Guestbook comments from the manager

"Lovely comfortable stay for our return visit after a great short stay last year. Had to return as such a lovely house in lovely location. Sun went on its holiday at the same time I think but didn't dampen the beauty of the area, lots of places to see, walk. Find the tea shop at Whatstandwell following the canal walk - lovely. Pub grub at the Boat Inn was plentiful."

Well appointed, spacious, comfortable Cottage with all mod cons. More than lived up to expectations.

The Cottage is on the Wharf on the Cromford canal and very convenient for Bakewell (Haddon Hall and Chatsworth), Matlock, Buxton, Chesterfield and Ashbourne and we visited them all! We were easily able to walk into Cromford and ate in the pleasant dining room of the Greyhound Hotel twice. Other evenings we took advantage of the cafe on the Wharf a few yards away and had very enjoyable food from a variety of pasta, pizza and salads on the menu and as they were licensed a glass of wine too which was a real bonus. Round the corner from us in the other direction is Willersley Castle Hotel where we were able to relax and enjoy the views over the River Derwent over Morning Coffee - well worth the walk up the hill, I must say. The history and heritage centre on the doorstep together with numerous walks down the canal made this a memorable holiday in an ideal central location in beautiful scenery. There are many places and things that we did not get round to doing so would be happy to return in the future if the Cottage is not booked up completely. If you have the Gardeners’ World two for one discount card be sure to bring it with you, as there are places to visit nearby that take it.

Fabulous cottage

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage with everything you could possibly need. Arrived to a bottle of wine, cakes and biscuits from the owner. Very comfortable rooms. Perfect position for walks along the canal and a visit to Masson Mill.

Set on the old wharf, virtually by the side of the canal, there are lots and lots of adventures to have in and around Sir Richard Arkwright's industrial revolution village. Cromford Mill will transport you back in time. Masson Mills with their heritage centre are well worth a visit. Save an afternoon to explore the old streets and alleyways in the village or to wander along the leafy canal feeding the ducks.

Walk in the opposite direction and you are soon in Matlock Bath with its little Switzerland gorge, cable cars, caverns, interesting shops and riverside prom. This is the true 'gateway' to the Peak District with its myriad of attractions like Chatsworth House, famous Bakewell, sparkling river valleys and breathtaking grit stone edges. A pint in one of the village pubs or a steak in the Market Place Restaurant is a must when you return.

Nearest pub - Cromford 0.5 miles.

Nearest village shop - Cromford 0.5 miles.

Nearest supermarket - Matlock 2.5 miles.
