Our guest house has 4 bed rooms. The master bed room has a California king bed the others have queen size beds. There are air beds for the smaller people with a fight to see who gets to sleep in the coveted Crows Nest. We can easily sleep 20. The kitchen in stocked with the usual pots, pans, dishes and the apliances linens provided. Outside patio has wood and a fire pit. Deck just out the patio doors in the kitchen has a grill with charcoal in the garage. This home was built by our son in 2002. it is one of 3 homes on our 200 acre farm. It sets at the very end of Martin Ridge in the center of the farm. The closest house is to the rear of the guest house 1/8 mile away. The only thing beyond this dead end road is the remaining part of the farm, a herd of beef cattle, a 6 mile river view, miles and miles of hills and hollows, starry nights ,moon and sun rises and sets, and lots of natures wild southern Indiana critters. The name of our farm is Peaceful Hills, come stay with us and you will come to appreciate the meaning....
We were born and raised right here in Perry county. I was raised on a dairy farm and my husband, Phil was raised on a hog farm. We purchased this farm in 1972 and have lived here ever since. We raised 4 children here. My Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Mason Carter came to Perry County in 1813 from Kentucky. Phil's Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Jules Etienne came here from Florenville, Belguim in 1850. Perry County has been our family home for generations. We have made our livings on the land as farmers and woodsmen. We have a deep love for this area and an equally deep dedication to the natural resources that sustain rural life and provide such a unique atmosphere.
Joann Etienne (HN) purchased this house in 2014
Our son Robin built this home in 2002 with the intention of raising his family on his boyhood farm. Opportunity called them elsewhere and we bought his home. We have visitors here often to paint or just admire the view. It seemed like a no brainer to freshen the house up a little and use it as a guesthouse. Located in Perry county we have the same hilly landscape as Brown County but not the crowds.
Besides the unbelievable view if you have never experienced the utter joy of living high above the rest of the world on the very end of a ridge, with the only light at night from the sky and the only sounds coming from nature and you are in for a treat. If you are familiar with scenic Brown County you will fall in love with Perry County. The same beautiful landscape less the crowds plus the Ohio River.
We had a buddy reunion, and it was an awesome location to have it. The property is beautiful with awesome hilltop views of the Hoosier National Forest. I thought I was in the mountains, and the Ohio river overlook was really cool. The house was clean, and had everything we needed for the weekend. Joann and her husband were great. They checked in to see if we needed anything and to make sure we were having fun. Truly the perfect place to go if you need peace and quiet for a relaxing getaway. Don't think twice, it's as great as it looks on the website.
We couldn't have asked for a better Holiday weekend! Most hospitable hosts and all the comforts of home only better! Great property and so relaxing! We look forward to making this an annual trip to re charge our batteries! All your hard work shows and we have great respect for what you do! Take care until we meet again!
My family and I had the most relaxing long weekend on the farm. Joann and her family were wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed. The views are breathtaking of the nearby river and surrounding valley. We enjoyed daily dips in the nearby pool and watching the wildlife. There are plenty of things to see and do in the area. We visited Marengo cave about 30 minutes away. The house is very clean and has plenty of room for a large group. At night, you would not believe how many stars you can see. We saw 7 falling stars in under an hour. The views are so amazing to wake up to, you have to see it to understand. We enjoyed our stay so much I'm sure we will visit again. Thank you Joann and family for a wonderful mini vacation!!
We had a family reunion of sorts, so the plenty of beds and linens supplied were very helpful. The pictures were only a hint of what the land on the farm was like, absolutely breathtaking. We spent both nights outside looking out over the trees and enjoying the stars. Very true to their word, were able to use the pool in the late hours without disturbing their sleep. Would definitely recommend to any group looking for a beautiful country getaway.
When all 21 of us, to a person, gave high marks for beauty of location, convenience, cleanliness, adaptability and amenities in the home, I knew we had made an excellent choice. The kitchen eating area layout was perfect. Amazingly for a group this size, the two bathrooms, with plenty of privacy doors and towels, worked very well. The three bedrooms plus a loft with two air mattresses plus three other air mattresses that could be placed at random plus more than enough bedding gave everyone plenty of room. Nice sitting area upstairs and down. The AC, wireless internet, TV and lots of books and magazines satisfied all. Our kids literally disappeared outside on trails or fishing off the covered dock by the pond. They would have gone swimming in the nice pool but had just spent a long day at a nearby water park. There is a wonderfully landscaped and well maintained flower garden at the entrance. You have a 180 degree view looking down on the Ohio River with an occasional barge thrown in for interest. The owner stopped in to graciously say hello. What was not to like! This place is an expansive oasis in the middle of a forest. And it provided our family one of the most pleasant of weekend memories together.
The house is beautiful, sitting on a hill over-looking the Ohio river. The house was very clean and neat, spacious to fit all of us very comfortably. It was nice to cook and have all our meals right there, which they provide everything for cooking except the groceries. We had fires outside at dark, the kids swam in the pool and they even fished. All of my children and grandchildren are ready to go back. The owner was very gracious and was there on the first day to make sure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this property!
Wild life abounds on this end of the farm. A pair of eagles nest 1/4 mile away. Sightings are fairly common until February at nesting time and on thru the summer when several daily sightings can be expected. Deer are in the fields morning and evening. Coyotes are seen often in the fields below the house hunting mice. Bird watching in pretty interesting as the hawks also hunt the fields. Since we are at the very end of Martin Ridge it feels like you are almost in the sky at night. With no interference from artificial lighting star gazing is pretty unbelievable. As you stare at the vastness of the night sky it is pretty well a guarantee that you will be serenated with the night sounds if owls and coyotes. Don't forget your binoculars and zoom lenses. If you are somewhat of a nature lover you will surly fall in love with Martin Ridge.
