Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.

Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 40 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.

The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.

About Sally & Jeffey Mermel

Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.

Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 34nd year.

Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.

Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977

Why Sally & Jeffey Mermel chose Volcano

Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.

The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.

What makes this house unique

Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.

Relaxing in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly loved our stay at the Volcano Village Serenity Suite. Sally and Jeffrey welcome you like longtime friends, and are chock full of useful information and recommendations in Hilo and Volcano Village.

The suite is in the rainforest where birds will serenade you during the day and crickets follow at night. It is immaculate and well appointed with everything you need. The hammocks, especially the one on the porch, are a fabulous touch, as are the trails through the back of the property. The beds are super comfy. We were sad to leave it behind and look forward to returning.

A quiet and peaceful getaway with a great location and wonderful hosts!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Volcano Village Serenity Suite for 3 nights and had a wonderful time.

It was so quiet and surrounded by a beautiful property that feels like a mini-rainforest. Sally and Jeffrey were very friendly and hospitable - they gave us a warm welcome, had breakfast for the next day stocked in the refrigerator and gave us tips for best timings to visit the different places in Volcano Village.

One of the best things about this place is the location! You are about a 5min drive away from the Volcanoes national park entrance - this made it so convenient for us to drive up multiple times a day if needed to get the best view of the volcano.

They have a treasure trove of interesting books since Sally loves to read. But this meant that there was a slight musty smell during our first night there - this mostly cleared up when we left the doors open for a day. But in case you're allergic, you might want to come prepared.

Overall, we had a lovely time and would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Volcano Village.

Loved our stay here!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I, along with his parents, spent three nights here in May 2017. We had an absolutely lovely stay! Sally and Jeffrey were extremely helpful and accommodating, going well above and beyond what we have ever received (or expected) from a VRBO host. They were in quick communication and provided great recommendations and advice about the local things to do. The suite itself was beautiful - a quaint little oasis tucked away in the rainforest. Volcano itself isn't very big, but the suite is a short drive away from everything you need - and a short drive from the crater lookout as well (worth going up at night to check out the glow)! We would full heartedly recommend this location, and these lovely hosts, to anyone else heading through the Volcano area. Spend at least three nights, if you can!

wonderfully restorative stay , May 2017

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Volcano Village Serenity Suite. This well thought out, cozy lodging is situated to envelope you in the landscape of the rainforest. Every window frames a view of ferns, trees, mosses, and flowers. We slept w the front door open each night (there's a screen door). One magical night we drifted off to sleep to the sound of rain - there's nothing like the sound of rain in a rainforest! It was one of the best night's sleep I've had . We woke each morning serenaded by birds. Each morning we had breakfast at the table on the porch, just listening to the birds, relaxing , taking in the fresh air. I know that sounds like a cliche, but truly, there's something so special about this place and this environment - it's just restorative.

Ok, for more concrete details: comfortable bed, lovely breakfast provisions for the first day, coffee provided. Efficient small kitchen - met our needs! - small fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, well stocked w plates, pots, etc. Lots of WONDERFUL books to read , movies, some games.

Our hosts, Sally and Jeffrey , were so welcoming and friendly. They were gracious in recommendations for activities and places to eat. A must do : go to the Jaegger Museum overlook at night to see the volcano - you'll see a red glowing sky and the glow of lava in the crater - very different feeling than when seen during the day.

Thank you again Sally and Jeffrey! We hope to stay w you again on another trip to Hawaii.

Absolutely delightful. Deserves a 6star rating

We spent 3 nights here. Sally and Jeffrey were fantastic hosts. They provided a great breakfast and have equipped the suite perfectly. Gave us great advise on dinner places (Jeffrey actually made a reservation for us) and sally showed us her lovely garden. You don't need to visit a tropical garden

once you stay here.

No Pets. I highly suggest at least a three night stay in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.

Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
