Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.
Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 37 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.
The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.
Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.
Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 32nd year.
Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.
Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977
Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.
The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.
Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.
Very friendly host and an experience to stay in the middle of a rainforest which gets pitch black at night ;)
We really loved staying here with our 15 month old. The rental is clean and inviting and the hosts included a tasty breakfast (we learned that a wedge of lemon in your guava is amazing).
Sally and Jeffrey were so welcoming and went above and beyond by childproofing and including lots of great board books and toddler toys so our kiddo was happy as could be.
Between the hammock on the deck, the beautiful garden, and the cozy indoor gas fireplace this entire space is designed for true relaxation. We were so busy at Volcano National Park during the day that we didn't get enough time to sit and enjoy the fabulous space Sally and Jeffrey have created.
When checking out, they allowed us to leave our food in the fridge past checkout time and then provided a cooler to take with us when we left. Sally also suggested we take a book that I was only halfway done with. They truly treat you like friends!
This was a great find. It is up a small dirt road just outside the "commercial area" (a couple of convenience stores, a gas station and a few restaurants) of Volcano Village. Incredibly handy to Volcano National Park. The suite is "sweet". You have a porch with a table and chairs and a hammock. There is a second hammock in the garden just steps away. You are in the middle of a rain forest with the lush green scenery and bird noises that make it so special. Sally met us when we arrived and gave us the lay of the land. She had a delicious and generous breakfast in the refrigerator for our first morning. And then she faded into the background giving us privacy but letting us know that we could contact her about anything. One day we came back from the park to find that she had left us a bowl of fresh picked fruit. She left a notebook with recommended things to do and see and places to eat. The suite has a tv, vcr and a variety of movies. But even better is the collection of books that she has for you to read. Thank goodness we stayed for 4 nights so that I could get through a 400 page novel. We didn't find anything lacking. It even had a hairdryer. We would totally recommend it to anyone wanting to get away from it all.
This place is unique. It is placed in a lush rainforest and provides privacy and a very cosy atmosphere.
The hosts were wounderful and in a very positive way different!
You will find books, informations, DVDs, a comforting stove and whatever you might need. The condo is well equipped and breakfast for the first day, which finally lasted for 2 days, was provided.
By staying in Vulcano you will always be ahead of the crowds that visit the park and it is well worth to consider to stay 2-3 nights in order to see the night glow of the lava upon arrival, the park in daylight and then finally Hilo and the seaentry of the lava from the Kalapana coast.
The time here was just perfect....thank you!
My husband and I loved this cozy retreat , it was a perfect home base for viewing volcanic sites. We were very fortunate to see the crater at a most active stage. we loved the lovely little gas stove that kept us toasty.
I was most impressed with all the details, the art the furniture, the little special things that have been collected over time. There was no detail missed, from our warm greeting to books and binoculars, we loved it all.
Thank you so much

Our stay at the VVSS was all we could have hoped for. We loved the location in the rain forest and the proximity to Volcanos National Park. As others have mentioned, the space is cozy and homey. When I read "cosy" in the other reviews, I was worried that it would be a bit cramped, but it wasn't at all. Although our stay was brief, we got to make use of both the gas stove and the private porch. The breakfast was great! Locally themed and very thoughtfully assembled. We were contacted right away when a widespread power outage hit and were delivered (a very cool) hurricane lamp. I'd recommend this suite without hesitation and hope to visit it again myself.

No Pets. During the 2016 holiday season there will be a three night minimum stay. I suggest at least a three night stay (although our minimum stay is 2 days after December 31, 2016) in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.
Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
