La Pressoir (1 Bedroom, Sleeps 2/4)
Built in the early 1800’s. Les Coindries is a traditional French farmstead with an individual two bedroom cottage and three 1-2 bedroom gites, built around a large courtyard typical of the region. The stone buildings with their tiled roofs are set in private walled garden accessed down a quiet lane and surrounded by rolling arable land, with lovely walks and cycle tracks nearby. The buildings have been carefully restored and converted to include the original oak beams and log burners. The cottage has a private patio/BBQ area and the gites have their own outside seating/eating area where you can enjoy a refreshing glass of wine after a busy day exploring the uncrowded and beautiful place. There is also a large gazebo seating space that can accommodate up to 14 people for al fresco dinning. The swimming pool is located in its own private area, with changing room and outside solar shower. A separate car park is available for guests use.
This area is perhaps the most characteristically French, of all the regions with its numerous chateaux, rolling vineyards and meandering rivers. The important but little known stunning Abbey at Fontevraud which contains the tombs of Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son Richard the Lion Heart is only a pleasant 30 minutes drive away. For more up-to-date entertainment, ‘Futuroscope’ is about 25km and the superlative zoo at Doue La Fointaine is well worth a visit.
Les Coindries can be found 11km south of Richelieu famous for it’s Cardinal of the same name the most powerful man in France during the reign of Louis XIII. The Cardinal spent his early life at the beautiful (though now partly ruined) Chateaux de Coussay and later building a magnificent palace and town of Richelieu filled with Renaissance statuary, including the two slaves of Michel Angelo and masterpieces by Poussin. The great palace was later demolished, but the huge park remains as well as the moat and island on which the Cardinal first built the palace. This little known citadel is an architectural jewel of France and can be reach in 10 minutes from Les Coindries.
A further 20 minutes drive takes you to the lovely fortress town of Chinon offering outstanding examples of medieval architecture, with views over the river Vienne from the battlements that Joan of Arc would still recognise during her imprisonment. Saumur can be reached in 30 min with its fairytale recently restored castle, overlooking the Loire itself. Tours is about 1 hour away to the north, with Poitiers 45 minutes to the south both have regular flights from the UK.

Quiet and pretty setting with a happy atmosphere
We were made very welcome at Les Coindries. We had visited a year ago and can see how Claire and Robert have worked very hard over the last year to improve the gites. They will admit that they have not finished their refurbishment programme yet and we shall look forward to visiting again to enjoy another stay.
The setting is quiet and very pretty with a central raised border which allows each gite to be private and yet within the body of the courtyard so no one feels isolated. Bbqs and sunshades with outside tables and chairs are perfect for outdoor living when the weather is good whilst inside the gites are prettily and comfortably furnished. Claire and Robert are on hand to offer advice as to where to visit with suggestions for all ages. There is a gated outdoor swimming pool with a self service bar, chairs, inflatable toys etc.
Les Coindries is a lovely place to relax, walk, cycle and visit the nearby chateaux and countryside.
Thank you for your review we enjoyed having you here and look forward to having you stay with us again.

Future scope is within easy reach and worth a visit
Property hosts were welcoming and knowledgable about the area.
Do forget to ask about the vending machine of your French stick!
Thank you for your review. The sunny weather certainly gave the opportunity to use the sheltered pool area for some Springtime sun bathing. The baguette vending machine always makes us smile when we collect our french stick.
Nous avons passés un séjour agréable dans un cadre magnifique. L'accueil des hôtes est très chaleureux. Un vrai hameau de paix, profitez de la belle piscine !
Thanks to Claire, Robert and Colin...
Thank you for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay and especially the swimming pool.
Nearest seaside resort is La Rochelle about 2 hours away. The beaches on Ile de Re are beautiful and it is a well-sought-after resort for the French in summer.
Poitiers airport is 45 mins away with Tours airport being about an hour. Eurostar and TGV to Poitiers. Limoges and Nantes are 2 hours. Use of a car is recommended in this area.
The nearest village is 10 minutes walk (3 mins by car) with a boulangerie, epicerie and bar/restaurant. Richelieu is 10 mins by car and the charming town of Chinon is a leisurely 30 minutes drive through rolling hills and vineyards. The famous Fontevraud Abbey and Futuroscope are 30km away, and many wonderful chateaux are within a radius of 15 km.
Richelieu our local town, is a wonderful example of an unspoilt and largely original medieval walled city of great charm and character. The main square recently redeveloped and restored to its original 15th century style, features cafes, bars and shops. Banks and restaurants are down the little streets which lead to hidden properties straight from the days of the Cardinal who founded his domain and built the city in the early 1600’s.
The whole area is a haven and an antidote from the stresses of modern life, with few cars and many little roads to explore it is a cyclists and walkers paradise. There are many beautiful types of woodland with defined paths and easy access and a few minutes away is a splendid nature trail build on the former railway which ran from Chatellerault to Loudon.
