About Harriet Barr

Sadly our owner, Dr. Sarah Forbes passed away in 2011.

Dr. Forbes was a compassionate physician, who was dedicated to her patients becoming Norfolk General's first female resident, and eventually chief resident of OB/GYN. In 1958, she became the first female physician to open a private OB/GYN practice in Newport News, in which she successfully and lovingly practiced.

Dr. Forbes was the first woman to be selected to the board and the first female president of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, where she was honored as a member of the "Wall of Fame" - the first and only woman to be so honored in the club's 65 year history.

Among her many awards were the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Humanitarian Award in 2007 and the Medallion Award, the highest recognition The Boys and Girls Club of America presents to volunteers.

She served as president of the Virginia Peninsula Academy of Medicine, the Newport News Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Newport News Medical Society, and the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Her concern for her patients, affection for animals, and love for community lead her to support many organizations. Cancer Society, the Newport News Medical Society, and the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Her generosity benefited many organizations, including The Family Planning Council, First Baptist Church of Newport News, The Peninsula SPCA, the Mariners' Museum, Riverside Hospital, and Christopher Newport University.

All of our vacation homes are owned by Dr. Forbes' Estate which continues her legacy by using our profits to make regular donations to the charities she loved.

We take care of the houses like she would have wanted.

Great location but an older house

  • 4 of 5

The location of this property was great and the staff was great to work with. The house, however, is very dated. There are no exhaust fans in the bathrooms, it was very hard to regulate the a/c (once we got it working properly) in different rooms. Some were very warm while some were very cold. I was not aware that there was no TV in two of the bedrooms. The kitchen is very small. And there was a $200 cleaning fee included yet we had to sweep the floors before we left. The floors are older so it was very hard to get the sand from between the cracks in the wood floors. It would have been nice to have a larger ice maker. This is advertised as a private walkway to the beach yet you share the walkway with two other houses so it was not as easy to access and we could not leave our belongings near the beach like we would have liked to. The house has lots of history and lots of charm and I guess I have just gotten spoiled by staying in newer houses. We did have a great time, though, in spite of a couple of rainy days.

Great location but property a little dated

  • 3 of 5

Pros: Beautiful location situated next to other house rentals. This house is directly on the beach which was a big draw. The beach was terrific; you cannot see the ocean from the house unless you go on the upper floor and stretch on top of the balcony. We took our 5 pound yorkie but couldn't use the dog run because the fence had pretty big gaps. A very large dog, like a lab, would have been fine with the dog run. Our parents are disabled so the elevator was quite convenient and eased the stress of lots of stairs as well as packing our belongings in and out. We used the WIFI and it was fast enough for us, no issues.

Cons: The temperature setting kept defaulting back to 75, which meant upstairs was well into the 80s. I debated between average and good for the above reasons. Not having quality air conditioning on the master bedroom level was a big factor in this rating. Overall, the furnishings were very dated and weathered (those outside). We rented two umbrellas and chairs. The chairs were fine; I would not recommend the umbrellas. They are the kind that stick several inches into the sand and with much wind are fairly useless. We brought our own canopy which worked perfectly.

We purchased the amenity package. We were a bit surprised that we had to make our own beds. We prepaid a $200 cleaning fee but have no idea what that was for because there was no daily service. We also had to take the trash cans to the curb on trash night, which was a first for us in a rental!

Suggested improvements we would make include updated living room furniture, addition of an ice maker, providing trash bags (there was 1 kitchen bag already in the trash can), Blue Ray player (there is a DVD player).
