We were lucky enough to work on the idyllic Island of Lana'i in the mid-90's and during that time, had the opportunity to purchase a new plantation home. Our then 3 year old daughter named the house 'The Pink House' and it has been referred to by that name ever since. Lanai is old Hawaii, with a slightly foreign feel. It is a place where you can still swim with spinner dolphins and green sea turtles while counting the whale breaches and not seeing another soul for miles on a sandy beach. We currently live in the mid-west and dream of the utopia of Lana'i and escape to paradise whenever we can.
Jean Buckley & John M. Thompson purchased this house in 1996
The Pink House is set in a quiet neighborhood in Lana'i City, where you will feel you have stepped back in time, to old Hawaii. This is life in the slow lane. You can dine on the front porch and view the gardens, the forest, the sunset after using the new barbecue grill. Walk to the pool, the movie theatre, tennis courts, Golf Course or Dole Square, and return home to the comfort of the Pink House. Lana'i is home to the best climate in the world....without the crowds that normally accompany perfect weather. 76 degrees with light trades in town, with cool nights for great sleeping....and sweet dreams.
The Pink House is surrounded by gardens including palms, papaya, lime, tangerine, avocado, banana and coconut. There is lemongrass and kaffir lime growing steps away from the front door. Bird of Paradise, ginger and heliconia flowers surround the house. You can shower off the beach sand at the outdoor shower. Enjoy the art filled walls of the Pink house,
and relax on the soft leather sectional as you unwind at the end of another magical day on Lana'i. State TAT tax ID.

My family of four stayed two nights in the Pink House. We loved it and should have stayed longer. This was our first visit to Lanai and did not know what to expect. The town of Lanai City is quite small and much less touristy than places we have visited on other Hawaiian islands, but there is an excellent movie theater, community swimming pool, grocery store, and a handful of restaurants within walking distance of the house. The house itself was lovely and clean. We will stay here again on future visits to Lanai. The house manager, Gail, was kind and helpful. While on the island, we visited the Lanai Cat Sanctuary and the Garden of the Gods (would recommend both). We also had a snack and drinks at the Four Seasons Lanai Manele Bay, followed by a few hours at the beach below the resort. This beach was fantastic and a highlight of our trip.
The Pink House
We just returned from a memorable week’s stay at the Pink House. We appreciated all the thought that went into making this a comfortable, cozy place to stay. The kitchen is well appointed with ice cream scoops, good knives, juicer, salad spinner and even a bread maker (with recipe). A grill is on the front porch, if that is your preference. There is an herb garden in the front yard for seasoning your home-prepared meals. We enjoyed eating at the bar, table and on the porch.
The furniture is beautiful and comfortable. There are blankets for snuggling in for the evening ---we did use them while watching a movie.
The beds were comfortable and sheets divine. It is so quiet at night!
The artwork is cheerful and works well in the home. There is a small library of books. We especially liked those on Hawaiian fish. It was helpful after our snorkeling adventures.
The guest book for the house has maps and menus for the local dining establishments. We tried the juice bar, Blue Ginger, The Lanai City Grill and Pele’s. We would recommend them all! We also enjoyed the art at the Mike Carroll Gallery.
The people of Lanai greeted us warmly and were very helpful. This is a community where you feel inherently safe wherever you may venture. We hiked much of the island and walked Lanai City every day.
This is a wonderful place to relax and feel at home.
The perfect retreat in an undiscovered tropical paradise! Our vacation at the Pink House could not have been been more enjoyable, relaxing, or convenient. A pleasant walk of four blocks took us to everything we needed- two grocery stores, the movie theatre, restaurants, a free nine-hole golf course, and a new heated swimming pool with free fitness classes. A rented car was needed only when we wanted to leave Lanai City go to the beaches or explore the rest of the island. The beautiful kitchen and dining area allowed us to 'eat in' as we wished and there were abundant tasty offerings at the nearby restaurants when we didn't want to cook. A favorite memory is of sunsets on the front porch and tapas and tropical drinks at the Lanai Grille at the Lanai Hotel. Lanai is safe, undeveloped, quiet, and very friendly. The Pink House felt like the perfect refuge in a secret tropical paradise.
The Pink House is Lana'i in a nutshell. Snuggled on the hill in the historic district, just down the street form the beautiful and delicious Inn at Lana'i , the Pink House is clean, bright, warm, private and comfortable. The neighbors are treasures, with beautiful gardens, and kind manners. The grocery store, art center, library, senior center, museum , fabulous community swimming pool, churches, Buddhist temple and hardware stores are an easy walk in flip flops. The beaches are close by car, as all Lana'i beaches are,and are beautiful. Whales and sea turtles galore! Easy day trip to Mauii by ferry, but it was hard to leave the little island! Local teenagers racing outrigger canoes on the beach at sunset. What more do you need for paradise vacation? Good kitchen, well supplied for folks who like to cook. Nearby organic farm for delicate fresh vegetables. Grocery stores with everything you need. If you want the real thing, the Pink House lets you be at home in Hawaii from day one. Take care of yourself and discover the magic of the island, and the lovely people who live there. Not for those who like glitter and the tourista experience. Lana'i is for relaxing, meditating, reading, walking, hiking, golf, tennis, community badmitton, basketbasll pick up games and local lore. Free water aerobics at teh community pool was really fun way to meet folks. Go to the senior center and meet the elders, and hear ukelele players. Check out the wonderful library movie collection. Go to the art center and pick up a new craft with the help of generous locals. Look a the stars in a gloriously dark sky. Very few mosquitos. Nothing to be afraid of. No pressures. Rich history. My dream restorativfe vacation. Highly recommended. Can you tell? We stayed two week and it was very, very, very hard to leave. Stay longer if you can. Your nervous system will thank you.
We are currently starting our second week here at the Pink House. I wish I could say that we were staying for a MONTH!!! This home is so comfortable and beautifully furnished. Plus there are fruit trees, an herb garden AND a new gas grill. We walk to the market, buy our dinner groceries, pick fruit and herbs and fire up the grill. While dinner is grilling, we have a cocktail on the porch and watch the sun set over Lana'i City. It is so special to be in a traditional OLD STYLE neighborhood - overlooking colorful metal roofs and tropical foliage. THIS IS NOT A COOKIE CUTTER DESTINATION. This is for those who appreciate a destination with color and character. (But who want to stay in a quality house!!)
The beach is a short drive away and it is perfect!! Shade trees, beautiful sand and water, uncrowded and with showers /public bathrooms?????? Holy cow!! What a score!
I honestly could go on and on. Are you a hiker? Hikes galore. A diver? Trilogy can't be beat. Concierge diving. There will be contact information at The Pink House for Blaine Williams, the local contact/dive master. DO IT!!! Just into relaxing? The Pink House has a hi def TV WITH INTERNET ACCESS! Cafes within walking distance, a pretty decent selection of wine and liquor at each of the three grocery stores at fair prices, a FREE heated community swming pool, a renovated movie theatre......you get the picture.
Bottom line, step back in time and slow down. You won't regret it.
