Helby's - a house that sleeps 5 guests in 3 bedrooms

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 0 - 7 nights

About the property

With elements of Georgian simplicity and modern convenience this fascinating house is located on the corner of two residential streets between Portsmouth and Southsea and dates back to 1804. Helby's has three snug bedrooms upstairs, each with crisp white linen on the beds, and a newly fitted out bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower.

Given its age the layout of the house is most definitely of its time and more than a little unique, with spiral steps to a basement TV room complete with wooden floors and original wooden staircase to the first floor. There's also a small enclosed, private garden terrace for summer drinks and BBQ's.

Opposite the house is a local pub serving food and ales, plus all of Portsmouth's cultural and tourist attractions within easy walking distance. Helby's is the perfect self-catering accommodation for families and friends or professionals needing a perfectly central location to Portsmouth with Georgian seaside charm.

I Picked A Great Place!

  • 5 of 5

Helby's is a great old building that has been nicely rehabilitated as a residence. It's not rich/luxurious, but I'd call it "upper middle-class". It has 3 levels, the ground floor with living, dining, and kitchen, plus a half-bath, and a nice little "astroturf-covered" garden between the garage and the main house, a basement with large flat screen TV and a large couch which can serve as a single bed for one person, and the upstairs, with 3 bedrooms and full bath.

There's a great washer & dryer in the garage which guests are welcome to use. They furnish washing soap and dryer anti-static sheets. We easily got our two cars, one large, one compact, into the garage, though it's OK to park a car outside on the street in front of the garage if needed. It's a no-parking zone, except for the occupant of Helby's.

The only negative about the house is that transport between the 3 house levels is via a very tight spiral staircase. If you hold on to the rail for your life you can safely move floor to floor, but it's really not a house I'd call safe for people over 80. Lucklily we were younger than that!

Our group of 5 found the beds great. There's a little street noise at night, but hey, you'd in the city center. Of course there's some street noice. We slept very well.

The arrival instructions speak of a pod coffee machine, but we never found that. We found a French press, plus an electric kettle to heat water, so we walked to a nearby grocery, bought some coffee, and did fine, though we eventually discovered that some coffee had been furnished for us.

The atmosphere at the pub across the street was great, the beer cold, and the menu and food good. The pub was where we met Jeff Scott, who represents the Belgian owner of the house. Jeff was very nice. He seems to be a regular at the pub, and he directed us to a great breakfast cafe nearby, as well as a wonderful Indian restaurant 3 blocks away.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback! It is great to hear that you had such a great stay at Helby's. Thank you for feedback about the staircase. We do note on our website that there is a spiral staircase which we ask guests especially if elderly or children to take extra care where using. It is great to hear that you were able to enjoy the amenities around the property like the local pubs and restaurants! We do hope to see you again in the near future.
