About the property

Downtown Apartment for Art, Culture and Architecture Lovers

This lovely downtown Arts and Crafts gem offers two floors of spacious comfort. It is the perfect alternative for families, friends, and business travelers who appreciate a peaceful hideaway in an atmosphere of art, culture and history. With its own private entrance, this 1350 sq. ft. rental provides absolute privacy and a charming English-style courtyard for your exclusive use. High speed wireless internet, cable and Netflix.

This historically designated Arts and Crafts style home, circa 1913 is situated in the safe upscale community of Cabbagetown located in the heart of Toronto. This vacation rental includes two floors (main and garden level) of absolute privacy in an apartment with a separate entrance, approx. 1350 square feet, with an outdoor deck and private walled in courtyard for your exclusive use.

This fully private and furnished self-catering unit is a perfect alternative for vacationers or business travelers who appreciate a peaceful hideaway in an atmosphere of culture and history; in fact you wouldn't know you were in the middle of Canada’s largest city! This home provides what a hotel room cannot, space for friends and family traveling together to enjoy a beautiful common space to relax and dine in an affordable way.

The area is perfect for architecture buffs (the New York Times described it as the largest enclave of restored Victorian homes in North America) and this century home on a quiet, beautiful tree-lined street features an old-fashioned front porch shaded by wisteria and a gingko tree ( Frank Lloyd Wright’s favourite combination). The gardens are designed with authentic arts and crafts principles inspired by British garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.

The rental space includes a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel fridge and dishwasher, a microwave, a gas stove and wall oven. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen size mattress, dresser and a built in closet with mirrored doors. The other bedroom with the twin set does not have a door; a thick curtain separates it from a large open space with a mirrored dresser, closet and seating area. There is a bathroom with a shower, marble vanity and deep soaker tub.

Many original features are intact such as Southern Georgia pine floors, high baseboards, historic mouldings, a pocket door and a wood burning fireplace in a spacious and comfortable living room and separate dining room. There are beautiful botanical dishes and a fully equipped kitchen to create delicious gourmet meals. The property owner is a fine artist whose original paintings you will find throughout the apartment; in fact you may find yourself feeling you are staying in an art gallery!

You can walk most everywhere, a car is unnecessary but if you need a car, the Green P lot across the street has Car2Go, Autoshare, and Zipcar rentals. Parking is available at a Green P lot just a few steps away, OR I can order you a temporary parking pass from the City of Toronto. A weekly pass is $25 in total. There are streetcar and bus routes just around the corner and within a few short blocks you will find every amenity you will need for a comfortable stay.

There are coffee shops (Starbucks, Jet Fuel, and Tim Hortons at the corner), gourmet delis (Daniel et Daniel, the best pain chocolat, The Scullery, the best ginger scones in TO and the Epicure for deli meats and cheeses), award-winning restaurants (F’Amelia and the House on Parliament), liquor and beer stores, No Frills and organic grocery stores, and even a few rare breeds at Riverdale arm a few blocks away!

Toronto is Canada's largest city, the fourth largest in North America, and home to a diverse population of about 2.8 million people. It is a global centre for business, finance, arts and culture and is consistently ranked one of the world's most livable cities. In 2017, Toronto will honour Canada's 150th birthday with "TO Canada with Love," a year-long program of celebrations, commemorations and exhibitions. For information on non-emergency City services and programs, Toronto residents, businesses and visitors can visit http://www.toronto.ca, or call 311, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the wonderful stay at Aberdeen. We appreciate the thoughtful things you did to make us comfortable. The platter of cheeses and munchies was delicious, and the starter kit of food in the fridge was great the first morning. We loved reading the books to Tempest. You have a lovely home and your paintings are beautiful! Merci!

Beautiful property in heart of quaint Cabbagetown

  • 5 of 5

We love this place from the moment we stepped foot inside. Victoria has thought of everything. Tastefully furnished, comfortable and inviting. The living areas are spacious and delightful--especially loved the garden out back. The kitchen has everything you would ever need. The lower level bedrooms are comfortable and well-appointed. Would definitely recommend. Victoria is warm and welcoming.

Great Neighborhood, Wonderful Host

  • 5 of 5

This home is a comfortable and charming base for exploring Toronto. We were first time visitors and enjoyed the neighborhood and the city. Victoria was a wonderful host and the home was well equipped. The courtyard was a sweet place for morning coffee or afternoon wine. The sitting room was comfortable and the kitchen had everything you could need. Victoria went out of her way to make us feel welcomed and provided excellent information. We are used to a king size bed so we were a bit tight in the bed but the space downstairs with the bedroom, extra sleeping area and bathroom was well set up and plenty big. We loved this neighborhood and most evenings cancelled reservations further out and walked to a local restaurant and strolled through the beautiful streets. We would recommend this home for a couple.

Lovely house tucked back in a quiet neighborhood. Short walk to restaurants and the trolley.

  • 4 of 5

Victoria was a lovely host. She had a plate with cheese, crackers, and fruit waiting for us with a bottle of wine. Perfect for our two little ones who had just travelled from New Hampshire. She helped us get settled and gave some pointers to the neighborhood. The house is in a great spot from which to explore the city. The Carlton Street trolley is a 5 minute walk away which takes you to the heart of downtown. Parking is relatively easy in the nearby lot, however if you can travel without a car, it's nice to not worry about parking. Cabbagetown is a favorite place to stay because of the restaurants and family neighborhood feel. We would love to stay here again and look forward to returning.

Very comfortable, quiet abode in Cabbagetown

  • 4 of 5

It's not right downtown, but only a 20-minute walk to Dundas and Yonge. Also good streetcar service which we didn't need.

Good access to groceries, restaurants, etc.

Warm, clean, quiet. Well-outfitted. Beds comfortable.

Hostess friendly, accessible and helpful (although we needed nothing).

Pre-arrange municipal parking with her (at added cost) - that worked well.

Warm and cozy, well equipped, close to downtown

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a great week here, the house is warm and inviting and is fully equipped with everything you might need during your stay, from a complete kitchen and a large dining room table, to a washer and dryer if you need it. Even Netflix was included.(kids were happy about that)

There are some good restaurants nearby, and the streetcar is literally a one minute walk from the house. It will take you to Yonge Street in 5 minutes, or you can walk in 15-20. We had considered an apartment downtown but they looked like uninviting Hotel rooms and lacked the space and charm of this house. Victoria, the owner, is a lovely lady who will assist you with advice and recommendations if you need it. Would definitely stay there again.
