Overview

About the property

A fabulous setting for a truly inviting family house. The farm is approached up a winding track and idyllic walks start from the door

It'll do you a world of good to stay on this small family farm, surrounded by soft hills and pastures. Your hosts are Charles and his Dutch wife Truus, who farm 60 organic acres. Now they have converted the big handsome oast house and it's perfect for a family of four (though six can squeeze in). On arrival you're welcomed warmly with bread, eggs and homemade cake, and maybe a bottle of farm cider; in season you can buy beef, lamb and vegetables. Downstairs opens to the dining room, kitchen, bedroom and family bathroom, while the sitting room and second bedroom are a hop up the open-tread stairs. Each bedroom is super-cosy, and circular, being in the roundel, and the decor is country traditional, with quarry tiles and wooden floors, period tapestries and open-stone walls, and the old hop press upstairs. As for the area, it'll keep you busy. You can visit Sissinghurst, Battle and Bodiam Castle, then walk to Rudyard Kipling's house along the banks of the Dudwell, or pop off to the Wheel Inn for a pint and a pie. Back home? A wood-burner, books, DVDs, satellite TV.

Full of peace and beauty

  • 5 of 5

Slow travel at it's finest. Waking up to make coffee in a sun drenched kitchen looking out at a dogwood in bloom and beautiful roses in the courtyard. Walk among the sheep before breakfast and take in the views of the gentle fields and old hardwoods. Song birds, soft baying of sheep and occasional rooster crows make up the daily soundtrack. Truus and Charles are truly gracious and welcoming. Couldn't have asked for a better way to help my mom and dad explore our roots.

Beautiful home in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We had the most brilliant time staying in Charles and Truus's oast house. The accommodation was unique. Spacious, beautifully laid out, attractively furnished and decorated. Our hosts were most welcoming, and we were delighted to have the privilege of staying on their property. The farm is at the bottom of a little lane in deepest Sussex, a short walk from Kipling's home, with hills and woods and farms and wildflower meadows all around. We strolled among cows, past chickens and sheep. There was a childlike pleasure in sleeping in circular bedrooms, and in discovering that the front door was a half door, that you could lean on and look out at the courtyard like a farmer.

beautiful place, very friendly owners

  • 5 of 5

We had a splendid week with our four children. It is a very beautiful place, beautifully restored and maintained by the loving hands of Charles and Truus. The farm on its own is a very pleasant place to stay and play, and there is lots to do in the close environment. Charles and Truus will tell you all about it. We'll definitely return to spend our holiday here.

Kind regards,

Ilse and Matthijs, Dax, Liv, Raf and Zev

Lovely cottage in a beautiful rural location

  • 5 of 5

Lovely well equipped cottage in a beautiful rural location. Very helpful and welcoming owners. Wood burning stove was fun to use. It was enjoyable to see all the farm animals and to be able to walk around the farm (although muddy unsurprisingly). Loved the smell of the hay - brought back memories! Heathfield nearby has ample supermarkets and restaurants and there are plenty of attractions nearby. Would highly recommend for a getaway.
