In 1794, it became Stonyhurst College which has taught and inspired many artists and writers including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and JRR Tolkien. A historic Grade I listed building set in beautiful grounds, the college has one main church as well as five chapels, four libraries, an observatory and a collection of art, sculpture and relics which are significant to the history of Catholicism.A walker’s paradise, the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is right on the doorstep. Other popular walks include the Tolkien Trail and the Witches Trail around neighbouring Pendle Hill.
