About Brigitte Lefèvre

Architect and having fallen in love with these old stones in a magnificent site, I created my accommodation in my image, modernism in the tradition and then fitted out hosts' house there following the same ideology. I would adore discussing architecture with you!

If it pleases you, I can organize you a tasting of some of 400 Belgian beers (but tell it on time).

Old big traveler, to discover your culture will enchant me.

Brigitte Lefèvre purchased this barn in 2004

What makes this barn unique

You will stay in an unique heritage area of Wallonia. Even for us, to live in this place looks like every day holidays so much the landscape change by being always magnificent. The barn was built with the stones of a roman vicus which we let visible so you will feel a authentic atmosphere in each room.

Perfect base for exploring

  • 5 of 5

We choose Brigitte's guest house as a base for exploring southern Belgium during our Trappist Brewers tour of Belgium. The guest house was perfect for our group of 5 , a mix of old and new as described, with just enough space, ping pong and bikes, bbq grill and washing machine, and of course Wi-Fi (which worked well even with 5 devices at once). Brigitte was a wonderful host and provided plenty of information on the area. Nice walk to town, nice quiet area but well located to explore the region.

Left it cleaner than we arrived ! 45 euros for cleaning is a joke !

  • 3 of 5

Initial contact with owner all seemed good and thought we had found the ideal retreat.

How wrong were we.

The owner on arrival seemed on arrival ok ,but seemed a bit disappointed that we were going to Germany on our next day after arrival.

She seemed to come up with many tourist attractions trying to steer us towards them everyday.

Monday morning we could tell exactly why !

The builders arrived to continue with the renovation of the building below. I was woken up at 0730hrs to a huge noise of a wooden door being slid open on a track below my bedroom window. I hear loud voices then look out the window to the rear and see a builder weeing against the hedge. Great start to a not so relaxing week.

Everyday we experienced this. Monday I complained after there was a kango drill going flat out for 2 hrs. It was like a warzone.

The kango stopped, but there was excessive noise all week. Another apartment conversion for the money making machine at the expense of others I found bang out of order. Essential works , yes I get it ie water leak to be fixed. But not when you expect a quiet holiday as described.

In my opinion this apartments tranquillity will be spoilt by additional apartment being added. So if you expect piece forget this place and do your homework.

The surrounding area is beautiful with other gites available.

Good luck !

This is an honest opinion and experience of our stay.

We waited to get our deposit returned first before this review !

Owner's Response: Most travelers come to visit Wallonia. We always make sure to welcome them personally and determine their interests and needs in order to advise them as best as we possibly can. I do understand how annoying the noisy arrival of the workmen was. I wasn't expecting them either ! Managing construction works is a tough job and it's very difficult to turn down the workers who come to complete their jobs, even when it's unexpected. I made sure to give them instructions for the following works and I have the feeling everything was soon settled. The works are coming to an end, no more noise is expected. It was a one-off event for which we apologize. As for the apartment under construction that we designed for two persons with reduced mobility, it is meant for our personal use only when we are older. There is no reason to believe it would be turned into a vacation home. As an architect, I took all the suitable precautions to offer the best acoustic insulation between both dwellings. Moreover, outside areas will remain private to each one of them. I am so sorry that the cleaning wasn't good ; in the unlikely event should it be inadequate, the best way is to inform us as soon as possible because we can fix that immediately. We shall pay careful attention to that point. In addition to cleaning up after the stay, the cleaning price covers regular cleaning of windows, furniture and soft furnishings, the purchase of cleaning products and refuse collection charges . Regarding the deposit, please note it is witheld by VRBO that refunds it after 15 days (we only have 7 days to stop the payment). We cannot oppose that. Thank you for your review which makes us progressing ...

Well-equiped, spacious, stylish apartment in the beautiful Belgian countryside

  • 5 of 5

Me, my wife and my 3 year old son had a great time here. The apartment was a cool and characterful mix of modern and old fashioned, with original brick work, a 1960s American-style fridge and an old-fashioned radio on the one hand, but good central heating, wifi and a TV on the other.

The apartment is very spacious, with separate dining and lounge areas, 2 decent sized bedrooms and a whole downstairs garage area to store your bikes (or you can just borrow the owners') or play ping pong! Outside there's loads of space to park and out the back, from the lounge area and main bedroom windows, you overlook a row of trees and a field - really peaceful, we saw only one person out there all week.

Out the front, you overlook the courtyard, where there a small number of other properties, including that of the owners - always reassuring to know they are around when you're somewhere quite rural.

So, the property is excellent and we'd definitely stay there again. What about this area of the country? You'll have a car with you presumably, or else you'll struggle to get there - within an hour's drive there are dozens of lovely little towns and cities to visit, often in dramatic, river-side locations with a castle or fort to dominate proceedings! We visited Dinant, Namur and Durbuy and all were well worth a visit. You could also get to Brussels, Liège, Spa, Han-sur-Lesse and even Luxembourg, Aachen and Mastricht over the borders within an hour and a half, so there's tonnes of worthy places to visit. Just pottering around in the countryside is very nice round there and we took an easy stroll into the nearby village of Ocquier to eat at the village restaurant (Cap des Trois Provinces) - heavy, but tasty food there and as always in Belgium an awesome beer list. Take a torch if walking back in the dark as understandably

there's no street lighting.

There are no downsides that would be fair to pin on this apartment or area (it doesn't have Florida's weather, but you knew that!). Highly recommended as a fantastic base to explore an underrated part of Europe. An easy drive down from Calais/Dunkirk too.

A perfect place for us

  • 5 of 5

We chose this place for a 5 day stay before flying out of Brussels. We knew very little about the location, but the place fit our needs size-wise and economically, and we just liked the way it looked. We could not have chosen better if we'd exhaustively researched it! Brigitte and Philippe are perfect hosts, warm and welcoming but also leaving us plenty of privacy. The house is a welcoming "hang out" space, perfect for our teenagers. Table tennis and the available bikes kept the kids entertained so the adults could enjoy a glass of wine or some local beer. Mmm, the beer is not to be missed! There is lots of agriculture in the region, with local beer and cheese, local berries and other treats available in stores and on restaurant menus. The nearest restaurant is in Ocquier, about 20 minutes' leisurely walk from this property, and features locally grown foods. The nearby bakery is fantastic as well.

This area does not appear to get many visits from Americans. Brigitte told us that we were only her second American guests in a decade of renting the property. But everyone we encountered was friendly and patient with our halting, broken high school French. We had a wonderful experience and look forward to staying here again someday.

Owner's Response: Mark and his family were very kind and took great care of our guesthouse. It was a real pleasure to have a "special Belgian beers" aperitif during which we spoke about our respective countries and cultures. We look forward for welcoming them next time.

Mooi verblijf met gastvrije eigenaren

  • 5 of 5
