Overview

About the property

Two room suite with covered porch and private entry Hammock on porch.

VOLCANO VILLAGE SERENITY SUITE

Your private entrance leads to our sweet Serenity Suite in the heart of quiet Volcano Village. Our property is on one acre of land that we have been gardening and landscaping in a native forest for 40 years. You will find quiet and privacy and as you stroll there are benches throughout the property.

Relax in either of 2 hammocks, one under the native Lehua Ohia trees and Hapu'u ferns and the other on your private covered porch.

We have recently added new gas grill and grilling tools to Serenity Suite for our guests use.

Relax and restore as you listen to soothing native bird songs (note: there are no cogui frogs in this part of the village, which are very noisy critters)

There is a cozy gas fireplace, Sally's extensive lending library and 2 beds in this 2 room suite with covered porch.

We think this vacation rental is ideal for 2 adults or a family. It is not always ideal for 4 adults as there is one queen bed and one double bed, so if you are especially tall or large the double bed might be too small for you. We want everyone to be most comfortable while staying in Volcano Village Serenity Suite!

Extra single futon available, if needed.

We have comfy 'hapi' coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!

A generous locally sourced breakfast is provided on the first morning in your suite. It will all be in the fridge when you arrive. Our water is excellent, so don't buy any bottled water.

Wonderful Freshly ground coffee, tea assortments, hot chocolate and popcorn are provided.

We are extremely close to ALL that you need: 3 minutes to the nearby stores and restaurants and 5 minutes to the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Our sweet neighborhood is also a joy to stroll in, so bring your walking shoes.

You will love this place!

Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.

Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 40 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.

The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.

About Sally & Jeffey Mermel

Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.

Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 34nd year.

Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.

Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977

Why Sally & Jeffey Mermel chose Volcano Village

Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.

The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.

What makes this house unique

Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.

Rainforest fairytale

  • 5 of 5

Sally was so sweet and the rooms were perfect for our 2 night stay but I just can't get over how beautiful the property is! All we wanted to do once we got here was sit in one of the 2 hammocks and read or listen to the birds. All the little trails were so cute! We were super close to the Volcano park and just 30 min from the black sand beach. I definitely want to come back!

An Amazing and Unforgettable VRBO Home!

  • 5 of 5

In a heartbeat, we would come back to VVSS. Beautiful location in the rainforest. Waking up, sitting on the porch/hammocks and watching the sun light or rain stream through the palm ferns was a little slice of heaven. In addition, Jeffrey & Sally were kind and generous hosts. The time they put into welcoming guests with breakfast, caring for the garden, and giving suggestions for things to do locally made vacationing here a joy. The basketball hoop was a delight to my teenager and the wonderful library, with games and videos made VVSS feel at home immediately. We were sad that Volcano National Park was closed, but Jeffrey and Sally provided many other options. Driving into Hilo was not a problem and Hilo retains a wonderful slower pace than the other more commercial big cities. (Plenty of shopping and good eats to be had in Hilo too). Once Volcano National Park opens up again, we will be back again as soon as we can. Unforgettable time in a magical place!

Three lovely days

  • 5 of 5

Three lovely days at "volcano village serenity suite". Folks despite the news depicting the dire situation in the main Hawaii island, it isn't as bad. Sure there are areas that is severely affected by the volcanic activities but this is big island and many people live on it and by and large life is going on. Sally and Jeff are genuinely hospitable folks and their place serene and surrounded by a tropical wonderland. Cool nights and quiet and devoid of light and noise pollution. I had never realized that ferns can be like trees. This is a place where you can ponder and say to yourself what is life and where are ones priorities. Highly recommended.

Vacation in the Rainforest

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed four nights at this Volcano Village VRBO. The hosts provided the first morning's breakfast (and two extra papayas later in the stay) along with valuable information on the area since Volcanoes National Park allowed access only to a few areas.

This unit provides a cozy, relaxing setting for seeing what the non-beachfront world of Hawaii is all about. Plus it allows pretty easy access to Hilo, Green Sand Beach, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach.

Cozy Suite - Friendly & Welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay in this cozy suite. Sally and Jeffrey are the most welcoming and awesome hosts. Despite it being rainy (but warm), we were able to still hike in the park and enjoy the village. The Volcano Village farmer's market is also a joy to visit!

Amazing garden/rain forest and a great home base to explore Volcano National Park!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here with our 2 boys (ages 5 & 2) from Apr 19-22nd, 2018.

Sally and Jeffrey were very welcoming and had thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable. From the amazing fresh breakfast in the fridge to the extra touches such as buying new flashlights for the boys to use, and having kids books out a ready to read, they really did put a lot of care in to trying to make our stay special. The place itself is set in an amazing rain forest garden and feels very private. It is a cottage style accommodation with a mini fridge, microwave, BBQ and sink area.

It was a great location for proximity to the Volcano Park and Jeffrey and Sally are a wealth of information about the park, the town of Volcano and restaurants etc.

the only one draw back was that there is no stove or hot plate so if you are planning on many hot meals you will have to rely on the BBQ/microwave.

I would highly recommend this place if you want a relaxing getaway in the rain forest while exploring the volcanos!

No Pets. I highly suggest at least a three night stay in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.

Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
