We have recently added new gas grill and grilling tools to Serenity Suite for our guests use.
Relax and restore as you listen to soothing native bird songs (note: there are no cogui frogs in this part of the village, which are very noisy critters)
There is a cozy gas fireplace, Sally's extensive lending library and 2 beds in this 2 room suite with covered porch.
Extra single futon available, if needed.
We have comfy 'hapi' coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!

You will love this place!
Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.
Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 40 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.
The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.
Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.
Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 34nd year.
Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.
Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977
Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.
The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.
Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.
Beautiful, peaceful rain forest retreat.
We stayed three nights at the Volcano Village Serenity Suite and we absolutely loved it. Sally and Jeffrey have made a very homey space in the middle of the rain forest. It is absolutely perfect. You will not regret staying here. We could have stayed here for a whole week. It was always a pleasure to come 'home' to this place at the end of a long day hiking at the volcano, and their recommendations for things to do and places to eat were spot on!
When we return to Hawaii, we will definitely stay with Sally and Jeffrey again. This place feels like a home away from home.
The serenity suite was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was perfect. The location was great for exploring Volcano National Park (only about 3 miles away). Cute and cozy! The grounds were beautiful - full of large tree ferns and mosses.
This was a great place to stay while up at the Volcano park area. Wonderfull hospitality, waking up in the morning in a fern forest.
The Serenity Suite is conveniently located to the national park and Jeffrey and Sally were exceptional guides as to how to navigate seeing all that the park has to offer.
The breakfast provided was delicious and plentiful. We couldn't finish it all in two days.
The suite was ideal for escaping crowds, cooling off, and catching a quick rest before venturing out to see the volcano at night. The birds sang sweetly while we napped in the cool shade.
Great HomeAway find!
We stayed here for the full week. We flew from L.A. to Hilo and drove our rental car at night relying on detailed instructions from Sally and Jeffrey. When we arrived we were dead tired and dreamt of bed and nothing else. In the morning we had our chance to see the property at day light.
The property was just perfect fit for our needs, the rain forest surrounding us combined with all the noises made by birds and frogs was truly giving use sense of peace of mind. Whatever energy we spent hiking on the trails in Volcano National Pare we have regained each following morning. The sleeping arrangement was very good as we had nice view of the rain forest right in front of our bed. Sadly we didn't have much time to use the other room, we would wish to have more time to spend with all the books on shelfs waiting to be opened. We don't watch TV at home and we didn't find the need to watch it during our stay. What we needed though was reliable internet to keep in touch with our family and friends leaving in few far far away places, I must say I was impressed with the speed of upload and download of the files, the Face Time on our phone worked quite well, just like the voip app on the phone. The location of this property is very good, driving by car it is just a little less than 1 hour to Hilo, couple of minutes to National Park, 2 hours drive to Kona.
Oh, the owners are very very friendly and helpful in any way, no need to be shy, just talk to them and you will see it for yourself.
I think, me and my wife would highly recommend this property as your Hawaiian destination, the adventure is waiting and starts right here. Stop dreaming, start acting, there are not too many places left like that.

No Pets. I highly suggest at least a three night stay in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.
Please read our reviews to know how special this place is.
Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
