Wonderful Casita in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Overview

About the property

One or two bedroom private casita 10 minutes from downtown San Miguel de Allende

Casita de los Arcos is spacious and comfortable with a large combined living room, dining area and kitchen. A separate bedroom area can be completely closed off for private space. Additional sleeping space in the main room can be added. Starting September, 2017 larger groups can book the adjacent casita with separate kitchen and bath for an additional US $95 per night!

The Casita de los Arcos is topped by a 14 foot boveda (domed brick) ceiling. On one side of the living area is a cozy gas fireplace, and on the other is a full kitchen with a dining area. The kitchen and full bath are finished with traditional Mexican tile. Guests can use the entire 3,000 sq. foot veranda and a large front yard, which is part of the larger Casa de los Arcos mansion. Our home offers a large amount of outdoor space not available in the center of town. It is located in the Atascadero neighborhood, one of the most desirable "colonias" in San Miguel. On a hillside overlooking Centro, it has the advantage of being in a quiet, residential neighborhood but still within walking distance from the "Centro". You can walk downhill through charming neighborhoods on cobblestone streets into the heart of San Miguel with its unique mix of Spanish colonial architecture and Mexican charm, its many shops, restaurants and churches. One direction takes you to the main market, and another takes you to the “Jardin” or main square. At the end of the day, you can return to a quiet and comfortable home.

Near us is San Miguel's unique botanical garden, the Charco del Ingenio, which protects many indigenous species including 156 species of migratory and resident birds, and 110 species of butterflies.

Just past the Charco you'll find San Miguel's shopping mall and Cinemex theaters, as well as the famous “El Tianguis” - the huge Tuesday Market which is only a 10 minute walk away.

From the Casita you can walk 10 minutes downhill to reach town, or call a taxi. Taxis in San Miguel are plentiful and inexpensive (30 to 40 pesos per ride, or US$2.00 to US$2.75). It's always easy to catch a taxi in town for access to all of San Miguel, or for a ride home. Taxi drivers are friendly, knowledgeable and many speak English.

We also have a large rooftop with wonderful views of downtown and the surrounding countryside.

About George and Julie Kalmar

George and I have lived in Los Angeles for 20+ years. We now live in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. We have two children, ages 13 and 23, and we work in international education and other creative fields.

We enjoy sharing our homes with visitors to these three great cities: Los Angeles, San Miguel, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Our home in Los Angeles is an architecturally significant California modern home with original appointments and design.

Our home in San Miguel is a spacious, traditional Mexican-style casa, with a large veranda and yard, and an adjacent casita.

Our traditional Santa Fe-style adobe casita is located on 13 acres of high desert, 30 minutes southeast of Santa Fe.

Like many of our guests, we love to explore the world, and hosting people from all over the world enriches our own experience. We always provide attention that is both professional and personal.

Why George and Julie Kalmar chose San Miguel de Allende

Casita de Los Arcos offers you an opportunity to enjoy San Miguel's 'Centro' just a few minutes walk away, but it also gives you a chance to come home after an active day out and relax in a tranquil and beautiful, spacious home away from the noise of the city and rejuvenate for the next day.

What makes this bungalow unique

Casita de Los Arcos is between the Centro and the new shopping mall, but it remains in a classic San Miguel setting on cobble-stone streets and hidden 'callejones'' or walking streets.

A delightful stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a relaxing and delightful time in San Miguel. Julie and George were extremely friendly and helpful and always there to answer any questions. The casita was spacious and very comfortable and had everything we needed, including essentials in the kitchen. The house itself was beautiful with its arches and terrace and it was always nice to come back to. When we first arrived it was very chilly but there were heaters in all the rooms in the casita and a very comfortable bed. After a few days it either got warmer, or we got used to the weather, and we didn't even use them. Although the first day the walk down to the center on the cobblestones appeared treacherous, we got used to it quickly and wound up walking down and back up every day. At night, a taxi was less than US$3.00.

The neighborhood was very pretty and very quiet, so it was nice to get out of the city at the end of the day. The Botanical Garden, with its great cactus and other desert plants, was beautiful and within walking distance. It satisfied our desire for a "hike" out of the city. All in all, a great stay.

Well located, charming, excellent hosts

  • 5 of 5

Julie and George were excellent hosts. The casita is very private and quiet in the exclusive Atascadero neighborhood. A jewel with traditional architecture, well located, with a 15 minute downhill walk to the central plaza. Easy access to the "Charco del Ingenio" Nature Preserve for walking or running. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Calm, clean, quiet

  • 5 of 5

The casita is nicely furnished with thoughtful touches, such as candles and sunblock. We found it to be a lovely place for our getaway. Julie and George are accommodating without being intrusive, and were there when we needed help or suggestions.

It's a bit of a schlep from the Jardín, and all uphill on the way back, but we were OK with that, once we found the route that avoided the street with the steps (!). We liked that it is close to the Botanical Gardens and in a quiet neighborhood. All in all we had a perfect stay.

Beautiful property in a lovely neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I loved the casita at Arcos de San Miguel. It is architecturally appealing and well lit, with brick boveda ceilings and rounded windows. The furniture is classic and attractive. The casita is connected to the villa, owned by a lovely expat couple who lives there with their teenage son. The owners, Julie and George, were very helpful throughout the entire rental planning process, and when we were staying at the casita. The property itself is expansive. We had access to the yard and a lovely sitting area. Atascadero is a safe, quiet neighborhood with many lovely homes. We felt as if we were actually living in San Miguel, given that we had a spacious casita in a nice neighborhood, with delightful neighbors to assist us...

One of the major complaints that I heard from expats who live in town is that when you live too close to town it is very noisy, given the festivities that regularly occur. Fortunately, the casita at Arcos is far enough removed from town that it was very quiet. We were never bothered by firecrackers or loud music.

The only downside is that the 15 minute walk into town is downhill, on cobblestones. It is an interesting, attractive walk. But we always took a taxi back to the casita, given how steep the road is. We NEVER paid more than $3 for a taxi. Usually they charged $2 or $2.50 per ride. But I'd recommend that anyone who stays here bring comfortable walking shoes with a heavy sole. Forget about high heels or flimsy shoes! Actually, it doesn't matter where you stay in San Miguel, you will need good walking shoes. It is the type of town where you walk everywhere. It's beautiful, the streets are narrow, and you'll usually get somewhere faster if you walk. The traffic can be intense, given how narrow the streets are. But the drivers are amazingly polite. The local drivers give walkers the right of way most of the time.

Since we visited in late November into December, it was chilly in the evening. But the casita has a nice gas fireplace in the living area, and heaters in the bedroom and bathroom. So we were always comfortable when the temperatures dropped at night.

The open kitchen area was perfect. We had planned to cook more, so actually stocked the frig with fresh produce. But the restaurants are so outstanding in San Miguel, and the cost to eat out so reasonable, that we typically only had our breakfast, with fresh local coffee, at the casita. And we were able to reheat the leftovers from the various meals.

Owner's Response: Sorry Barbara! Heating homes is tricky in San Miguel because homes do not have central heating. We all rely on propane gas heaters or electric heaters. We will have the fireplace fixed soon, but did not want you to use it while you were here since it was not up to par! Normally it is not so cold in October. So we used the electric heaters for you instead for safety.

we had a wonderful stay at Julie and George's casita. the casita is clean with every amenity one could wish for. Julie and George were amazing hosts. very welcoming and warm, always trying to make our stay better. they even invited us to their 4th of July party where we met all their wonderful friends and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. our kids also enjoyed themselves. the casita and our hosts are kid friendly and our girls were able to run around the yard freely and just be kids. we will definitely be returning.
