Bay Cove Cottage B, On The Bay Near Charleston

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

Clean and cozy, 550 sq. ft cottage with kitchenette, laundry, view from patio.

Bay Cove Cottage B is one side of a rustic 1940s cottage duplex. It is a clean and cozy, the interior is a pastel-colored 550 sq ft apartment with one bedroom and a fold-out couch in the living room. The kitchen and bathroom with shower are simple, and retain original vintage character. There is no stove or oven, but a microwave, skillet, and portable single burner rangette, for the most basic cooking, and a small refrigerator are provided in the kitchen. The vintage bathroom is small, with no tub and the shower has a small entry (16 inches wide). We are offering the cottages as the basic option of Bay Cove properties and offer few amenities. Cable TV is provided, Wifi is available throughout, there is a full-sized refrigerator with ice maker and a coin-operated laundry service in a separate room in the duplex. The owner's residence is nearby, on the same lot as the cottages, and may also be rented. There is partial bay view from the apartment, and a small patio with fire pit is available for a spectacular view of the bay and Charleston harbor. A laundry room with tall table and chairs offers great bay views while enjoying coffee or a glass of wine, when the weather is not suitable for patio use. We can direct you to easy bayshore access that requires a 500 foot walk along Cape Arago Hwy., or other easy bay access for clamming or crabbing within short driving distances of less than one mile.

About John and Candy Chatt

We are a retired couple, John a federal wildlife biologist, Candy a swim coach and airline employee, and both former Nebraska farmers.

We consider ourselves adventurous, spontaneous, budget travelers and love meeting new people to share travel experiences.

John and Candy Chatt purchased this cottage in 2014

Why John and Candy Chatt chose Coastal Oregon

We have lived in the immediate area since moving to Coos Bay from Corvallis in 1999. We recently moved into a home that we thought would be a perfect place to share with others in beautiful Charleston, on the southern coast of Oregon. We also enjoy all outdoor activities, birdwatching, hiking, kayaking and just observing the wonders of nature.

What makes this cottage unique

We felt fortunate to happen across this wonderful part of our country, the best overall climate we have ever encountered, fresh air, and plenty of room to wander to our heart's content, without the hustle and bustle found in so many other places. We love the diversity of habitats in the area and the associated diversity of bird species that are regularly seen. The views and solitude of walking on a private beach provide a never ending source of enjoyment and relaxation. We felt even more fortunate to have the opportunity to acquire additional similar property within 500 feet of our home. We always considered this property as having great potential as a vacation rental, and now we are trying to make that dream come true.

Stayed with John and Candy as a stop over in our travels! Really enjoyed it, John and Candy were very welcoming, the space was clean and comfortable and was great to rest and relax. We also checked out some of the local hikes, really beautiful.

Great Place to Stay in Coos Bay

  • 5 of 5

We not only enjoyed the place, we enjoyed the hospitality. The place was reasonably priced, very clean and there was lots of information on what to do in the area and where to eat (always helpful). We had several conversations with the Chatts and they led us to a nearby place, Simpson Reef, to see the sea lions and seals that did not cost a cent. The second day we went to Simpson Reef, we even saw a cow and calf whales; Charley was able to capture them on camera! If/When we are in the area again, we will definitely stop by and will most assuredly be recommending this place to others.

A cozy cottage that has everything.

  • 5 of 5

Bay Cove Cottage was everything we had hoped for when we made our reservation. It was located on the bay with lovely views and accessible beach. It was close to Shore Acres State Park for wonderful hikes and strolls through the gardens. It was close to Sunset Bay Park where our good friends were camping. The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped for a relaxing stay. It even had yoga mats and extra outdoor jackets in case guests needed them. The hosts are friendly and accommodating and the price was reasonable.

Strikingly clean and quaint

  • 4 of 5

John and Candy were wonderful, met us at the property to show us around and even had a coin-operated washer-dryer for us to use. We were half way through our trip so that was really appreciated. The house itself is tiny and sweet with a comfortable bed. Coos Bay itself is a little lacking in amenities and I had thought that the house would have a true bay view (it does but only outside by the camp fire or in the laundry room). It was too cold to hang out outside so we kind of lost out on the view. Otherwise, a great place to spend the night.

great value on the oregon coast

  • 5 of 5

spent two weeks at this property and enjoyed it thoroughly. john and candi are exceptional guests the space is comfortable for one or two persons. kitchen and minifridge packed with every condiment available, and, if needed, a full size fridge and freezer next door in laundry room. no stove oven in kitchen, but there's a hot plate, griddle and charcoal grilles outside available. spacious front room and bedroom. netflix was an unexpected plus.

nice view of charleston harbor, and the great restaurants there are 5 minutes away. the beaches, lighthouse, cape arago are no more than six miles from here.

my only negative was the bathroom, which is tiny. i'm 6' 2", 300 lbs. the top of the tiny sink hits me mid-thigh, and it was a squeeze to get into the shower. however, everything is functional.

this place is comfortable and simply a great value overall.

We love the breathtaking views in the area, including from our backyard and deck. Charleston is an authentic fishing village and the entire area remains an unspoiled gem on the Oregon Coast. The area is a birdwatching paradise for shorebirds and seabirds, as well as other species in the diverse habitat in the area. Harbor seals and sea lions are abundant and easily seen throughout the area. Whale watching is popular from several scenic points along Cape Arago Hwy, and the Shore Acres Formal Flower Gardens and holiday light display, scenic coastal hiking trails, and tidepools, are popular attractions, along with spectacular wave watching during winter storms. Our location is on on the bay near the beginning of the South Slough National Estuarine Reserve, and we can assist you with advice, maps, and tide info for a great kayak adventure into the Slough. Enjoy a relaxing golf game at nearby Sunset Bay Golf course (7 minutes away) or travel 19 miles to the world famous Bandon Dunes courses. Crabbing and clamming is available from the docks and the mudflats, and we would be glad to to provide a crab trap or a bucket and shovel for clamming along with a few pointers, and maybe even a demonstration to get you started.
