Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

The Moorings at Mandalay, Aucilla River Florida is ultimate and unique eco-tourist destination – a true nature lover’s paradise inside the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge -- birding, boating, sailing, canoeing, hiking, hunting, scalloping, fishing, artifact hunting, wildflower collecting, wildlife observation, nature photography, and painting. You can enjoy the pristine beauty of the Aucilla River. You’ll love the panoramic view of the refuge across the river through the 40 feet of sliding glass doors or from the dock.

This retreat is beautifully furnished with objects collected from around the world. The 2-bedroom, 1 ½ bath home has a queen-size bed, a comfortable double size futon, and a double Tempur-Pedic bed and plenty of floor space for inflatable mattresses. The home is fully furnished including linens, dishes, a dishwasher, a microwave, a washer, a dryer, a flat-screen TV, a VCR/DVD player, CD's, DVDs, games, books and more.

The rambling yard that has 160 front feet right along the riverbank. From the dock, you are just upstream about 10 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico with a public boat ramp nearby. The area has abundant wildlife. Seasonal sightings include ruby-throated hummingbirds, ospreys, bald eagles, pleated woodpeckers, swallow-tailed kites, great blue herons, white pelicans, turkeys, and flocks of iron head storks. In the river, teeming with fish, we've also seen manatees, otters, and porpoises. All around in the forest raccoon, deer, fox, coyotes, bobcats, and wild boar abound.

It’s a short hop up to Tallahassee, just 45 minutes; to Perry it’s 20 minutes. About 30 minutes away is the village of St. Marks, on the St. Marks River where it converges with the crystal clear Wakulla River. At the headwaters of the Wakulla River, twenty minutes away, is the Wakulla Springs Lodge State Park, a “river boat adventure” tour, swimming, dining, and lodging. For your convenience, JR’s Aucilla River Store is within 5 miles at the US 98 bridge. A guide service is available that provides licensed charter captains intimately familiar with the Big Bend waters.

This area has a rich archaeological history. You will walk the same trails of our ancestors from the Pleistocene era. For hiking, about three miles from the house, a segment of the Florida Trail runs east and west through the forest of the National Wildlife Refuge. It parallels US 98, then turns north up the Aucilla River basin through the many sinkholes to the upper run. That segment has white water rapid canoeing.

You can enjoy a half-day pristine canoe or fishing trip from the headwaters of the Wacissa River merging with the Aucilla River’s lower run ending at the house. Nearby recreational areas include Hickory Mound Impoundment, especially good for birding, Goose Pasture Recreational Area for canoeing and picnicking, and the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge for scenic beauty and abundant wildlife.

My husband and I love this property so much we have been there 4-5 times. You can't go wrong if you love a quiet retreat. If the weather doesn't cooperate, you can still enjoy the river and its wildlife (abundant) from inside. This past trip we even saw 2 dolphins when the tide was coming in. The entire side of the house that faces the river is full-length glass so the view is spectacular from all locations. The house itself is comfortable, spacious, and there are detailed instructions on how to locate and operate everything you need. Hiking trails are close, as is the Wakulla River.

Beautiful setting, comfortable accommodation

  • 5 of 5

It's hard for pictures to do justice here. The setting is absolutely marvellous -fairly private, with a huge beautiful tree out front, in which we spotted several kinds of birds, and the wonderful deck and river scene in the back-with its viewings of osprey, alligators, turtles, cormorants and herons. The house is amply furnished and comfortable. Our only negative was the midges or "no-see-ums" that forced us indoors in the evenings when we'd rather have been on the deck. But apparently that can vary. We still enjoyed sitting out in the day. Also appreciated our proximity to St Mark's Wildlife Refuge, a wonderful place to visit.

Had a wonderful trip.

  • 4 of 5

Very beautiful riverfront views and plenty of wildlife sightings to enjoy. Very cozy home with everything you needed on hand. Wished we could of stayed longer. Had a few minor issues, outside grill & fire burning kettle, was not cleaned and ready for use, (even though there is a $75.00 cleaning fee charged) and had a repair technician during our stay that we felt could of been scheduled at a different time frame when we were not on our vacation stay. Overall, we would like to return for a longer stay and enjoy more of the areas surrounding the property. Had a lot of enjoyable evenings sitting out on the dock and star gazing. Very breathtaking!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments!! I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. I apologize that the grill wasn't clean. We will add that to our cleaner's list. We had wrongly assumed that guest would clean after themselves. And also, so sorry for the repair person. It is very hard to get them down to a rural area we generally have to take them when they will come. And our rental calendar is so full. We will try to do better next time. Aloha!

Great vacation site!

  • 4 of 5

Rented this home for a weekend family get together. The home was very clean and well equipped. I brought two kayaks and we used the owners canoe to explore the river. We hung out on the dock fishing and watching the wildlife. While there we watched a couple of dolphins swim up and down the river and spotted a pod of manatees. My wife and I watched a bear walking down Mandalay Road. Very nice stay.

Lovely property with AMAZING location on river!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved, loved this little house... nestled in the wood with sweet little wooden swings up front, we were in aww right away!

I will say it is important to manage the AC at the house... I think our little ones left it open and we were in & out a lot, so the temp shot up, but it recovered in the night.

This is a great rental!
