We have comfy 'hapi' coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!

You will love this place!
Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.
Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 37 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.
The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.
Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.
Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 32nd year.
Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.
Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977
Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.
The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.
Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.
We knew we found the perfect place to stay when the hosts greeted us warmly in the driveway and our 2-year old began to immediately refer to them as "Grandma and Grandpa". Serenity Suite was just as advertised, a perfectly serene retreat from Honolulu city life that provided a great home base for exploring Volcano National Park. The VNP hikes, Visitor center, and Jagger Observatory are just a short drive away (10-15 minutes). On the second night, we took a longer drive to Kalapana (1 hour) and biked out to see the lava flowing into the ocean after dark. While the excursions were dramatic and exciting, the suite was restful and cozy - the perfect contrast. The hosts went above and beyond to accommodate us, including providing a "Pack and Play" for our toddler, and other amenities that either we requested or they thoughtfully provided on their own. I highly recommend them and their Serenity Suite.
First, the pictures do not do this property justice! The suite is extremely well appointed, furnished, and thoughtfully designed. Everything is right where you need it. Enjoying the hammock outside in the evening and need a pillow or throw blanket? They're right in arms reach. Traveled late and never got a chance to stop for groceries? Sally & Jeffrey provide you withe a lovely local breakfast for your first morning. Dozens of books to read or peruse on every subject you can imagine. Helpful info about exploring the area. Extremely clean. Unbeatable view of the fern and mossy forest, sounds of birds during the day and insects at night. You feel so secluded. I wish I had stayed longer. I was only there 2 nights and all I wanted to do was stay in my little retreat, but I'd already made a lot of plans for exploring the island! This place will pull you in like a warm blanket and you'll never want to leave :)
Nice location: in the rain forest and within few minutes from all the restaurants in Volcano Village. Feels like personal space.
Great owners: They were very kind and helpful, suggested places to see and things to do without asking for it. They were very concerned to make our stay there a memorable experience. And yes, it is!
Excellent property: The property is well maintained and adequately stocked. Breakfast provided for the first morning was very generous. We enjoyed the books in the library.
Wife and I stayed here for two nights, wish it was more:) What a great, quiet and cozy place. The difference between this place and other VRBO's we have stayed at are the owners. Sally and Jeffrey are the BEST, they take great pride ensuring their guests are happy and think of everything. Everything from the breakfast left for us, fresh ground coffee, maps of the area....and so much more.
Can't wait to bring our kids there in the future (hopefully near future).
We have stayed in a lot of vacation rentals, and this definitely ranks up there as the best. Sally is the sweetest - she met us upon arrival, gave us a tour and even let our daughters taste some edible flowers from the garden. We felt so welcomed from the start - a personalized welcome sign by the door, a reassurance that they love the sound of kids' giggles, a delicious local breakfast in the fridge, and Sally even left a box of chocolate macademias when she found out it was my husband's birthday. The suite itself was very clean, had everything we needed and was plenty of room for our family of four. The setting was incredible. We just loved feeling like we were in the rain forest, wandering the paths through the property, and relaxing in the hammock at night under a canopy of stars. We were glad we had a few nights to enjoy this area, and actually wished we could have stayed longer. The location was very convenient to the national park, which was also amazing. Seeing lava flowing into the ocean, steam pouring out of steam vents throughout the park, the night glow of red from the caldera - definitely memories we will never forget. Mahalo, Sally, for your wonderful hospitality! We hope we can return some day.
We enjoyed our stay at this lean, cosy and comfortable place in the rainforest. There was even a perfect breakfast waiting in the fridge for us. It's very close to the N.P. - go watch the glow!
It was perfect and if it wouldn't be so far away, we would definitely return! Thanks for all

No Pets. I suggest at least a three night stay (although our minimum stay is 2 days) in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $10 fee.
Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
