Relaxing and great for dogs

  • 4 of 5

Pros - as said in the title, a very relaxing stay in a 'quirky' and very cosy converted chapel. Ideal for our 2 dogs as there are no airs and graces; dogs could go wherever they pleased (though we did use the throws for the sofas as that was only fair!). Beautiful views and lots of public footpaths for great walks. Would have liked to have stayed a bit longer to sample the many recommended pubs. Kevin, our host, was there to greet us and was able to give us any information we needed. We also had a lovely welcome pack including milk, a crusty loaf, eggs and lovely butter!

Cons - could really do with quite a bit of TLC as the place is looking a bit 'jaded'. Garden needs a bit of dog proofing to stop them going into the field beyond as it was just too tempting for them. We put up some wicket fences and other odds and ends that we found in the garden, so that worked well. The field is also private - though there is a public footpath through it that takes you beyond to the lovely walks.

Be aware of the road at the front as well. Relatively quiet except for commuting time when all the cars are in a rush! Also, we were there during a very hot weekend so there were a lot of cyclists coming down the hill at various speeds and they cannot be heard. Front of garden is very secure though - so its just a case of being a bit more careful when going out at certain times of the day.

Owner's Response: Dear Beverley Thank so very much for your comments. Firstly, I must apologise that the property was not up to our normal standard. I in fact did visit the property on the morning of your arrival and advised the owners agent immediately of many of your comments and issues. It is just such a shame that they couldnt be carried out prior to your arrival later that afternoon. IHowever, I do hope we can welcome you back to Staycation Holidays. Many thanks, albeit I am glad you were still able to have a nice time Charles Staycation Holidays

The back garden backs onto a public pathway and bridleways that link you to the peaceful and picturesque village of Uffington and the Berkshire Downs. Or hike up the famous hills of the Vale of the White Horse as it's right on your doorstep. You’re also close to the National Trust Ridgeway for longer hikes. There's some nice pub stops for you too!

This charming and characterful cottage, in the middle of the Vale of the White Horse, is in sight of the famous White Horse of Uffington and just a few minutes drive from the bustling market town of Faringdon. The Fox & Hounds in Uffington is a ten minute walk away and there’s a ‘Good Food’ award-winning pub, The Blowing Stone, which is about half an hour’s walk.

Naturally the Cotswolds are also at hand - in striking distance of The Old Chapel you will find the well known quintessential English villages of Stow-on-the-Wold, Bibury, Cirencester, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Moreton-in-the-Marsh.

The city of Oxford famous the world over for its university and place in history is also half an hour away from The Old Chapel. A bustling cosmopolitan city with its mix of ancient and modern, there is plenty for you to do. Whether it's visiting its Botanical Gardens, museums and libraries, going out for a drink or a meal, taking in a show or shopping till you drop, Oxford really does offer it all. The city also plays host to many festivals and markets throughout the year.

Within easy reach you can encounter the wildlife at the Chimney Meadows Nature Reserve. There is an abundance of quaint, pretty, picturesque villages and historic market towns waiting to be explored. Uffington, home of the museum of Tom Brown's school, Faringdon, Wantage and Kelmscott Manor, home to the William Morris house. Then there's the pretty village of Bampton, used in the filming of Downton Abbey, the medieval riverside town of Witney and the attractive market town of Marlborough.

The beautiful town of Burford on the river Windrush is 21 miles away and the Roman city of Cirencester 26 miles. Discover too Blenheim Palace and the Cotswold Wildlife Park.

Highgrove House one of the homes of Prince Charles is in the village of Tetbury and you will also find Westonbirt Arboretum in the same area, one of the best in the county.

If you fancy something a little more energising why not head to the Cotswold Water Park where you will find lakes that are great for swimming or learning to do some water sports.

It is hard to believe all this is only an hour or so on a direct train from London Paddington to Swindon!
