Chalet Papillon is a comfortable semi detached chalet situated on the Route de la Bechigne, one of the main arteries of the town of Châtel and on the bus route. The chalet is part of a group of 4 similar chalets which are situated on a bend in the road, facing open fields, adjacent to a mountain stream. In the summer the fields are covered in wild flowers and cows, in the winter our children use them for tobogganing.

On arrival at the chalet, it is possible to park adjacent to the chalet for easy unloading. There is space to park two cars. The main entrance leads into an open plan living area and kitchen. This offers glorious views of the valley and the Linga mountain. There is an open fire and comfortable seating, with two settees, chairs and bean bags.

Indoor entertainment. Wifi is available and there is a TV and DVD player, a CD/Tape/Radio player and a large selection of card and board games to suit all ages. We operate a 'book trading' facility so feel free to take a book from our selection but please leave one in return.

We bought the Chalet in 2006 and have never regretted it. Rob is a farmer and can't go on summer holidays because of the harvest, so we went skiing and our love of skiing grew. The children have skied since they could put boots on, and our son Ben is now an instructor. I am Lizzy, I am a physiotherapist and between us we try to ski 4-5 times a year. We are good friends with our French neighbours who have lived there for about 5 years. I used to come out to Chatel every summer before the children left home and they often said they almost preferred summer until I got roped in to helping at home. There is a lovely 'chilled' ambiance around the town, the weather is usually sunny and there is lots to do. We never want to come home. purchased this chalet in 2006

Why chose Châtel

This property is a home from home. All children who have visited settle right in. They can play outside and they are safe, they can go downstairs and watch DVDs, or set up 'risk' or monopoly for the whole family to join in. There are sledges in the chalet and there is even table tennis equipment downstairs which can be played with the table fully extended. The open fire has substantial fire guard but children like to be involved in setting and tending the fire which can be supervised while cooking is being done.

What makes this chalet unique

We fell in love with this chalet because it has the feel of a much bigger place. It is in a quiet location, but near amenities like the bus routes and ski hire shop. We enjoy the 10 min walk to town if we decide to eat out and have discovered various 'short cuts'. The walk home is always down hill! The town has a traditional feel with good restaurants and bars. We have everything we need especially now that the town has a swimming pool and spa.

Well located, well equipt, in beautiful location

Chalet was clean and tidy on arrival. It has a lovley communal space with balcony overlooking the valley.

Overall this chalet was very well equipt with good wifi, a cosy open fire and good kitchen facilities.

A fantastastic region to visit - loads to do. Far more than we could fit into a week! This chalet was located a short walk from the town centre which had a great atmosphere.

We'll be back!

Winter in Chatel

Châtel sits in the middle of two ski regions. Behind is Super Châtel which links to the Swiss resorts of Morgins and Torgon, to the left is the Linga and Pre le Joux which link to the massive ski fields of Avoriaz, Morzine and the Portes du Soleil circuit. With 650 kms (406 miles) of piste available, this is arguably the worlds biggest lift linked ski area. The resorts' proximity to Lac Leman means it benefits from the regular snow deposits as moisture from the lake precipitates out of the rising air hitting the mountains. This phenomenon endures late into spring allowing warm sunny days in the snow.

Snow for everyone

The ski area behind the town in Super Châtel has beautiful picturesque slopes . There is a board park and a time trial area for those who want to play and some lovely traditional mountain restaurants for those who prefer extended lunches in companionable surroundings.

Off Piste

The resort offers enormous possibilities to ski/board off piste.

This area is one of Europe's top snowboarding destinations. Apart from the extensive snow fields there is the famous ‘super park’ at Les Crossets featured in many snow sport magazines and a CHAMPIONSHIP HALF PIPE IN AVORIAZ.

Cross country skiing

The Abondance valley boast 50 kms of cross country ski routes along picturesque tracks by the river Drance and into the forest. There are a variety of difficulties to be attempted.

Ski schools

There are several ski schools and private instructors in Châtel and Pre le Joux. Pre booking is advised at busy times. A complete list is available from the tourist board, but a selection of services are listed on our website.

ESF Ecole de Ski Francais is the most prolific ski school throughout France. It benefits from the economies of scale of a national organisation and there are usually plenty of classes available from both Pre La Joux and Super Chatel.

ESI Ecole de Ski International This is a multi lingual school which teaches in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Russian.


British Alpine ski and snowboard school.

Blue Chilli Ski School Rory and his partner are English nationals who have lived in Chatel for many years and are bilingual. He runs anything from ski instruction and board instruction to off piste guiding.

Lift passes

Lift passes are available from kiosks adjacent to the lifts. They are credit card sized passes that go into a pocket and are scanned through the outer clothing.

Equipment Hire

There is a Sun set ski shop opposite in the Chalet D'Angeles.

Swimming- Forme D'O Aquatic Centre There is a new aquatic centre with an indoor/outdoor pool, sauna and a fitness suite.

Ice Skating Available every evening at Lac Vonne. Equipment is available for hire. Check times with the tourist office. After an extended period of sub zero temperatures the rink is set up on the lake.

Bowling There is a bowling alley situated behind the Vieux Four restaurant.
