About Sue Jaffer
I (Sue) am Australian, but lived in England for nearly 20 years. My husband Nick is English, originally from Derbyshire, and his brother and sisters still live in the UK. We brought our children, James and Rachel, up in a village in the Chilterns. Today we live in Melbourne, Australia but come to UK frequently, to see family and because of Nick's academic work at Oxford.
Sue Jaffer purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Sue Jaffer chose Wirksworth
We think Acacia Cottage is special - quiet, very well appointed and with wonderful views from every window. The Peak District is a magical place, with lots of history and spectacular scenery. Whatever you like doing - eating, walking, cycling, shopping, driving around - the area can cater for you. We are close to the Southern end of the Peak District rail trail - you can hire cycles at Middleton Top - and less than one hour's drive to the High Peak with its caves and mountains. Wirksworth, Cromford and Ashbourne have good restaurants. Matlock Bath and Matlock are within 15 minutes drive. For children there are the attractions at Abraham's Heights, Carsington Water and - not too far away - Alton Towers. If you like stately homes, we are close to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. There are many gardens you can visit, including Lea Rhododendrum Gardens just across the valley. The local train line is easy to get to, about 20 minutes into Derby (with free parking at the station). If you like history, the museum of Arkwright's Mill at Cromford is a must. Canal walks are also a local feature, from Cromford.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our cottage is the ideal base for a relaxing holiday. Blossoms in spring, wonderful colours in autumn, rural views all year round. Local walks to Black Rocks are lovely, and Wirksworth is a charming town with a thriving hobby railway. Bolehill is on the edge of the Peak District, with Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers, the High Peak and Bakewell all within easy driving distance. There are good local restaurants in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth, with many gastro pubs a short drive away.

Wasn’t as difficult to find as we first imagined, we had been given full instructions by the owner. Had all the amenities we expected although we didn’t use the study come bedroom which we found was quite cool. The underfloor heating was great but did vary from room to room. Is handy for visiting several attractions and we walked down into whirksworth by a path which was very pleasant. Not the best time of the year to see the beauty of Derbyshire but the views from the cottage were tremendous. We will have to return in the warmer months.
An excellent location and very well equipped cottage
We stayed at Acacia Cottage for 5 nights. The little village of Bolehill is situated perfectly to explore the Peak District. While it rained and was very windy most of the time we were there, we still enjoyed our time in the area. The scenery is gorgeous and there is so much to see and do. We visited the Treak Blue John Mine, which was amazing. We spent a day at Chatsworth -- a must see! Don't forget Dovedale Stepping Stones, Ilam where the bubonic plague came to an end due to the courage of two priests. Tissington Village is lovely. Oh -- you want to know more about the cottage?? It is spacious and clean and very welcoming. The beds are comfortable, too. The linens are the best we have experienced in 4 years of renting cottages all over England and France. There are 2 full bathrooms on the first floor and a wc on the ground floor. The glass enclosed sunroom is very relaxing. Wi-fi connection was a bit iffy, but mostly ok. For some reason not all our equipment connected to the wi-fi. We had 3 cell phones and 1 laptop, and only 2 of the cell phones connected. Once we removed the laptop, the other cell phone connected. Also, on our last day, the wi-fi did not connect and we were asked to set up broadband. Not sure what all of that meant, but we were a bit miffed. The house has plenty of electrical outlets, so you don't have to go looking for a place to plug in your charging cords. This is a wonderful place for anywhere from one couple to 4 couples, or a family of 3-8. I highly recommend.
Very glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at the cottage and the manysights to see in the Peak District. Sorry about the wifi - we will investigate and make sure it is working!
Lovely property which met all our needs.
The property was well situated with lovely views across to Wirksworth. It was a good base to explore popular parts of Derbyshire. Just need to mention a couple of things which the owner may not be aware of. We arrived in pouring rain and there was a possible problem with gutter just above the main entrance as water was gushing down. The only other thing was that the baking trays were past their best - we were cooking meals every night and needed to use them. It didn't become a problem. Overall we had a wonderful week and would certainly return again..
Thank you for letting us know about the gutter and the baking tray. We will look to see if there is a blockage, and will get some new trays. Glad you had a wonderful time!
Outstanding property, Outstanding views
Property was exactly as described in the listing, clean and comfortable. The property is not easy to find but the host provided excellent instructions prior to our arrival and we went straight there. We absolutely loved our stay and look forward to returning there when we next visit the area.
Fab cottage. Would stay again and rec to friends.
Alton Towers, a major theme park, is about 45 mins drive away
Haddon Hall is close by, and Chatsworth House around 30 mins.
