayak * excellent snorkelling right there - lots of local fish * water was typically very warm * kayaks were great quality, and had padded seats (luxury!) * covered porch areas were ideal for chilling out, especially in the evening * air-con and fans were very effective * location is pretty good - say 10 mins to George Town, 60 mins to far north of island, and 40 mins to far south. * the owners Sandy and David were super-responsive, and their local team was good. A few things to keep in mind: * rent an SUV. Many of the roads are unfinished, so good ground clearance is important, and 4WD a real bonus. We rented through Berlies, and found them good. Their office is 5 mins from the airport, but they did pick-up and drop-off, so we didn't have to walk. * George Town is less a city, more a village. There's a handful of small hotels and stores there, but don't expect to spend the day. We can recommend Karijava coffee shop for coffee and fresh brownies :) * food shopping is better than we expected, but very expensive. Prime Island Meats has plenty of variety, and is geared towards tourists. The supermarket in George Town is also well-stocked. * if you like to eat out, we found the restaurant/cafe recommendations on TripAdvisor pretty accurate. Many of the restaurants are attached to hotels, but we found them all happy to accept non-residents. Often worth a phone call in advance to make a reservation, and double-check their hours. * for dinner your first night, Peace & Plenty in George Town is a safe option. It's attached to a hotel - Italian-themed, and BBQ buffet on Thursdays. * most boating day trips seem to do the same basic route, taking in popular sights. We went for a full-day trip with Exuma Water Tours, and had a great time. Top-end power boat, and took us to a nice place for lunch. Our favourite was swimming with nurse sharks! * TripAdvisor implied everywhere would require cash, but we found most places accepted credit card. For bigger items like car rental, cash may save you a 5% card fee. Overall, MeltAway is a cosy home-away-from-home for a relatively quiet break, with great snorkelling and kayaking.

A beautiful and quiet paradise in Exuma
We spent the most wonderful month at MeltAway Cottage. The island of Great Exuma has so much to see and we made many afternoon trips. Coming home to the peace of MeltAway was something we looked forward to each day. The screened porch was the perfect place for morning tea, and for relaxing in the evening. The tides were fascinating and we went out to check the tide level many times a day. Snorkelling slowly along the rocks provided many sights (anemones, jellyfish, starfish, sea cucumbers, fish). The sand bar was so cool! David and Sandy were the perfect VRBO hosts. Communication was top notch and the cottage had everything - from spices, to towels, to beach chairs, kayaks, blankets, bogie boards, movies on a hard drive, fast internet, an excellent BBQ. If given the chance to spend another vacation at MeltAway we’d take it in a heartbeat. Thank you sincerely David and Sandy!

Great stay
The drive to the house off the main highway was legendary! Great for those who love making a game out of how many potholes you failed to get around. :) It was fun but SUV recommended. The house is on the older side but had everything you needed including stuff you didn't know you did. The kitchen was better equipped then my own with every utensil under the sun. Great propane bbq. We loved the screened in porch and used it much more than we thought we would. The waterfront was great for relaxing in the sun and had a nice umbrella when shade was needed. We had a blast in the water and although we were initially surprised by how cool it was, we quickly got used to it. The kayaks and water chairs were a definite bonus. Comfortable beds and updated bathrooms. We did have a few issues which we reached out to the hosts about and they were resolved as quickly as possible. Great stay!

After living and working in the Canadian Eastern Arctic (Iqaluit, Nunavut) for over 34 years we decided that our retirement would lead us to a vacation property in the Bahamas. We left Nunavut and have retired to a lakefront home outside of Northbrook, Ontario and recently part time in Whitehorse, Yukon to be near our children. We love living by the water (ocean/lake) no matter where we are.

Why they chose this property

After viewing several properties on both sides of the island we decided that the south side of the island suited our life style. We love to be on the water with our kayaks so a property with a boat well was what we chose. We are located close to several of the most amazing, almost deserted beaches one will ever find so we have the best of both worlds. The area is safe and a fabulous setting for couples, family vacations and obviously it's a retiree’s paradise.

What makes this property unique

MeltAway Cottage offers tranquility, tropical breezes, beautiful vistas from a large screened porch, spectacular sunsets, star gazing with no light pollution, rustling palm trees and water lapping in the boat well right beside the house. Swimming is safe and you can literally walk to the sandbar (bonefish flats) off the porch steps at low tide. We just put in a small sand filled lagoon to make water access even easier for young children.
