We are a third of a mile from the main A358 yet our private drive allows us a very sheltered and private location with far reaching views of the Parish. A working dairy farm is next door, besides the cows we have sheep and many other wild animals occasionally visiting. We have a pair of peacocks and March to early May can produce chicks and there is some possible noise associated with this process. There is a woodland walk beside our Leat built in C.1300 and in spring is full of flowers with the River Isle running behind our property which feeds the Leat and former Mill. Manor Farm Bridge is 50 metres away and gives access to the former Stop Gap Railway Line, this had a very important part in the Second World War and now offers a level footpath and interesting walks to Ilminster or Chard with the surrounding countryside offering numerous other walking opportunities. Dogs are welcome but we ask for respect for our neighbours and that includes the livestock and pet cats. Quality bedding and towels are provided, but there is no cleaning or food service included, but this can be arranged at extra cost. All the bedrooms have TV's with the Master Bedroom and Drawing Room (Winter Lounge) having Sky Sports as an added feature.
Our house and grounds are here for our guests to fully enjoy but as this is an old house and next to a working farm there are lots of dangers, so we ask for prudence when enjoying yourselves. A £500 security deposit is required at the point of booking and this also acts as a non-refundable deposit if the reservation is cancelled within 8 weeks of arrival. There is an information pack provided with details of equipment instruction; local information; places to eat and visit etc. The South Coast (Lyme Regis); the large Towns of Taunton (M5 motorway) and Yeovil are all approx 15 minutes away and Crewkerne and Axminster have mainline railway stations and these are both approximately 10 mins away, with the City of Exeter being 40 mins drive. We are right in the very corner of three counties with the Devon and Dorset borders within just a few miles and Cornwall can be reached in just over an hour (traffic permitting).
The Manor was first listed in the record books in 970AD with it being owned by two Saxon Brothers, Godric & Alvric. Following the Norman Conquest it was given by William The Conqueror to Roger de Courcelles, his trusted right hand man. In the 15th century the estate transferred to the ownership of the Poulet family and Sir Anthony Poulet was Captain of the Guard to Elizabeth the First and upon her death became the main protector and advisor to James the First (James VI of Scotland). The family were allowed to use the Royal Crown and we have clay tiles and pottery from the time. James was reputed to have stayed in the area and it is highly possible at this Manor House. We could go on and on but rest assured if you decide to rent this beautiful home you are guaranteed a warm welcome and fantastic base for touring the South West of England.
