No expenses were spared on this beautifully-decorated suite! The Fleur De Lis Suite is located on the 2nd floor of the Drake House, right above Charlotte's Coffee House, which is located in the Historic Millwork District in beautiful downtown Dubuque. It is ideal for one couple, but can sleep four. Making it perfect for a romantic get-away, or business travel. It has one bedroom with a queen-size bed, and two full baths. There is a fold-out sectional in the living area. You can walk downstairs for a great-tasting cup of coffee, breakfast or lunch without having to leave the building. This is a great plus on cold or rainy days! You can even have your coffee or food delivered to your room for no extra charge. It is beautifully decorated with hints of Julien Dubuque, and has been completely renovated. (See if you can find all the Fleur De Lis in it!!) We left some exposed, original brick to give each room character. It's fully furnished with new, upscale furnishings. A private deck & hot tub are included. Also included is a fireplace, washer/dryer. The kitchen is fully furnished, featuring granite counter tops, and including a coffee maker and toaster. There are two flat screen TV’s – one in the master bedroom, and one in the living area.

My husband and I are native Dubuquers. We came up with this idea after staying at a cozy vacation rental in La Jolla, CA. It sat on top of a small restaurant that served breakfast and lunch. My husband spotted this property, and approached me with the idea, stating that if I wasn't 1000 percent "In", he would just forget about it. Needless to say, I was 1000% "In", and here we are, over two years and an additional building later, ready to share our dream with you! We hope you will love it as much as we do!
Tim Rusk purchased this apartment in 2012
We chose this property for two reasons. First, we both grew up in this area of Dubuque. Second, we love what Dubuque is doing for the downtown area, and feel that the Millwork District will continue to grow and will be the place to go in Dubuque.
Being in the Millwork District of Dubuque is a huge advantage to our property. We are close to so many attractions, making your stay handy and convenient to whatever event or purpose you have to visit our beautiful city.
Don't know how to do justice to The Drake House. It exceeded all of our expectations in every way. Tim does an absolute fabulous job of seeing to it that you are taken care of in every way. We had the opportunity to stay in all three of the suites over the course of five days as we extended our visit to Dubuque and Tim was able to accommodate us with no advance notice but we had to change rooms. That was no problem as we simply left luggage by the door and when we returned it magically appeared by the door of the new suite. Tim assisted with it on arrival as well. His lovely mother manages the coffee shop downstairs and was extremely pleasant and a joy to see each morning when she delivered delicious hot coffee to our room. They didn't spare a thing when decorating and furnishing and everything is beautiful. The weather was mild, and we so enjoyed sitting out on the decks. I highly recommend this as the best place to stay while visiting Dubuque. I hope they add more properties as I think as people discover The Drake House and the Rusk family, it is going to difficult to find a vacancy.
My husband and I rented this property for our anniversary. Everything was great and we especially enjoyed the hot tub. The property owners are fantastic and very helpful for ideas of places to go as well as restaurants. We had breakfast from the coffee shop down stairs and they even delivered it to us. My husbands only regret was he didn't take time to get a piece of cherry pie from the coffee shop. If we are in Dubuque again, we would defiantly stay here.
My wife and I enjoyed a relaxing week at the Fleur, and would go back in a heartbeat. Having wanted to visit Dubuque and the National River Museum (I liked it better than the Shedd!) for a long time, this location was ideal. It's a city location on the edge of a fascinating urban revitalization district, where dozens of old millwork factories are being converted to shops, businesses, and apartments. It's pretty exciting to see.
In the apartment, all is spotlessly clean, all features pretty new, security is strong. Beautifully designed - every accessory is intriguing artwork. Hardwood floors and ancient (but scrubbed) brick walls suggest a low-dust environment, good for allergy sufferers. After dark, we spent hours on our 2nd floor balcony soaking in the hot tub, watching the stars.
Excellent kitchen/laundry area with late model equipment. 2 TVs, good wi-fi. Off-street private parking.
Many restaurants are close, and the coffee shop downstairs offers tasty breakfast and lunch at 20% off, delivered to your door. Tim is readily available there most business hours and by phone at other times, and is a pleasure to talk to. Dubuque Food Co-op - an excellent natural foods store - is just two blocks away (in a dazzlingly-restored Millwork District building. The Main Street business area is about the same stroll the other direction.
Some reviewers have mentioned noise. True, it's not in the country, and this multi-purpose area does send some semis rolling by during the day, and the coffee shop conversation is faintly audible in the daytime. But, since the climate control is excellent, we never had the windows open, and we rarely needed to speak above a whisper. Slept embarrassingly late every AM.
It was about perfect for us. Great location, lovely lodging.
We had a fantastic stay in the Fluer de Lis! The property is beautiful, spacious, and great for access to downtown and the main corridors of Dubuque. We came into town for our wedding at Steeple Square (old St. Mary's church) and the rate was better than any of the downtown hotels, and being a full apartment worked great for the bridal party to be at to do make-up/hair/preparations, and proximity to the Millwork District, church, and the Port of Dubuque was great for us (our reception was at Stone Cliff Winery in the old Dubuque Star Brewery). Being up stairs from Charlotte's Coffee house was equally awesome for meeting folks at a great coffee shop and grabbing a brew.
Tim & Cheryl nailed the restoration of the property and the coffee house. Furnishing, bathrooms, hot tub, kitchen, everything was great. Watch your shins on the footboard in the bedroom, it's a little tight in there but you'll still love it. Property was clean and perfect!
We'll be staying there any time we're in town and need a room, and if not, we're still grabbing a cup of coffee!
We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend and were very impressed. The suite was super clean and easy to find. The staff at the coffee shop were very friendly and welcoming and the food was delicious! The location is perfect and was only a short 10 min or less drive from all the area attractions we visited. I would highly recommend this property!
The best way to experience Dubuque is to stay at the Drake House Vacation Rentals, located in the Millwork District, in the heart of downtown Dubuque. We are the perfect alternative to staying in a hotel. Our three suites are all very homey and upscale. When you stay in The Fleur de Lis Suite, you know you're in Dubuque. It has a unique hint of French flavor, after Julien Dubuque, our city's founder, giving you a unique, inviting place to stay. It is fully furnished, including a full kitchen, washer/dryer, two full baths, fireplace, and it's own private deck, which includes a hot tub.The Drake House is located right above Charlotte’s Coffee House, so either you can just go downstairs and enjoy a great cup of coffee and breakfast, or if you really feel like being treated special, you can call down and have it delivered at no extra charge. Staying with us is considered an experience, not just a place to sleep! It is within walking distance to The Voices Art Gallery, bike trails, the Mississippi River, the Gym Fitness Center, several restaurants, and year-round Farmer’s Market.
