About Bob Jones

Bob Jones and Doris Groves love the lifestyle of living on a small, plant based farm, with their animals (cat and dog) and trying to be more self reliant -heating with their own firewood, using their own water and growing as much of their own food as possible.

Bob Jones purchased this apartment in 1986

Why Bob Jones chose Downeast and Acadia

Doris has lived on the farm for 30 years and raised her children there. The core of the original farmhouse dates back to 1850 and was a rough hewn cabin hauled from a nearby pond.

Bob Joined her in 2012 and together they have renovated buildings, built new structures and expanded the vegetable gardens and small orchard.

Brooksville is a very special place. There are beautiful woods, rolling hills, farms and a nice mix of long term residents and summer folks.

What makes this apartment unique

Picture yourself relaxing and reading in a hammock in the afternoon sun by the pond serenaded by frogs and songbirds. Or kayaking on the nearby Bagaduce River where you will see loons, cormorants, eagles, ospreys and fur seals.(We may be able to supply two kayaks) Or walking on our back woods trails where you can look for chanterell mushrooms and listen for great horned owls, hermit thrushes and pilliated woodpeckers. Or taking a leisurely bike ride along the country roads. (We can provide bikes)

Or enjoy a visit to Forest Farm (20 minute drive), last homestead of Helen and Scott Nearing, key individuals in the back to the land movement in the 1960's. Take a tour there and enjoy Monday night speakers in July and August.

Loved our stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the charming garden cottage. Our hosts Bob and Doris were so lovely, welcoming and knowledgeable about the area. The cottage was immaculate, with a comfortable bed and everything we needed. The gardens were beautiful, contributing to the overall serene ambiance. We especially enjoyed our visit to the nearby Good Life Center and the scenic drive around Cape Rosier. We also appreciated the convenient proximity to the scenic Bagaduce Lunch, with it's picnic tables overlooking the tidal estuary, Reversing Falls on the Bagaduce River. We're looking forward to our next visit to Sweet Dog Farm.

Comfortable and welcoming stay in garden cottage

  • 5 of 5

Sweet Dog Farm is a friendly spot in beautiful surroundings. We spent the night on a driving tour in the fall, and this was one of the highlights of our exploration of Maine. Accomodations were in a new cottage, seperated from the owner's home by flower and vegetable gardens. The room was comfortable and charming. The proprietors were generous with local information and directions to the nearby Good Life Center, as well as with e-mail advice in planning our trip. A sweet place to stay.

Genuine welcome, lovely ambience!

  • 5 of 5

Bob and Doris were wonderfully welcoming hosts, when we arrived after dark and just a little overwhelmed by the scenery we'd been seeing and weariness of a long day's journey. Our visiting time with them left us feeling they were friends who we just hadn't happen to meet before this. Our accommodation was simply beautiful, and the surrounding peaceful quiet was soothing after the hassles of travel and the business of Boston the few days before. The next day, Sweet Dog Farm made a perfect jumping off place for exploring the nearby area.

Great accomodations and wonderful atmosphere

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for a week over the summer with my girlfriend and couldn't have been more pleased. Not only were the accommodations perfect for us, the property was beautiful. From the overflowing vegetable gardens and raspberry bushes to the quaint pond tucked back into the woods. Everything seemed green and growing and we were welcomed to explore at will. The room we staid in was new, clean, and bright with a convenient little kitchen and full bathroom on the bottom floor. It was only a 10 minute bike ride to the water on back roads and just a 15 minute drive to the small town of Blue Hill with shops and restaurants. Just a little further to sandy and sunny Curtis Cove. Acadia National Park is a 45 minute drive and well worth a full day of exploring. Would definitely stay again!
