Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.

Sally is celebrating her 50th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 40 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.

The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.

About Sally & Jeffey Mermel

Jeffrey and Sally are recently retired business owners.

Sally owned and created "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo" in 1976, which at one time has 3 locations. The original store is located in historic downtown Hilo @ 256 Kamehameha Ave and is now owned by wonderful Tracie Yoshimoto. The store has won numerous "best" gift store awards throughout its now 38 year history. It has an online presence on Facebook and numerous other social media, because of Tracie. Tracie was 6 when Sally opened that store and was a faithful customer as a child with her mother, Hazel and as an adult with her 3 children. She purchased 'MISH' in October 2013. Sally was also the originator of 'Bear's Coffee', (sold after 9 years) Which is still located in downtown Hilo at 106 Keawe Street and recently celebrated it's 32nd year.

Jeffrey is a former peace corp volunteer and was a naturalist in Volcanoes National Park when he first moved to the Big Island. He is an active community volunteer, and really makes a difference. The world is better because of him. In 1979 Jeffrey founded "The Fireplace & Home Center" along side Sally's "The Most Irresistible Shop In Hilo". This is one reason why your stay in Volcano Serenity Suite will be warm and cozy! Jeffrey sold this store in April 2014. So, now we have keep busy by creating this wonderful vacation rental suite. Sally loves to garden, cook, do yoga and read. They are happily married for over 37 years and have two grown children who live in the islands.

Sally & Jeffey Mermel purchased this house in 1977

Why Sally & Jeffey Mermel chose Volcano

Our home has 3 levels and the Serenity Suite is privately located in the garden/ forest level with it's own path and entry. It is quiet, restorative and peaceful.

The entire property consists of one acre that meanders through the delightful native Hawaiian rainforest . This property is in a native bird corridor that supports the wonderful songs and sights of native birds. Many "apapane" will sing for you! You will be amazed at the sights and sounds.

What makes this house unique

Old growth Hawaiian native forest surrounds this suite. You have complete privacy and access. Many Volcano rentals may be in new subdivisions across Hwy 11, while this is sweetly situated in old & historic Volcano Village. There are no noisy coqui frogs in this area (a true blessing) but at most lower elevations they are now established and because of their decibel level are not welcome critters. We work hard in Volcano to keep them at bay! Our suite is cozy and warm and has an extensive library and incredible views from the windows and private deck.

Two Days in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

The Serenity Suite is conveniently located to the national park and Jeffrey and Sally were exceptional guides as to how to navigate seeing all that the park has to offer.

The breakfast provided was delicious and plentiful. We couldn't finish it all in two days.

The suite was ideal for escaping crowds, cooling off, and catching a quick rest before venturing out to see the volcano at night. The birds sang sweetly while we napped in the cool shade.

Great HomeAway find!

A perfect place for everybody young at heart dreaming of nature, peace and harmony.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for the full week. We flew from L.A. to Hilo and drove our rental car at night relying on detailed instructions from Sally and Jeffrey. When we arrived we were dead tired and dreamt of bed and nothing else. In the morning we had our chance to see the property at day light.

The property was just perfect fit for our needs, the rain forest surrounding us combined with all the noises made by birds and frogs was truly giving use sense of peace of mind. Whatever energy we spent hiking on the trails in Volcano National Pare we have regained each following morning. The sleeping arrangement was very good as we had nice view of the rain forest right in front of our bed. Sadly we didn't have much time to use the other room, we would wish to have more time to spend with all the books on shelfs waiting to be opened. We don't watch TV at home and we didn't find the need to watch it during our stay. What we needed though was reliable internet to keep in touch with our family and friends leaving in few far far away places, I must say I was impressed with the speed of upload and download of the files, the Face Time on our phone worked quite well, just like the voip app on the phone. The location of this property is very good, driving by car it is just a little less than 1 hour to Hilo, couple of minutes to National Park, 2 hours drive to Kona.

Oh, the owners are very very friendly and helpful in any way, no need to be shy, just talk to them and you will see it for yourself.

I think, me and my wife would highly recommend this property as your Hawaiian destination, the adventure is waiting and starts right here. Stop dreaming, start acting, there are not too many places left like that.

Owner's Response: Sally and I were so pleased to get such a positive review by Grzegorz and Marzena recently. They were the perfect guests, and we'd be pleased to host them again..We loved their sense of adventure during their stay here for 7 days..As Grzegorz said: "stop dreaming, start acting." They really took advantage of the many things to do in and around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. One clarification: He mentioned that "the birds and frogs was truly giving us a sense of peace of mind." We are situated in a "bird corridor" where the sounds of native birds is lovely, We have no coqui frogs in this part of the rainforest. (in other parts of this island, the sound from the coqui frogs can be overwhelming.) We pride ourselves on preserving the peace and quiet...What Grzegorz must have been referring to was the gentle sound of some crickets.

Volcano Village Serenity Suites is a real gem! Sally and Jeffrey's dedication to this beautiful retreat is exemplary and their devotion to ensuring that visitors are comfortable and enjoying their stay to the fullest is beyond words! It's the little touches that adds depth to an experience and Serenity Suites is rich in these pleasures. My family and I will unequivocally stay here again.

A hui hou and mahalo to our new Hawaiian friends Sally and Jeffrey.

Beautiful, relaxing little suite with warm and friendly hosts.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four used VVSS as our home base for exploration of Volcanoes National Park and the Hilo side of the Big Island, and we couldn't have been happier with the choice. The owners greeted us in person and gave us a walk-through of the 2-room +1 bath unit, along with some great advice on places to visit and eat at in Volcano.

The kids loved the DVD collection of classic 80's and 90's movies, the adults loved the quiet seclusion of the location. The breakfast that the hosts provided the first day was so generous we were still enjoying parts of it on our third day.

I can't recommend this highly enough!

Idyllic vacation getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with our stay at the Serenity Suite. The two-room suite is absolutely lovely (as a book lover, I appreciated the many interesting books on its multiple shelves), and we especially enjoyed our leisurely mornings drinking coffee on the porch looking out at the lush backyard and listening to the birds sing. Sally left us a delicious breakfast for the first morning. She and Jeff couldn't have been nicer, were very helpful with tips about how best to sightsee and eat in the area, and - as has been noted by other reviews - also respectful of privacy. It was a blissfully quiet four-night stay, and we hope to come back sometime soon.

No Pets. I highly suggest at least a three night stay in this area as there is so much to see and do in The Volcanoes National Park. In a two day stay you just have one full day to visit the park and why be rushed?
Price is for single or double occupancy. For each additional guest there is a $15 fee.

Wonderful suite for a couple, family or a single person. We do NOT rent to two couples as the suite is ideal for a couple, or family or a single person.
This would work as a unit for a family with up to 2 children. We love children and are very family friendly.
