Le Tuffeau (2 bedrooms, Sleeps 4/6)
Built in the early 1800’s. Les Coindries is a traditional French farmstead with an individual two bedroom cottage and three 1-2 bedroom gites, built around a large courtyard typical of the region. The stone buildings with their tiled roofs are set in private walled garden accessed down a quiet lane and surrounded by rolling arable land, with lovely walks and cycle tracks nearby. The buildings have been carefully restored and converted to include the original oak beams and log burners. The cottage has a private patio/BBQ area and the gites have their own outside seating/eating area where you can enjoy a refreshing glass of wine after a busy day exploring the uncrowded and beautiful place. There is also a large gazebo seating space that can accommodate up to 14 people for al fresco dinning. The swimming pool is located in its own private area, with changing room and outside solar shower. A separate car park is available for guests use.
This area is perhaps the most characteristically French, of all the regions with its numerous chateaux, rolling vineyards and meandering rivers. The important but little known stunning Abbey at Fontevraud which contains the tombs of Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son Richard the Lion Heart is only a pleasant 30 minutes drive away. For more up-to-date entertainment, ‘Futuroscope’ is about 25km and the superlative zoo at Doue La Fointaine is well worth a visit.
Les Coindries can be found 11km south of Richelieu famous for it’s Cardinal of the same name the most powerful man in France during the reign of Louis XIII. The Cardinal spent his early life at the beautiful (though now partly ruined) Chateaux de Coussay and later building a magnificent palace and town of Richelieu filled with Renaissance statuary, including the two slaves of Michel Angelo and masterpieces by Poussin. The great palace was later demolished, but the huge park remains as well as the moat and island on which the Cardinal first built the palace. This little known citadel is an architectural jewel of France and can be reach in 10 minutes from Les Coindries.
A further 20 minutes drive takes you to the lovely fortress town of Chinon offering outstanding examples of medieval architecture, with views over the river Vienne from the battlements that Joan of Arc would still recognise during her imprisonment. Saumur can be reached in 30 min with its fairytale recently restored castle, overlooking the Loire itself. Tours is about 1 hour away to the north, with Poitiers 45 minutes to the south both have regular flights from the UK.

Having rented accommodation in France in the past, we were expecting the gite to be very basic but we were pleasantly surprised at the size of this one. It was also clean, airy and very well equipped and having use of a pool was a definite bonus. We were greeted by Colin the collie (who we all fell in love with), promptly followed by Clair and Robert. Our hosts were extremely friendly and very knowledgeable of the area and were able to make recommendations re. places to visit. We were, however, quite happy to chill on this holiday and only ventured forth to visit the lake on one day (which is worth a visit, especially with youngsters/teens/young adults). One great recommendation was lunch at Le Ricordeau in Loudun. We had a stunning 4 course lunch for 18 euro and had one of the best meals we have had in a long time (including Michelin star restaurants!). We would definitely recommend a visit to Le Coindries and, if you have time, Le Ricordeau for a special meal. We certainly hope to return to both in the not too distant future.
Thank you for your review. We agree this is a great place to chill and relax, especially by the pool which is such a sun trap. We love the Le Richordeau as well, it is fast becoming our favourite restaurant. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.
A lovely gite
The gite was lovely - clean and comfortable. The pool and courtyard garden were really picturesque. The owners were really great - friendly and helpful. The gite is within driving distance of many interesting towns/ chateaux and therefore made a great base to explore the area. We were made to feel very welcome. We did have problems with the patchy wifi - a result of being in a very rural area.
Relaxed, peaceful & lovely hosts!
We wanted a peaceful break away and that's exactly what we got. The gite was decorated nicely and was well equipped with everything we needed.
We were lucky with the weather so made full use of the lovely pool and comfy sun loungers.
Claire & Rob made us feel very welcome and we look forward to returning.
Désolée la location citée ne correspond pas à notre location.Nous étions à la Belle Indienne à Serigny . Propriétaires Claire et Robert très sympa. Séjour très réussi. Si la possibilité nous est redonnée nous aimerions bien revenir.
Nearest seaside resort is La Rochelle about 2 hours away. The beaches on Ile de Re are beautiful and it is a well-sought-after resort for the French in summer.
Poitiers airport is 45 mins away with Tours airport being about an hour. Eurostar and TGV to Poitiers. Limoges and Nantes are 2 hours. Use of a car is recommended in this area.
The nearest village is 10 minutes walk (3 mins by car) with a boulangerie, epicerie and bar/restaurant. Richelieu is 10 mins by car and the charming town of Chinon is a leisurely 30 minutes drive through rolling hills and vineyards. The famous Fontevraud Abbey and Futuroscope are 30km away, and many wonderful chateaux are within a radius of 15 km.
Richelieu our local town, is a wonderful example of an unspoilt and largely original medieval walled city of great charm and character. The main square recently redeveloped and restored to its original 15th century style, features cafes, bars and shops. Banks and restaurants are down the little streets which lead to hidden properties straight from the days of the Cardinal who founded his domain and built the city in the early 1600’s.
The whole area is a haven and an antidote from the stresses of modern life, with few cars and many little roads to explore it is a cyclists and walkers paradise. There are many beautiful types of woodland with defined paths and easy access and a few minutes away is a splendid nature trail build on the former railway which ran from Chatellerault to Loudon.
