lovely place but needs some TLC

  • 4 of 5

Overall we had a fabulous stay and that will be our abiding memory. We were lucky to have great weather and spent a lot of time on the lovely terrace, and were rarely indoors other than to sleep.

The cottage was extremely clean and it was nice to have the wine and chocolates on arrival. Thoughtful touches like washer / dishwasher tablets also really helped. Our only gripes really were that the shower at the top of the house just wouldn't get warm & seemed to have poor pressure. Also with a cottage that size, a bigger fridge would be better - we were just 2 couples but struggled to fit everything in. But these were just niggles really. Barbara was so lovely.

It was wonderful in every way

  • 5 of 5

We had two great weeks in Bakewell. The cottage is in a perfect location for all the sights in the Peak District. Bakewell is a delightful village, and Church Cottage made our vacation perfect.

Wonderful cottage in Bakewell

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Church cottage in early June. The cottage is in a wonderful area of Bakewell with its on parking stall behind the cottage. From the cottage it is a two minute walk into the town of Bakewell where there are many traditional British pubs to choose from. The All Saints Church is immediately across the street with its two hundred plus year old cemetery. Bakewell is minutes to both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, both worth the visit. Staying in the neighborhood provided us the opportunity to meet and talk with the locals, who are welcoming, charming, and very easy to talk to. Barbara the caretaker is a wonderful host and made arrival and departure simple and easy. I would highly recommend a visit to Bakewell and the Church House a must stay on your visit.

What a lovely place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful property in Bakewell. The property is decorated and furnished to a lovely standard and it's equipped with all you could need for a holiday.

The location is terrific. Located opposite the church, you have beautiful views across the churchyard and the blossom trees (in full bloom in May!) to the front and views across to the surrounding hills to the rear. We were lucky enough to spend a warm, sunny bank holiday weekend sitting on the patio outside the back kitchen door and it was really charming to see the church spire peeking across the neighbours' roofs!

Despite it being a very short walk to the end of the street where you find yourself in the centre of Bakewell, the property was quiet and peaceful and it felt like a lovely break away from home.

Bakewell itself provided all we needed - a large Co-op, pubs, cafes, restaurants, nice shops - and walks along the river to Haddon Hall and along the Monsal Trail.

We would definitely love to stay in this property again next time we head to the Peak District!

Quirky cottage in the centre of Bakewell.

  • 5 of 5

Perfect 'family with teenagers' location right in the centre of Bakewell and a versitile base to explore the delights of Derbyshire. Bakewell has lots of restaurants in the town centre to try (top tip being The Peacock Inn) plus a Co-op for supplies which provided fun in hunting round the bargain counter @ 6pm (discount time!) for the following day's packed lunch! Church Cottage is a little drafty (well it is 200 years old plus it snowed whilst we were there), but once the heating came on and with a log fire it certainly kept us warm. In addition, the chiming of the church bells was not a favourite of teenagers keen for a lie in. Very quirky in layout, but perfect for everyone to find a quiet space to 'veg out' and read, watch TV, surf the net or do some timed GCSE mock exams. Located one mile from the start of the Monsal Trail it was also great for an early rising Dad keen to get out on his bike in the morning! Definitely try the Bakewell PUDDING and NOT the TART. So good!

The cottage also has a perfect setting with its front windows overlooking the church green and lovely garden views across to the Derwent Valley hills. A minute or so's stroll from the cottage door takes you down into town where there are lots and lots of country-style shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs galore.

With many of Derbyshire's holiday attractions so close to Bakewell you ought to plan a trip or two to the quieter parts of the Peak. Marvel at the well-dressings in villages like Tideswell, spot the 'lady in the lake' in Howden Dam or wonder if you can really believe your eyes as you look out from Froggatt Edge over wave after wave of Peak District hills.
