About the property

Two room suite with covered porch and private entry Hammock on porch.

Your private entrance leads to our sweet Serenity Suite in the heart of quiet Volcano Village. Our property is on one acre of land that we have been gardening and landscaping in a native forest for 40 years. You will find quiet and privacy and as you stroll there are benches throughout the property.

Relax in either of 2 hammocks, one under the native Lehua Ohia trees and Hapu'u ferns and the other on your private covered porch.

We have recently added new gas grill and grilling tools to Serenity Suite for our guests use.

Relax and restore as you listen to soothing native bird songs (note: there are no cogui frogs in this part of the village, which are very noisy critters)

There is a cozy gas fireplace, Sally's extensive lending library and 2 beds in this 2 room suite with covered porch.

We think this vacation rental is ideal for 2 adults or a family. It is not always ideal for 4 adults as there is one queen bed and one double bed, so if you are especially tall or large the double bed might be too small for you. We want everyone to be most comfortable while staying in Volcano Village Serenity Suite!

Extra single futon available, if needed.

We have comfy 'hapi' coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!

A generous locally sourced breakfast is provided on the first morning in your suite. It will all be in the fridge when you arrive. Our water is excellent, so don't buy any bottled water.

Wonderful Freshly ground coffee, tea assortments, hot chocolate and popcorn are provided.

We are extremely close to ALL that you need: 3 minutes to the nearby stores and restaurants and 5 minutes to the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Our sweet neighborhood is also a joy to stroll in, so bring your walking shoes.

You will love this place!

Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.

Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 40 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.

The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.

About Sally & Jeffey Mermel

Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.

Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 34nd year.

Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.

Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977

Why Sally & Jeffey Mermel chose Volcano Village

Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.

The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.

What makes this house unique

Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.

A generous breakfast is provided the first morning and will be waiting for you in the refrigerator. NOTE: Minimal cooking . There is no stove or oven but there is a gas grill. Three general stores are nearby. Two in the village and one in the National Park. IT IS BEST to do grocery shopping in either Hilo or Kona prior to coming to Volcano. Farmers Market on Sundays at Cooper Center" community center Hours are 6:30 to 9:30 am! it's always appreciated by visitors. Although there are 2 general stores here they are small. Best grocery buying should be done in Hilo or Kona. Lots to choose from there. Nine Nice restaurants are in Volcano with a variety of good food. Seven are in the Village and two are in the National Park,

Rainforest fairytale

  • 5 of 5

Sally was so sweet and the rooms were perfect for our 2 night stay but I just can't get over how beautiful the property is! All we wanted to do once we got here was sit in one of the 2 hammocks and read or listen to the birds. All the little trails were so cute! We were super close to the Volcano park and just 30 min from the black sand beach. I definitely want to come back!

You'll wish you could stay longer!

Can't recommend this place enough! We have stayed at many many AirBNBs and HomeAway vacation rentals in our travels around the world -- Sally and Jeffrey were the most generous and thoughtful hosts we've ever had! This is a truly cozy home away from home in the middle of the rainforest -- a perfect base for anyone planning to spend time at Volcanoes National Park. They have everything you need for your adventures and more! We stayed 5 nights and wish we could've stayed longer!

Cozy Oasis

  • 5 of 5

The perfect spot to enjoy the Park, and come back to at the end of the day. Sally and Jeffrey have thought of all the little details for your comfort. This cottage has so much charm and you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle. It was too bad we did not stay longer.

A wonderful and peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with Sally and Jeffrey for the first half of a Big Island vacation. We had full days but I wish we had carved out more time to spend at this lovely spot. They really put a lot of thought into stocking the home with nice to haves - umbrellas, flash lights, sunscreen, maps, extra blankets, etc. Add these to a lovely location, incredibly sweet hosts, and a comfy bed and a hot shower with good water pressure and I spent the second half of our stay (in a hotel on the opposite side of the island) wishing we were back with our lovely hosts. Thank you for a magical time!!!

Rainforest paradise

  • 5 of 5

Sally and Jeffrey are the most welcoming hosts, and we loved our stay at their lovely property. The rainforest and gardens are beautiful, especially when it’s all you can see out the windows and from the hammocks. The place is so cozy, especially with the gas fireplace in the sitting area, and there is an extensive collection of books that you could spend weeks going through. The breakfast they provided was thoughtful and yummy. They have thought of everything you might need while visiting the area and have lots of recommendations. The location is super convenient for exploring Volcanoes National Park. We had activity packed days and wish we had a little more time just to relax in this serenity suite. What a little gem.

No Pets. I highly suggest at least a three night stay in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.

Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
