About Kirsty Anderson

Hi, I'm Kirsty and I manage Hang My Hat - a holiday let company in the gorgeous North East of England. My background is in tourism; I have managed a safari lodge in Kenya for a number of years, and I am now back in my home county. I love showing off the best of Northumberland - it is a county with so much to offer, not to mention; stunningly beautiful!

What makes this cottage unique

Madera Cottage is the place to go for real countryside peace and quiet, with very friendly locals. The village views over the Tyne and Derwent Valleys are stunning and a stay here provides a place to really unwind and recharge.

Not up to Owners Direct normal standards - drove away rather than stay

  • 1 of 5

In my view this property is not up to the standard that a customer is entitled to expect from holiday rentals, nor from Owners Direct, a company we have used successfully for many years

After gaining access to Madera Cottage on Saturday 26 May 2018 (which took about 45 minutes) and inspecting the property, we felt the “Cottage” was not of a suitable standard and simply left and returned home, though this was a 190-mile drive

We gave (in writing) the following specific reasons for leaving, though we could have added that some other aspects were not as good as we would have wished -

- “Bedroom 2” on the top floor has a Velux window (as appears in the photograph on the Owners Direct web-site), but there is no curtain or other light-sealing cover for it, so there is no facility to keep out early-morning light

- The window in “Bedroom 1” on the first floor does have shutters (but no curtains), but the left window could not be closed fully because of distortion due to rot and the window closure mechanism was broken

- It isn’t clear from the advertising that the bathroom is on the ground floor, which isn’t necessarily a problem in itself, but there is no banister or any form of hand-grip on the stairs, which means that anyone needing the toilet at night will have to put on some form of lighting (intrusive to others) or risk a fall

- Madera Cottage’s kitchen is at the back of the house, but the house has no “back” garden: immediately outside the kitchen window is another property’s garden with its garden seating - but the kitchen window has no form of curtaining, so there is absolutely no privacy - it is necessary to get dressed to use the kitchen even to make an early morning cup of tea or coffee

Hence we concluded that Madera Cottage was not acceptable for our week’s break

In particular, in our view, though the property appears on the OD web-site as “Gorgeous character 2-bedroom country cottage ….”, the property does not merit the expression “gorgeous”, and rental customers have a reasonable right to expect more privacy than is provided, particularly with the unshielded kitchen window next to a neighbour’s garden where members of that family were using that garden during the 40 minutes or so that we were in the property and there was washing drying there, suggesting fairly regular use

I believe that this property fails to meet normal levels of suitability for holiday rental - it falls well short of the levels we have found in using OD over many years

short stay peaceful and calm gettaway in a quaint and rustic cottage.

the cottage was immaculate and had all the amenities that were advertised. We availed ourselves of the suggestion to try the cuisine at the Feathers down the road and were immensely impressed.

We had a very enjoyable time. The recommendation to have a meal at The Feathers Inn was excellent. We would like to stay again sometime in the future..

Thank you for everything, Kirsty. We thoroughly enjoyed staying at your cozy cottage. The only thing to change would be the (G)AGA stove.... :-)
