Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.
Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 37 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.
The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.
Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.
Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 32nd year.
Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.
Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977
Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.
The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.
Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.
We were delighted with our stay at the Serenity Suite. The two-room suite is absolutely lovely (as a book lover, I appreciated the many interesting books on its multiple shelves), and we especially enjoyed our leisurely mornings drinking coffee on the porch looking out at the lush backyard and listening to the birds sing. Sally left us a delicious breakfast for the first morning. She and Jeff couldn't have been nicer, were very helpful with tips about how best to sightsee and eat in the area, and - as has been noted by other reviews - also respectful of privacy. It was a blissfully quiet four-night stay, and we hope to come back sometime soon.
Awesome place to stay. Very clean, cozy and peaceful. Would recommend to anyone wanting to visit the big island. Will definitely stay there again if we go back.
This was the most darling little place to stay in the middle of a rain forest jungle! We first toured Volcano National Park with all the starkness and lava fields, and then followed the directions and ended up in a beautiful, lush forest surrounded by ferns, trees and flowers. Sally and Jeff are two amazing hosts who are very knowledgeable and helpful about the area and everything there is to do. They were a pleasure to work with planning our stay and promptly answered any and all of our questions. Serenity Suite, our lodging, was more of an efficiency apartment with a fantastic library and a hammock on the porch. What a haven after hiking and sightseeing! The weather cooperated, unfortunately, so we didn't have a chance to get toasty warm in front of the fire! The suite was spacious and would have been perfect for traveling with children. Loved it and the location was perfect for touring throughout the Hilo area.
`Beautiful secluded location in Volcano within 10 minutes of the national park. The owners greeted us when we arrived and had a breakfast for us the next morning. It is very relaxing on the porch listening to the birds signing. The yard is like a botanical garden. Highly recommended.
There was an error in the booking system which meant this rental was double booked but Sally was so helpful in rectifying the problem! She managed to find us another place and even paid the difference from her own pocket! Sally went above and beyond what was required and this made our stay so much smoother! As much as we would have loved to stay here, It wasn't to be this trip! We will be back! Thanks so much Sally for all your help and your generosity!

No Pets. During the 2016 holiday season there will be a three night minimum stay. I suggest at least a three night stay (although our minimum stay is 2 days after December 31, 2016) in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.
Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
